Sept 2009: An American Lynching
Author: Raine    Date: 09/24/2009 13:05:18

Back in June, I wrote a blog about how the right wing was upping the ante. It pissed a good many people off. It was after we saw the assassination of a security guard in Washington DC. It was after the assassination of Dr. Tiller. It was 2 months after the DHS report came out that people went ballistic over. I almost could have reposted it word for word regarding the events that have unfolded over the past 24 hours. Here is part of what was written:
[..] Glenn Beck is out there actually telling people to not kill the messenger and that there will be more incidents like this. I kid you not - he's been doing it for a while. Yesterday, he went over the top.
This afternoon Glenn Beck and two of his guests argued that Adolph Hitler and the Nazi Party were "leftwing"; that "political correctness" led the committed white supramacist, James Von Brunn, to shoot a security guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC; and that ultimately President Barack Obama is the one responsible for the violence because his "bailouts" and "Socialistic" policies are engendering widespread anger. Beck denounced those who claim he is "churning the pot" because, he says, "the pot is already boiling." Seeing this spectacle with subtitles at the gym today led me to wonder if there are any laws on the books against using the public airwaves to incite violence. Because that is clearly what Beck is doing. I only caught about ten minutes of the show (about all I can stand) and it was a white reactionary tour de force -- incendiary, stupid, and racist.
[...]
Things are getting dangerous out there. That DHS report was correct. There ARE those who would undermine this great nation and make it less secure by justifying their own violent agenda by whatever means necessary. They would seek to create terror in the hearts and minds of those they find disagreements with. I have said it before, and I will say it again, it is Domestic Terror. Those that are complicit in fanning the flames of hatred regarding this terror must stop denying culpability. Words matter.
Well I have to give it to Glenn beck. He was right. Another person has been murdered in his culture war.

Yesterday, we found out that William Sparkman was found hanged in a remote area of Kentucky with the word 'Fed" scrawled across his chest. He was working for the Census. He was an Eagle Scout. He had just beaten cancer. Word has it they found his body on September 12. You can read about the man who was killed here. He was a decent person who had just made a career change. He was a father. Now he is dead, killed because he worked for the evil census.

Hanged. A man was lynched for working for the Census. Yes, I am making that leap. The word fed said it all. This was done by someone who was told to hate the government -- most likely it was FOX News. We have written about it many times on this blog. When one keeps fanning the flames of hate, it should come as no surprise that someone might actually kill another person.

Glenn Beck and the Right wing fanatics must be so proud today. After all they predicted more people would be murdered.

This is yet another casualty in the deadly culture war that has been waged by the right wing. How many more people need to be killed before America wakes up to what is happening? Hate speech is not free speech. Words matter. I am deadly serious.

and

Raine

Excellent post, Raine

I swear I had nightmares last night - images of hanging/lynched bodies kept floating across my mind and all the while the Fox news maroons were clapping - arghhh!! Sorry about your headache Scoop - hope that it dissipates soon. Take care everybody and keep an eye on that right wing neighbor - don't let them make an example out of you

Cheers,

Funny thing... A McCain worker lies about a Black man carving B in her cheek and we have wall to wall news coverage. A teacher murdered while working for the census? .

FWIW - Article 1, Section 2 of the Constitution requires that a census be made every 10 years so that the number of Representatives in the House are properly allocated for each state.

So stick that in your pipe and smoke it, you strict Constitutionalists...

Actually, this is the exact moment when you should engage that neighbor and pose the same question to them that I just asked everyone on FB - Will you now finally stand up and hold the people inciting such violence accountable for it?

Oh dear. I did not know that. I did find this though:
Kirk is a Kennedy family friend who served on the late senator's staff for eight years and is chairman of the JFK Library Foundation.

Kennedy's widow, Vicki Kennedy, and son Edward Kennedy Jr. had urged Patrick to pick Kirk.

Once a cheesy top-40 morning zoo DJ, always a cheesy top-40 DJ. The frog thing reminds of WKRP, "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!" Analogy-wise that is.

:wide eyed innocence: Beck can't be stupid he went to Yale, right? Interesting Glenn Beck fact, Joe Liberman got Beck into Yale as a "non-traditional student." Prof. Harold Hill didn't even last a semester he dropped out of the ONE class he was taking.

Seems like one of those days where the crazies are out everywhere. I can't say I ran into a political nitwit, but I was about half a mile of bus ride away from screaming at this drunk lady on the bus who kept harassing a couple of college students.

My stop came up too quick and I referred the problem to the bus driver instead, who was more than willing to get on the loudspeaker and tell her to shut up or get off.

Here is an alternate theory on Sparkman being killed. The part of Kentucky he was in is well known for the amount of marijuana grown there. Could be he was killed by hillbilly dope farmers who don't like the feds for other reasons.

Or hillbilly dope farmers who's dislike of the Feddal Gummit has been amped up of late by the usual suspects.

I disagree. No doper would want the attention that such an execution would bring. This is not Mexico. If it was a drug dealer, the body would never have been found.

A nazi?

creepy huh.

And i did a post on it. I'm just not into politics right now. I'm not that pissed at Obama, and the right are just annoying.

I'm not listening to Stephanie. Though I am listening to The bugle staring John Oliver (yes that one, from the daily show) and Andy Zaltzman. It's fun listening to our news through british comedy.

Not that I don't love yalls, but between homework, classes, girlfriend and D&D I am booked.

Friend Random, "The Bugle" is hilarious! A expat (for healthcare reasons) friend of mine in England told me about it.

okay, So I've watched that segment several times, Glenn Beck bit.

A few things.

When his hand is in the cage, he gets two in his hand (both can be clearly seen) one leaps out. other is still in his hand.

And then as he's about to toss it in, turn up your volume and watch the pot. You can hear the thunk of something going in, and see the splash.
