Velveeta is perturbed this morning because she has recently learned from her sources ("The Soup" with Joel McHale on E!) that there is yet another "reality" teevee show about a large family. What is the world coming to?

You've probably heard me rant before about the over-sexed Duggar family which has 16, no, 18 kids rather, NINETEEN (19) children all of whom have been tortured with a 'J' name like Jinger or Jedidiah, but God forbid they would use anything ethnic sounding like Jose, Jorge, Jasmine or Juanita. So, it seems there are other shows out there in teevee land!! I won't bore you with the specifics. But suffice to say that there is a market in the world for viewing people who populate, seemingly without concern for the future of our world or the world their children will inherit.

I started lamenting this after the oil spill in the Gulf this week. It seems to be a subject that only a few dare speak its name – and it doesn’t start with a J. It’s OVERPOPULATION.

The planet is very soon to hit 7 Billion by estimates and it may already have. The US is well over 300 million and growing. Why we should be talking about over population is directly related to this oil spill as well as almost every other man-made and even some natural disasters. Because the Earth is getting crowded, we are forced to mass produce by necessity almost everything from our basic needs like food and clothing to our little perks like cell phones and TV’s to watch “The Soup”.

There are a few nerds talking about overpopulation but not many people seem to be listening, certainly not the Duggars. This is from a study done at State University of NY last year:
Dr. Allan P. Drew, a forest ecologist, put it this way: “Overpopulation means that we are putting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than we should, just because more people are doing it and this is related to over-consumption by people in general, especially in the ‘developed’ world.”

“But, whether developed or developing,” said Dr. Susan Senecah, who teaches the history of the American environmental movement, “everyone is encouraged to ‘want’ and perceive that they ‘need’ to consume beyond the planet’s ability to provide.”

The ESF faculty pointed to climate change as the second most-pressing issue, with the need to develop renewable energy resources to replace fossil fuels coming in third.

These scientists put overpopulation ahead of climate change as most pressing issue. I agree, even though I failed science along with math and social studies and life skills and, um... anywho.

And this is a report from some of the worlds leading scientists, according to the website. The report is from 1992 and the warning was dire back then. It’s been over 17 years since this report came out – but still, the Duggars and other families like them continue their proliferation.

Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms, and may so alter the living world that it will be unable to sustain life in the manner that we know. Fundamental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about.

(snip)
The earth is finite. Its ability to absorb wastes and destructive effluent is finite. Its ability to provide food and energy is finite. Its ability to provide for growing numbers of people is finite. And we are fast approaching many of the earth’s limits. Current economic practices which damage the environment, in both developed and underdeveloped nations, cannot be continued without the risk that vital global systems will be damaged beyond repair.

Pressures resulting from unrestrained population growth put demands on the natural world that can overwhelm any efforts to achieve a sustainable future. If we are to halt the destruction of our environment, we must accept limits to that growth. A World Bank estimate indicates that world population will not stabilize at less than 12.4 billion, while the United Nations concludes that the eventual total could reach 14 billion, a near tripling of today’s 5.4 billion. But, even at this moment, one person in five lives in absolute poverty without enough to eat, and one in ten suffers serious malnutrition.

People like the Duggars believe that it is Gods will for them to over-breed. They follow the path and advice of people like homophobic and definitely NOT GAY Minister Ray Comfort, he of the banana science theory. (YouTube search: “Ray Comfort + banana + evolution + Kirk Cameron” to see what I mean). These people believe that “Children are the heritage of the Lord…” Psalms 127:3 and while that is probably true, they are helping kill the planet that God also created.

Sure, there are plenty of “be fruitful and multiply” references in the Bible, but there are also references to taking care of the planet that many people choose to ignore:

"The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." (Genesis 2:15)

"You must keep my decrees and my laws.... And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you." (Leviticus 18:26, 28)

"The land itself must observe a sabbath to the Lord. For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and garner their crops. But in the seventh year the land is to have a sabbath of rest, a sabbath to the Lord.... The land is to have a year of rest." (Leviticus 25:2-5; cf. Exodus 23:10-11)

"The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine; with me you are but aliens and tenants. Throughout the land that you hold, you shall provide for the redemption of the land." (Leviticus 25:23-24)

"You shall not pollute the land in which you live.... You shall not defile the land in which you live, in which I also dwell; for I the LORD dwell among the Israelites." (Numbers 35:33-34)

"If you besiege a town for a long time, making war against it in order to take it, you must not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them. Although you may take food from them, you must not cut them down. Are trees in the field human beings that they should come under siege from you?" (Deuteronomy 20:19)

And these are but a sample. So, if the argument is that the Bible is to be followed, as I’m constantly reminded that, “Gay is bad (see Bible)” then those people will have to pay attention to all the other little parts. Even if it means ……… birth control!!! Even if it means.... recycle!! Or, stop polluting!!! Stop driving so much!!! Stop invading other countries for their oil!!! Stop the insanity....! (Okay, I went too far).
