Good Friday News
Author: BobR    Date: 04/02/2010 11:28:55

This being Good Friday, and a beautiful day, and the prime weekend for the Cherry Blossom festival here in DC, AND my birthday weekend (*whew*), I just can't get angry about anything. So - in honor of Good Friday, here are some good news tidbits to get the weekend started...

First up: The impending job report is supposed to be full of good news. The reactions from both parties are as expected:
Republicans and Democrats are scrambling to put out their spin ahead of Friday’s unemployment report.

The report is expected to show the economy gained a significant number of jobs for the first time in three years, and a Thursday release by the Department of Labor that said that weekly unemployment claims had hit a new low did nothing to lower the expectations.

Republicans on Thursday emphasized that if the report is positive, it will only be because government is growing.

House Republican Leader John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) press shop issued a release predicting the numbers will be “inflated” because of temporary Census workers...

I'm sure those people getting a paycheck could care less whether they come from the government or a private company. Neither will the merchants who benefit from the newly employed spending their paychecks.

Next: We have been complaining for years about the war profiteering of government contractors. It seems that something is finally being done about it. The Justice Department is suing KBR for improper billing. Seems they charged for private security... while working with the military:
The U.S. Justice Department said on Thursday it sued the Houston-based military contractor KBR Inc for alleged false claims act violations over improper costs for private security in Iraq.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., alleged that KBR knowingly included impermissible costs for private armed security in billings to the U.S. Army covering the 2003-2006 time period, the department said.

KBR has been the U.S. military's largest private contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan. It has been criticized for cost overruns in Iraq, and lawmakers in Congress last month questioned the Army's continued use of KBR for logistics work.

The company said it had to hire private security because the government failed to protect its employees, and added that it believed the government filed the lawsuit to avoid reimbursing it for security costs.

The Justice Department said the case, which seeks unspecified damages, was brought as part of an initiative to crack down on procurement fraud...

Here's hoping this is just the tip of the iceberg and Halliburton is next on the chopping block.

Finally: You may have heard this, but Sean Hannity actually compared the teabaggers to Timothy McVeigh:
...a FOX News Channel broadcast on March 30 [...], conservative radio host and Fox anchor Hannity can be clearly heard telling his audience, "Can I add one thing. I think we won the debate."

"When you think of the vast majorities they have in Congress, and they had the bribe back room deals, corruption," Hannity continued, "that's because of the Tea Party movement, all these Tim McVeigh wannabes."

(NOTE: There is a video at the link...) So it seems that Hannity is tacitly admitting that the teabaggers are cut from the same racist violent cloth as McVeigh. Sure that can be a little scary, but it means that either Hannity is on the side of violent racism, or he pretends to be for ratings. Either one is bad bad bad...

Speaking of Teabaggers, here's a bonus click: Teabonics, the curious language (and spelling) of the teabagger movement...

It's Friday, ya bastahds - have a great weekend!
