WikiLeaks - Coming to a Theatre Near You
Author: BobR    Date: 12/08/2010 05:03:12

We've all enjoyed the James Bond (and Austin Powers) movies, telling ourselves that while there is a certain amount of cloak and dagger going on in the real world, for the most part there are no "super villains" nor "super spies" and the world of international espionage is fairly humdrum and plodding. The current WikiLeaks melodrama, however, seems to be a case of life imitating art imitating life. The stolen documents - published on WikiLeaks - and the man behind the site has all the makings of a blockbuster movie.

By now, everyone is fairly familiar with the plot. A mid-level military officer decides (for reasons all his own) to make off with gobs of classified documents. A lot of what he grabs is salacious, but - from a national security standpoint - not very serious. It does embarrass the U.S. though, and a few documents can (and likely will) harm individuals in certain areas.

Naturally, the U.S. government wants to put a stop to it, and there are plenty of other governments that would like to give him a smack-down as well. Up until recently, he's been able to take advantage of neutrality arrangements, but once the rape indictment was sent out via Interpol, the jig was up. Jullian Assange was arrested and jailed without bond on Tuesday. Add to that sites like Amazon and EveryDNS.net dropping him, MasterCard stopping donations from flowing, and a Swiss Bank freezing his funds.

Does the story end here? Of course not. This is where it gets interesting. Like any "super villain", he has loyal minions scattered around the world. They have taken actions already, such as crashing the website of the Swiss bank that froze his funds, and getting another fundraising site setup (currently XipWire.com. They also have a "poison pill" that was supposed to keep authorities from arresting him. They have not released it yet; perhaps it is the only thing standing between him and an assassin's bullet (did I say this is like a movie?).

For some international intrigue from the other side, it appears that WikiLeaks' Swedish servers have come under attack again with what appears to be a deliberate Denial Of Service attack. Add to that one of the woman accusing him of sexual misconduct may have ties to the CIA and you only have to ask "Is her name 'Pussy Galore'?"

To make this movie complete, you need some clumsy numbskulls from the U.S. political system to complete the cast for comedy relief. That comes in the form of Newt Gingrich who wants Assange classified as an "Enemy Combatant", and Sarah Palin actually compared him to Osama Bin Laden. Joe Lieberman (douche) wondered aloud on TV why Assange hadn't been charged with treason (um... because he's not a U.S. citizen?... and not even in the U.S.?)

This movie is still writing itself. Will the authorities blink and let Assange go rather than have the "poison pill" cache of documents get released? Will Assange supporters dump the docs? That would pretty much guarantee Assange's time on earth is limited. It's almost like a nuclear standoff.

Whatever happens, this WILL become a movie at some point in the future. It's a better story than most of dreck coming out of Hollywood these days.
