Ask a Vet

Good Morning.

After a weekend of rhetoric, there seems to be little more that can be said about the Khan affair. Trump sure stepped in it, didn't he?

Veering away from Ask a Vet a bit this morning, this past weekend has got me wondering if maybe it's time.

You're the only folks that know what my faith choices have been in recent years. As a marginal member of what is about to become a persecuted minority, I feel it far more prudent to remain extremely private in these matters.

But the Khans have suddenly made it respectable and honourable to be public Muslims.

We try very hard here at AAV to not lose sight of the actual people we write about. It is, after all, a veteran's news column - not politicians, contractors, or the military itself.

I have known some Blue-Star families in my neighborhood, but nobody bears the Gold Star in my local acquaintances. One can only imagine what that must be like - and one would fail.

“No one, no one has given more for our freedom and our security than our Gold Star families,” the president said at the Disabled American Veterans convention in Atlanta. “Our Gold Star families have made a sacrifice that most of us cannot even begin to imagine. They represent the very best of our country. They continue to inspire us every day."
