Yesterday the Quake in Chile hit home because I have a friend who lives their part-time. It turns out he is okay, thank God, but for those hours when we first heard of the disaster we were at a loss of what to do. My partner and I watched the news and tried to contact him but were left waiting to hear from him. It's painful to have to wait while watching the devastation on the news. I imagine how much worse it would be for the family members waiting to hear from spouses and children, or from a fiance waiting to hear from their partner or waiting to hear if your Grandparents are alive. It's a long wait.

Things like this make me so grateful for things I take for granted. Even silly little things like facebook, which is, oddly enough, how my friend made contact with the outside world at first, and we found that he was safe.

Communication have come a long way since I was a child and we had those fabulous rotary dial phones. (Remember when you hated having to call a friend that had lots of long numbers like '8', '9' or '0' because if you made a mistake you'd have to ....... START FROM THE BEGINNING! That's right, youngun's, there was not 'CLR' button on the rotary dial phone).

Eventually, we got the push button phone (many of which came in different colors other than black, like Avocado Green). And eventually we had the advent of the beeper which became the status symbol of Wall Street brokers and pimps, both of whom would still have to trek to a pay phone to return a call.

Now, there is no excuse not to have many many friends and to stay in touch with them. So, so many ways. And ways to meet new friends as well. (Though, one should always be careful).

So, your homework assignment for today is to reach out to someone that you haven't heard from in a long time. Check to see if they are okay, what they are up to and to share something with them.

Corny? Perhaps. But as you know, I am a corny person.

Friendship isn't a big thing - it's a million little things. ~Author Unknown
