That's just a snippet from the fabulous "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military code.
Basically it means: Gay Bad. But Manliness is good, right? And what says "Manly" more than rape.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A congresswoman said Thursday that her "jaw dropped" when military doctors told her that four in 10 women at a veterans hospital reported being sexually assaulted while in the military.
A government report indicates that the numbers could be even higher.
Rep. Jane Harman, D-California, spoke before a House panel investigating the way the military handles reports of sexual assault.
She said she recently visited a Veterans Affairs hospital in the Los Angeles area, where women told her horror stories of being raped in the military.
"My jaw dropped when the doctors told me that 41 percent of the female veterans seen there say they were victims of sexual assault while serving in the military," said Harman, who has long sought better protection of women in the military.
"Twenty-nine percent say they were raped during their military service. They spoke of their continued terror, feelings of helplessness and downward spirals many of their lives have taken since.
"We have an epidemic here," she said. "Women serving in the U.S. military today are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire in Iraq."
I don't mean to imply that all men are prone to rape. I just want to point out the disparities in our policies and our training. Our US military has done such a piss poor job of training our soldiers that I'm not even sure that we shouldn't start excluding straight men serving from in it. Lets try a military of just gays and women. I could see it now: "An Army of Fab"; "We're Looking for a Few Good Homo's, Dykes, and Chicks"; "The Few, The Proud, The Best Dressed". Of course the Navy already has their own theme song thanks to The Village People.
Anyway, this DADT policy could be sweep away with the stroke of a pen from our President who is currently teasing us with the idea. No doubt he wants to see the response from the American people and the military.
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama reaffirmed his campaign pledge to end the ban on homosexuals serving openly in the military in a speech Saturday, but offered no timetable or specifics for acting on that promise.
It's an easy answer, yes let all Americans have the freedom to serve openly - but seriously punish those soldiers who assault other people - regardless of their sexual orientation. NO ONE should feel afraid of the soldier standing next to them.
Listen up straight guys, there is no need to fear the Gays. They are not out to "turn you" and sleeping in close proximity will also not have any influence on your sexuality and will not reduce your manliness. And remember you always have the "no homo" clause to insure that your bros know that you're not gay, as seen in this instructional video.
Am trying to compose my bloggie for tomorrow, but I still don't seem to be able to access that area of the website. I've tried everything I know from this end.

No dice, Tri
I've tried again rebooting, clearing the history in both IE and Firefox, in addition to logging out and logging back in.
All I see is "Subscribe" and "Set user options"

Great post VJ, I particularly liked this sentence of yours. It is so weird to me remembering back when it was so difficult for women to be allowed into the military with all the "fairer, weaker sex" arguments and for it to turn out that they are at risk of rape not from US enemies but rather from their fellow soldiers - just boggles the mind.

Good. I won't be subjected to Papelbon dancing an Irish jig in his underwear or prancing around with an empty beer box on his head.

Well, Tri, my bloggie post is going up at the link you provided. I suggest lots of no-doz if you're going to read it. I dunno, if anyone is interested maybe a little series of bloggies to make more sense of it.

Sorry to post on yesterday's blog, but I find it really interesting that the code only addresses what will happen to the "homosexual" that is "found out." It says nothing about the consequences for those that ASK!
