Political Whiplash
Author: BobR    Date: 01/22/2010 12:08:55

We are only 22 days into the new year, and already my neck is sore from all the excitement. One story after another has driven us to the edge of despair, only to be updated with new details, or new analysis that pushes our emotions to the opposite side. My vertebra can't take this much longer.

We had a prelude of this at the end of last year. Martha Coakley, the party-appointed heir-apparent to Ted Kennedy's senate seat held a comfortable double-digit lead heading into the holiday break. A week later, the polls showed the Republican challenger had pulled dead-even with her.

*whhiiippp*

The House and Senate had finally both passed health care bills, and the merging of the two was all that remained. We were disappointed that the bills weren't stronger, but it was finally going to happen! And then - Scott Brown beat Martha Coakley.

*whhiiippp*

It could still happen though. It would likely take 2 weeks to certify the results. The bill could be pushed through before he was seated. Inexplicably, President Obama urges Congress NOT to push the bill through. Congress has been ignoring his wishes all along, so they'll ignore this too, right?... right?... wrong.

*whhiiippp*

With Brown committed to stopping the health care bill, the only option left seems to be passing the Senate bill in the House. Can we do it? Nancy Pelosi says no.

*whhiiippp*

But wait - some House Dems are saying now that it could happen...

*whhiiippp*

All of this has been political fodder for those either wringing their hands in despair, or wringing them in evil anticipation of Obama's defeat in 2012. Surely if Massachusetts elected a Republican, the pendulum must be swinging the other way? According to a poll by FAUX News (of all places), Obama would still beat any comers.

*whhiiippp*

After an election where a President won using small contributions from individual donors, it seemed that Big Money was finally at a point where it could no longer influence the election process. Then came the huge SCotUS decision to allow corporations to buy elections.

*whhiiippp*

It's not all bad, though. Apparently there's some wording in there that forces the corporations to divulge the donations, such that we'd all know which candidates were bought by which corporations.

*whhiiippp*

Except that - that language already existed in law, and was one of the few items not overturned; it is not a new requirement:
Corporations and unions would still have to identify the sources of money for their political activity — a provision of current law that the court upheld in an 8-1 vote.

*whhiiippp*

Finally - it's not uncommon in political circles to have "mixed marriages" (think Carville/Matalin or Schwarzenegger/Shriver). Who would've thought, though, that Cindy McCain would be a supporter of gay marriage? - to the point where she's appearing in a NOH8 ad?

*whhiiippp-snnaapp*

Someone get me a neck brace.

Morning. I personally am suffering from vertigo from the goings on this week. And that does NOT include The Oma Factor.

The Oma Factor

Sounds like a quirky reality show competition - there would be the baking cookies round, the "you get me better then mom and dad" round, the always has candy in her purse round and then the final round to see who can spoil the grand kids the best and send them back to the parents round

The supreme court really blew it! Really. My question: can corporations that take money from the government in the form of grants, bailouts, subsidies or............ MILITARY CONTRACTS (i.e) donate unlimited amounts to candidates that, oh, say, want to "bomb bomb bomb __________ " (fill in the blank)?

Eliot brings up a really good point.

Good morning everyone.

Sure quiet here this morning. My left arm is still sore since I pulled it yesterday when trying to put some stuff in the addict. I just feel like my bad luck won't go away.

Since the word came down during Randi's show yesterday, did she say anything then unless she didn't hear until after the show aired.

Did anyone know beck is having another "rally" in DC in August?

Greetings from the reddest state in the Union!

Honestly, was there this much gnashing of teeth and rending of garments the last time a seat flipped?

It's not like we haven't had Republicans around here before...Silvio Conte represented Western Mass up to the late 80s honorably and well. and Weld was competent in the corner office, if not a total screwup. (but then we had Celluci and Swift and Romney, oh my!)

What's up with Randi? What did I miss being disconnected from streaming audio, lo these many months?

Comment by Raine on 01/22/2010 20:13:17
I forgot to bounce... next week, I promise.

in the meantime I can give a jiggle.

the last time this seat flipped we didn't have the Republican party, the media or the political climate we have now.

Alrighty folks...headed home!

I think I'm finally hitting the wall...xmas in retail catching up to me. I think I'll get home in one piece, though.

No Cub Scouts tonight, so I'll be putting some vodka in the freezer...gotta make a run to the market to get some soup fixins, then a big vat of Italian chicken soup to make while I check several times to make sure I still like vodka martinis...

Comment by livingonli on 01/22/2010 22:59:30
I haven't heard Randi do any Air America post mortem or maybe she's just glad they went under for the way things went. Except for Seder, Chuck, and the Ring of Fire people it looks like the rest of the good people have gone or were fired. A venue which brought about its own self destruction.

Comment by TriSec on 01/23/2010 03:06:44
I have checked several times to be sure.

I still like vodka martinis.
