Governor Giuliani? It could be.
Author: Raine    Date: 09/21/2009 13:46:27

Over the weekend it ws reported in the NYT that President Obama requested NYS Governor David Patterson to not run for election in 2010. Heads exploded around the internets. I know I no longer reside in NYS, so I understand it might be puzzling as to why I am writing about this today. I still love my home state, but this has far bigger implications for the Democratic party on a national scale.

I have seen everything tossed around from it being racist to it being revenge for his not choosing Caroline Kennedy. I submit to you that this is all utter nonsense. What it is, is pure politics. We usually don't see these negotiations made so public, but they happen all the time. That is just a political reality. I have read a number of reports that these were meant to be private conversations, and that someone leaked them.

Aside from the fact that Patterson has been doing dismally in NYS, he is already close to 60 points behind Andrew Cuomo for that seat. Cuomo currently serves as the States Attorney General. Here, check these numbers out: Marist College poll found him with a 20% approval rating, compared with 21% in June. Only 24% of Democrats felt he was doing well. 70% of voters said Paterson isn't a viable candidate for 2010, including 65% of Democrats.

Meanwhile, Cuomo's job approval rating is 69%. At the same time, 67% of New Yorkers felt he should run for governor, including 77% of Democrats.

Why is this important? Guess who most likely will be running as the Republican Candidate? Rudy Giuliani. Cuomo still polls higher than Rudy. This is critical because of the bigger national implication to this race. Not only would it put Giuliani back in the national spotlight, with the GOP having both California and NYS in gubenatorial control, it would literally give them a platform to say they are not a regional (read Southern) party. They can claim that they are on the comeback with the 2 biggest states on the coasts.

Also critical issue to this is all of the conservative districts in the state that elected Democrats to the House of Representatives. See Kirsten Gillibrand's former district (NYS-20) and John Halls District (NYS19). With someone like Giuliani on the ticket against Patterson, the chances of those districts (and a few others in the state) would tip back to the GOP. Imagine NYS going Red. Even more important, Rudy would at that point run again for President.

David Patterson - A non elected Governor, should do the right thing and step out of the race. He has shown to be an ineffective leader. He supported tax increases on middle income folks and opposed increases on the very wealthy. He mocked Unions and disabled people after being outraged at a SNL skit. (video at link)
Paterson was pushed onto the stage in a wheelchair. He was wearing sunglasses, a white shirt and a silver necklace over his tuxedo pants - an outfit similiar (minus the tux) to the one worn in the ad by 52-year-old Juan Pietri when he asked the governor: "Why are you doing this to me?"

This is, for the record, the same governor who chastised Saturday Night Live for making fun of his disability.

In his nearly five-minute response, Paterson left very few targets unskewered, taking aim at reporters, labor unions, goo-goos, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith and even his own free-spending ways vis-a-vis the executive mansion
The video is out there-- and don't think for a minute the GOP won't use it - They want NYS badly, and Patterson will be handing it to them on a silver platter.

Let's hope David Patterson does the right thing.

&
Raine

If Guiliani won as governor, the Republicans could claim the teabaggers represented the majority of Americans. That's a scary thought.

I don't want Ghouiliani in charge. He would be horrible and bring Fascism back like when he was mayor of NYC.

I think I've seen this before (or maybe it was for the airplane safety brochure). Either way - great stuff!

I guess the reservoirs are full and you won't be needing to steal water from Florida or Alabama any longer.

All right. I have to go head off and take care of a car problem. One of the many elements of chaos in my life right now.

A joint effort on the passing of Kristol by myself and MGM (mostly MGM)

"Kristol poisoned our national discourse and helped accelerate our political system's slide into dysfunctionality. If that weren't enough, he inflicted his spawn (allegedly the work of Dr Moreau) the evil, lizardlike homunculus William Kristol on America to continue the malevolent work of the Kristol family. Kristol's awful policies and dishonest arguments made life worse for millions upon millions of Americans. We are richer for having lost him.

Another excellent post Raine,

When is NY's primary? I am assuming that Cuomo will kick Patterson's ass in the primary, so why not let Mr. Patterson fail on his own? The voters will give him the message, no? Am I missing something here? Please set me straight (good luck with that ). Hope that everybody's week is off to a great start!

Cheers,

mfaye

Oh shit.. Oily Tartz all but uses the word "treason" to describe the court that slapped her birther ass.

Another "oh shit" - the plaintiff in the case this bitch filed doesn't want to be associated with her antics anymore!

"I became aware on last night's news that a motion to stay my deployment has been filed on my behalf," Rhodes wrote Judge Land on Friday. "I did not authorize this motion to be filed. ... It is evident that the original filing ... was full of political conjecture which was not in my interest. I had no intention of refusing orders nor will I."

Capt. Rhodes concluded the letter: "I do not wish for Ms. Taitz to file any future motions or represent me in any way in this court. It is my plan to file a complaint with the California State Bar due to her reprehensible and unprofessional actions."

I haven't mentioned it but it's the latest chapter in my ongoing financial difficulties which had to happen while I was trying to find a new place.
