"It couldn't happen to a nicer guy..." - which is why it's happening to a much nastier guy. The former occupant of the Oval Office was facing civil charges related to his habit of over-valuing real estate for bank loans and undervaluing them for tax purposes. By now, the news has pretty widely broken that the NY AG has announced the case has turned into a criminal one:

During his 4 years in office, the orange scumbucket enjoyed a certain amount of insulation from legal entanglements. Now, however, he is Citizen Douche, and has no protection. He also has a lot of enemies he made with his scorched earth personality and "if you're not for me, you're against me" mentality. Despite the unbridled and unattractive fealty he gets from certain members of Congress, his world is rapidly shrinking, until - one day - it will hopefully be just a square box with bars on the doors.
New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) announced in 2019 that her office was investigating [T****] Organization finances.
Her office filed a lawsuit last August to compel the organization to comply with subpoenas for an investigation into whether former President [T****] and his company improperly inflated the value of its assets on financial statements.
Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for James, said in an emailed statement Tuesday: "We are now actively investigating the [T****] Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA." Levy declined to comment further.
Add that to the long list of legal problems he's already facing:
- Atlanta prosecutors are investigating whether he criminally tried to overturn the election by asking for a specific number of votes in GA
- DC and Federal prosecutors are investigating whether he can be charged with inciting the Jan 06 coup attempt
- Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr - besides looking into the aforementioned tax issue - is looking into the hush money payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal.
- Vance is also looking into relationships with Deutsche bank
- The DOJ may be re-opening the Russia probe, and attempts to obstruct justice
- Two civil lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct
