The Sad Little Convoy
Author: BobR    Date: 03/16/2022 12:32:37

We know how it started. Canadian truckers were protesting requirements that they be vaxxed and masked when entering the United States. They blocked the roads that feed traffic between the two countries, claiming they had the right to infect anyone they wanted. Canadian authorities finally pushed them out. The truckers were having so much fun not delivering any goods, decided to take their pity party on the road and came to the USA.

That's how it started. Their cause is dead, but no one has told the patient.

Now they are hunkered down in Hagerstown, MD, a small town NW of Washington DC. It's about a 45 minute drive to DC from there, and every day since they arrived, they've driven down from Hagerstown, did a lap or two around the beltway, and then drove back up to Hagerstown. DC is know for bad traffic on the beltway, and their presence has not exactly been welcomed:
... many of the vehicles sharing the freeway with the so-called People’s Convoy protesters are showing disdain for the group’s willingness to tie up traffic over vaccine mandates that are either already gone or phasing out by flipping the bird at the participating trucks.

[...]

“We go around the Beltway, birds are flying. Birds are flying everywhere. That’s the kind of people that live up there,” the unidentified protester said.

[...]

The driver told Petrizzo that his group is “trying to straighten [Washington, D.C.] out, we’re trying to clean it up, that’s what this is all about, trying to get it cleaned up.”

However, RawStory wrote that the group’s demands are unclear “since the Supreme Court struck down President Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate, and indoor mask requirements throughout the United States have been completely lifted in recent weeks.”

It's amazing that they think their actions will "straighten" anything in DC (other than people's middle fingers), especially since the beltway never touches DC proper.

This week, they got a little radical, and decided to actually drive into DC. Of course, DC police were not about to let them onto city streets, so instead it just made gridlocked traffic worse:
The traffic meltdown Monday stemmed from the trucker convoy. It spread out and moved through the District on interstates 395, 695 and 295 — eastbound on the Southeast/Southwest Freeway from the 14th Street Bridge to the 11th Street Bridge — as well as traffic control operations that blocked exits to keep traffic flowing.

Chris Rodriguez, the director of D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency, said the plan is to continue to block the offramps so the convoy would move through the District and head back to Hagerstown, Maryland, where they have been congregating since last week.

“We have to assume it’s going to continue at least for the next several days,” Rodriguez said, but added that the number of trucks and vehicles in the group has decline[d] significantly.

[...]

That meant that many drivers who were driving with the trucks — and those caught up in the convoy — could not easily exit the freeway.

“The traffic control for the truck convoy included closing every single ramp on the eastbound freeway for more than two hours,” WTOP traffic reporter Dave Dildine said.

“There were no eastbound exits available and eastbound drivers, whether in the group or not, were sent all the way across the Anacostia River southbound on I-295 way down past [Joint Base Anacostia] Bolling toward the sewage treatment plant at Blue Plains,” Dildine said. “In the process, many desperate drivers there tried to turn around on a muddy median strip on I-295 and got stuck. Everyone else incurred excruciating delays.”
(bold-face mine)

They tried again yesterday, and likely will again today. I have to wonder how those remaining have the money for all this fuel since they obviously aren't working. Regardless, their impotent protest is not accomplishing anything except to make people even more angry at their stupidity.

It's warming up in DC, and the birds are flying - especially on the beltway when these yahoos are driving on it. Time to give it up, fellas. No one cares about your freedumbs.
