You've Got (White) Male
Author: BobR    Date: 06/03/2009 12:43:14

Pity the poor White Male. He has been in power for most of recorded history. For the majority of that time, that position was a birth right, guaranteed to him if he wanted it. People of color and women were essentially property to do with as he wished. That's slowly been changing for the last 150 years or so, and they've been fighting it all the way. Disclaimer: Yes, I - the author - am a white male, but I do not subscribe to the notion that that accident of birth somehow makes me superior to others.

We are lucky to live in an age where racism and sexism are not normally overt. We do not see "black water fountains" or "white only" signs and are shocked when we see them at antique stores. Nightclubs no longer bar "unescorted ladies". Instead, the bigotry and sexism is generally more subtle, and not always apparent. Sometimes, though, it's right out there, usually accompanied by (or followed by - when they're called on it) denials that it was not meant that way.

It should be apparent, however, that the White Male is angry... Angry that they're losing power, angry that they are not automatically assumed to be the one in charge, angry that they can't turn the clock back or put the genie back in the bottle. Pandora opened her box (with the help of some enlightened white and black friends) and there is no closing it now. The White Male's days of the free ride are over and they are not going down without a fight. Over the last few years, that fight has gotten decidedly nasty.

Consider the Clinton and Obama campaigns. The sexist comments were all lined up and ready to go prior to the campaign, and then Obama had the audacity to pull ahead. Did that uppity nigger actually think he should be President?? How dare he! So out came the bile, and it was not a pleasant experience. Remember the ads, the fake money, the "Obama waffles", the "Barack the Magic Negro" song? How about the teacher who explained to the kids what "change" stood for? And - in case it wasn't apparent enough - he was actually called "uppity". Thanks White Male for confirming what we already knew about you.

Despite not being the threat that Obama was, Hillary got her share too. When asked "How do we beat the bitch?", McCain (a White Male in power) replies that it's an "excellent question". Really?

The Sotomayor nomination has brought out a double whammy of sexism and racism. When she stated that her upbringing gave her an insight that the average White Male may not have, they were outraged. How dare she claim that she knows more about being raised as a poor Hispanic woman than they do! They know everything! Naturally, this means she's got it out for the White Male, because after all - who kept her down when she was young? So in yet another example of "projection", they are calling HER a racist. Additionaly, they refer to her as being the beneficiary of affirmative action, despite how she's excelled her entire life. How many of the White Males leveling that accusation graduated from Princeton at the top of their class?

Her gender is apparently a problem as well, considering she is not Male. The nimrods that speak for White Males everywhere (like Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, Savage) and those formerly in power (like Tancredo and Gingrich) seem to be most offended. They apparently are concerned that after decades of a distinguished career, she'll let PMS take over as soon as she gets on the bench. It's bad enough they think it, worse that they feel comfortable enough to actually say it on the national stage, and really - it's not very original.

The abortion debate is where it really gets ugly, and unfortunately occasionally deadly, as the recent shooting of Dr. Tiller shows. Sure there are extremists that use religion as their club, trying to beat all those around them into submission with guilt. Most anti-choice activists aren't willing to step over that line and actually kill someone - but they don't seem too upset when it happens either. A woman's womb seems to be the last bastion of control that the White Male doesn't want to lose (or - more accurately - wants to regain control of). It seems the White Male has figured out that they need women if they want a baby. A woman doesn't need a man, really - she can head to the nearest sperm bank if she wants. But if a man wants to have a baby, he needs to find a woman willing to do it. In the Good Olde Days of the White Male, the "willing" part wasn't required.

Like a tyrant seeing his power usurped in a coup, the White Male is bunkered down. He's not going to give up without a fight, and if the fight gets nasty, then so be it. Maybe he just needs to waterboard another brown person. Not sure what that will accomplish, but it WILL make him feel powerful again...

WOW! BobR!! Great blog today!

But, I see you stumbled onto our ultimate plan (UT). Where we collect sperm from the best and brightest then we get rid of all the men (except for a few we keep around to mow the lawns and unclog the toilets and such). You haven't noticed anything missing?

Oops, have I said too much?

I'm curious does the Pureto Rico Rep have voting rights? I didn't think so but nowadays I'm not 100% positive

Comment by Random on 06/03/2009 13:46:57
I think Puerto Rico reps have no vote.

That being said, Peurto Rico doesn't pay taxes either. They'll get money allocated to them, military protection and all that fun stuff, but don't really have to pay for it.

That being said, Peurto Rico is a lovely place, my best friend lives there.

The only thing I do dislike about this blog entry, is the broad brush white guys are painted with...

I've visited - I've only seen the tourist areas and those I can speak to as being very lovely :)

thanks for the info - I didn't think they did. Poor DC they have to pay taxes AND they have NO representation

Thoughtful, powerful blog BobR.

Though I am not in the white male category instead I am member of many many minority categories I still remember my own shameful reaction when I lost my own little corner of power. It all started when we received a complementary year of full access cable TV- 500 channels of choices- Oh how I loved the power of the clicker - how i disingenously complained there was "nothing"on TV.

Well a year went by pretty quickly then the dreaded morning came when I clicked to a Showtime movie and the awful words came on the screen-"you do not have access to this channel". I am ashamed to say first I cried for a day and then I was angry at myself for caring that I lost all access and was back down to the plebeian level of "basic cable" . Now I can't even look at the other channels enjoyed by the elite few- I have to be a viewer among viewers grateful for the few dramas that make it past the reality shows.

It is hard to give up power once you have had a taste.

To Digg: go DIGG yourself a hole you asshats!

Random got his book, on CD (he reads it)

It's been quite good so far. I really do like a lot of the inside emotions behind the curtain more than the actual events.

Like Obama not hating Hillary at the end of the campaign, or his cokyness after Iowa, or all sorts of stuff.

Mornin' all! Great bloggie Bobber! I'd like you to join my support group for self-degrading caucasian males.. we currently meet twice a week to melt down our inherited cogs of power and die cast them into leashes which we can then present willingly and submissively to our contemporary female overlords

Random : to answer your question from yesterday FFXIII is also coming out in 2010, most likely before XIV.. but I do know that XIV has been in development for at least four years (the new joke going around is that FFXI was the 7-year live beta with its problems, old-style graphics and lackluster PvP content).

Random read more than that, and failed Math doing so, and all he got was suspended, and a crummy X-Box that broke a few weeks later.

*sigh* well, since I doubt I will get the PS3 and I'm not crazy about online games like that - I guess that ends my FF following

Comment by livingonli on 06/03/2009 15:25:04
I am glad I don't play video games especially since I can't afford them right now. I'll stick to the apps that I play on facebook and leave it to that.

I'd get a PS3 if it didn't cost a ridiculous amount AND I had a proper quality HDTV to take advantage of its capabilities.

I don't like those Online games

Don't like XI, and disappointed XIV will be online as well.

they made better games, and really XII was lack luster.

Random is disappointed.

Good morning, bloggers!

Excellent post, BobR! I started a thread on it over at UNN -- so hopefully we will have a few people swing by to read the blog.

In some good news, I have an interview this afternoon for a full-time English teacher position. I am pretty confident, after getting some advice on interviewing skills and a mock interview from a career counselor recently.
