A (D) No and (R) No are still 'No'.
Author: Raine    Date: 06/29/2009 12:32:22

This week, the House managed to pass what some would say is a landmark energy bill. Others have said it is just arranging the chairs on the deck. I happen to believe that this is a good bill and will create what has come to be known as green jobs. It's not perfect but I fully agree with Al Gore:
“This bill isn’t the last word, but it needs to be the first word,” Gore said firmly. “It’s important to send a signal around the world that the U.S. is serious about climate change. Now is the time -- before world leaders gather in Copenhagen this December to begin to solve the climate crisis.”
Now the bill will move one to Senate. An uphill battle to pass it will be waged for sure.

Interestingly enough, Dennis Kucinich voted no for this bill.
“I oppose H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009,” Kucinich stated in a press release. “The reason is simple. It won’t address the problem. In fact, it might make the problem worse.”

“It sets targets that are too weak, especially in the short term, and sets about meeting those targets through Enron-style accounting methods,” he continued. “It gives new life to one of the primary sources of the problem that should be on its way out — coal — by giving it record subsidies.”
Many have hailed him as being one of the straight shooters in Congress, and usually I agree with that sentiment, but this time, no. Politicians usually oppose a bill before the vote instead of after it, as Kucinich did. Instead he waited to oppose it only after he knew it had passed instead of working to defeat it. I find it disingenuous. In the end, people will not remember his vote as a protest vote, but just as a simple NO, next to a (D). A no vote from Dennis doesn't do anything different than a No vote from a blue Dog Dem or a Republican in the end.

At a certain point, ideology begins to hurt, and I believe this is starting to be the case here. One can make the case that climate change will not compromise, and I agree. That said, if we were to hold out for Mr. Kucinich's standards, we would have gotten nothing, and that is quite unacceptable. The cold hard reality is that politics is the art of compromise. In this case, Dennis Kucinich has shown himself to be as obstructionist as the Republicans -- only for all the right reasons. I know that 40 other Congresspeople voted against this bill, but it was Dennis's reasons that bothered me. I was loath to write about this today, because I know he is beloved among many of my progressive friends and often hailed as the one true liberal in the house. I am not arguing that he should abandon his principles here. What we need is less grandstanding after the vote and more working on getting it right before.

We need solutions now and we must start somewhere. Saying no after the fact doesn't do anything to help what needs fixing now. This bill is a start. It is a good start.

Besides -- The Boehner hated the bill -- how bad could it REALLY be?

:peace: and
Raine

best that I can tell, this is another one of the plans (of the 400 milion out there) that is being floated around. I am gonna see if I can get more information.

I suppose this one didn't Help either Mala: Axelrod Won't Rule Out Tax Increase

I tire of crap like this. I really do. I still believe that Obama does NOT want to tax anything... but I also belive that this is one way to get the asshats talking in DC.

We are not going to get any bill before October... we (as in ALL of us in America who want Healthcare) have a lot of work to do!

Also Just a reminder-- Congress is in Recess until July 6... so that means your reps are in their local districts -- they are more likely to listen to you now that they are not in their happy little DC bubble...

sheeesshh - on one hand I totally understand the idea of laying out all options and weeding things out till you get the right one - but on the other, as a single person who's only tax breaks (as small as they are) are because I bought a home, I'm so tired of paying the taxes that those who make 5x more then I do get to avoid. Why am I paying my share and their share?

Morning, comrades!

Listening to "Ring of Fire" this am (computer fixed; got all my podcasts back, too!) And of course, I'm still all full of jingoism, "sound of freedom" and jet fumes from yesterday, so it was a good weekend in that regard. (for the av-dork parts of me, anyway.)

We're going back to "Taxachusetts" today. Gov. Patrick is set to sign the state budget, also known as the "New Hampshire Stimulus Package", which features a 1 1/4 % hike in the sales tax, up to 6 1/4%.

Wonder why we can't pull off a GST like Canada does, or some other alternate that won't kill businesses on the NH border?

But, the Western Suburbs (re: big money) are happy, as there won't be a toll hike on the Mass Turnpike.

Morning all & Happy Mondee!

Had a bit of a mishap this weekend.. As you might know I have a sort of issue (okay it's a major issue) with premature grey hair. Well I decide to take care of that and dye it...

...picked out the color "blue-black" thinking it would be more black than blue. Oh boy. I look like I spilled a bottle of ink on my head! It looks good tho!

Welp, back in the office today. End of Month, end of quarter, end of fiscal year!

Ahh, Scoopster. I travelled through your fair state yesterday.

Pawtucket Bridge.

What's up with that?

There were signs for miles on both directions on I-95. "Don't drive over this bridge!" "No Heavy Trucks!" "$120 million dollar fine!" "Truckdrivers will be shot on sight!!"

So I get to Pawtucket, and I was expecting something a little more prominent? I don't think we even drove over a bridge there.

Yeah RIDOT has been going through this phase ever since the bridge collapse in Minnesota.. they've closed that bridge, the Sakonnet River Bridge (from Tiverton to Aquidneck Island) and a few other small bridges around the state to vehicles over 18 tons because they're afraid the bridges will collapse. They also just found major cracks in the concrete deck on 95 right behind the mall in Providence and will need to replace that as well.

Of course, they can't do anything with those right now because they're working on the new 195 interchange, redoing 95 thru Providence, changing a bunch of the exits and tearing down the old 95 bridges. Hey, no complaints here I get half-rate transit passes for the headaches!

I agree with you on this Raine. I wonder what Dennis' motives were (or, was he fighting hard but not getting any airtime -especially given the whole MJ death). Perhaps Dennis has an election coming up and he knows that not every voter pays attention to the details. If true, I find that sad.

I figured this would be a borderline decision since I thought both sides had valid points. Will have to read the decision pdf to see where the court specifically stood.

Well, back to trying to beat the heat. We are looking at 109 today. (It is a dry heat. Yes, there is a difference between this and hot Chicago weather. If you subtract about 10 degrees, you get the Chicago equivalent with the humidity.)
