A Respectful Friday
Author: wickedpam    Date: 05/28/2021 13:25:21

It's Memorial Day weekend. That 3 day weekend were we are supposed to honor our fallen but really we spend it kicking off summer with beach trips and barbeques. We are nothing if not multi-taskers I guess.

It was in 2014 that Arlington National Cemetery Historic Park District was announced by the National Park Service.

The historic district was determined to be nationally significant in the following ways: 1) as America’s most sacred national cemetery and as a national memorial to the military history of the United States; 2) it contains the burials of persons of national importance, including presidents, Supreme Court justices and countless military heroes; and 3) as the final resting place of service men and women from the Civil War to the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it continues to serve as a national monument to the America’s war dead. Established in 1864 on the grounds of Arlington House (aka the Custis/Lee Mansion) during the Civil War, it has become one of our most sacred grounds. If you've ever visited, there is a quiet you don't hear much in the suburbs of Northern Virginia right next to the Beltway.

And the Eternal Flame.

Today, approximately 400,000 veterans and their eligible dependents are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Service members from every one of America’s major wars, from the Revolutionary War to today's conflicts, are interred at ANC. As a result, the history of our nation is reflected on the grounds of the cemetery. Arlington National Cemetery, Explore History

Please have a good weekend and be safe out there.
