Post Racialist? More like Neo Racialist.
Author: Raine    Date: 07/13/2009 12:04:54

Since when did a peace sign on a little girl cause so much angst in this world? Over the weekend the website FreeRepublic got a lot of attention for allowing a thread to run about Malia Obama and her peace tee shirt. The Vancouver Sun wrote an article about it.
“A typical street whore.” “A bunch of ghetto thugs.” “Ghetto street trash.” “Wonder when she will get her first abortion.”

These are a small selection of some of the racially-charged comments posted to the conservative ‘Free Republic’ blog Thursday, aimed at U.S. President Barack Obama’s 11-year-old daughter Malia after she was photographed wearing a t-shirt with a peace sign on the front.
David Schuster said that he will be covering the story today, on his afternoon show - to which FR responded with (Warning: the link is offensive) homophobia. That is right, they blamed the messenger when charged with racism by responding with homophobia. I will be the first to admit that FR is not exactly what some would call a bastion of typical conservatism. I refuse to buy the idea that we are in a post-racial world when we have neo-racists out there spewing this kind of hatred towards an 11 year old black child. Where is that fierce child advocate, Sarah Palin now? One would think she would speak out on behalf of Malia, right? Somehow, I don't think that will happen. Next, we will be told that it is just a message board. Well, it isn't.

It is a HUGE community of people. It represents them, it gives them voice and allows them to organize around whatever causes they feel passionate about, for example: Teabagging parties. One of our own blog family has firsthand knowledge of how they can operate. I don't take message boards lightly, as a member of many myself. They (as any message board) have a responsibility to maintain a level of decorum in line with what they represent. I have to wonder where and when does FR become responsible for the hatred they allow on that site? I mean seriously, I am supposed to believe the hate about Malia is about a peace sign? All the hypocrisy from them and their ilk during the David Letterman flap and they have the gall to attack Malia Obama? It truly makes me sick.

In the meantime, the Young Republicans elected a new president of their organization: Audra Shay... This Audra Shay.(the image is too large to post here, but it's worth the click)
Shay now claims that she was only responding to Piker’s first comments, not having noticed the second. The eight-minute gap between the second post and her response strains the credibility of this defense.

It didn’t take long for other posters on Shay’s page to do the math. First, Derek Moss wrote “What’s disheartening is the use of the word 'coon' in 2009. Wow… I’m usually outnumbered about 500-to-1 on Audra’s threads so go ahead, lemme have it, I deserve it.” He apparently expected to be criticized as among this crowd for calling out the racist comment.

Cassie Wallender, a national committeewoman from the Washington Young Republican Federation, then wrote: “Someone please help a naïve Seattle girl out, is Eric’s comment a racist slur?” She answered her own question one minute later: “Okay, why is this okay? I just looked it up. ‘It comes from a term baracoons (a cage) where they used to place Africans who were waiting to be sent to America to be slaves.’ THIS IS NOT OKAY AND IT’S NOT FUNNY.”

This was followed soon after by the chairman of the D.C. Young Republicans, Sean L. Conner, who wrote “I’m really saddened that you would support this type of racial language. ..wow! Thanks Cassie for standing up…”
They say we are now in a Post-Racialist Society; after learning about this, all I have to say is: Are you fucking kidding me? That is the new head of the Young Republicans. Sad state of affairs is this party and this country. There are people trying to dismantle the voting rights act using the excuse that we are in a Post-Racial world now that we elected a "Black President". Well I don't buy that crap. This party is becoming more and more polarized (as is the Country) because of sites like FR. I actually find myself in full agreement with Meghan McCain on this issue.
I woke up this morning in Las Vegas (tonight I’m playing roulette and betting on red) with a slew of emails about the likely election of Audra Shay as the new head of the Young Republicans on Saturday. You can probably guess how I feel about a woman who thinks comparing President Obama to a terrorist and referring to blacks as “mad coons” is funny.

The definition of insanity is repeating the same actions over and over again and expecting different results.

What exactly do the Young Republicans expect to achieve by electing a 38-year-old woman who thinks racial epithets are acceptable? Also, did I mention that she’s 38? And she’s going to be the leader of an organization with the word “young” in the title? Is it so implausible that people in their 20s (or even early 30s) could join the Republican Party—or have we just completely given up on their vote? Are we expecting “young” people in the Republican Party to soon be entering their 40s?
I was wondering about the age thing myself, but we can talk about age another time... Meghan is right about this in a lot of respects, but I think she misses a really big point -- this is what the Republicans WANT to look like. They don't WANT a moderate like Meghan McCain. They just don't want to be associated with the likes of FreeRepublic. They ARE however more than happy with Rush Limbaugh and his ilk... I don't know how they are going to manage distancing themselves from sites like this when they seem to be moving closer and closer to them in ideology.

I am not even going to talk about Jeff Sessions and the Sotomayor Nomination...

The fight for equality goes on. This is not Post-Racialist; it is Neo-Racialist, and we need to educate and communicate more than ever before. Racism is becoming more mainstream again, and that is dangerous for everyone in America.

:peace: and
Raine

I wonder when the party is going to hit bottom? Or maybe they already have and decided to start digging.

Comment by Raine on 07/13/2009 13:28:10
And more proof about the embracing of racism in the Republican party? Jeff Sessions will be questioning Sonya Sotomayor.

Comment by TriSec on 07/13/2009 13:33:29
Going to be interesting hearings, I'm sure. I hope we do get some "foot in mouth" moments from those sporting the "R" this week.

Vote & donate to help fund targeted ads against these jackholes.

Especially Kerry. Why the heck is he on the damn fence for a public health care option?!

I saw the post on FB about Malia - they are such hipocrates. They critized Letterman for a bad joke, which was accidently about the wrong Palin daughter, but then they go on to make just horrible remarks about a specific little girl. I just don't understand people like this I really don't.

Raine,

I love your post this morning. I threw up in my mouth more than just a lttle bit listening to Jeff "We Don't Need No Voting Rights Act" Sessions go on and on and on about the horror of a person's experience having an influence on their perspective on the world - the irony of this observation is too acute. He is so obviously a by-product of his redneck, racist, cracker upbringing it permeates everything he says and does - ughhhhh :rage:

Cheers,

mfaye for Malia and Sasha & to everybody

To be fair, I believe he was refering the Pres. time as Senator and his role in the last few SC hearings compared to the person he nominated for a position on it as Pres - it was bad compare/contrast
