Things that are, that weren't. Author: RandomDate:01/19/2009 12:31:14
I can say with great certainty, that this isn’t what I had planned on writing. I was really planning on being rude, angry, obnoxious…not you guys, but just in general. First to people who can’t let go of Hillary losing, then to just in general to the bigoted assholes out there. But…I don’t really think I’m up for that. For once in my life I’m not in the mood for taking pot-shots at people who are a few cards short of a full deck.
I want to talk about MLK, Our new President, Myself, segregation, and America. I’m in a weird kind of mood while I write this, and I really can’t describe it, but it isn’t really that bad.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great man in his ideas, his promises, his wishes, his dreams. I believe in what he talked about, or at least to the extent I’ve heard. About dreams of tomorrow, where race doesn’t mean anything. Where we are together under one banner. This is something that we have not reached, and something I can fear will not happen in my lifetime. But I see it happening, slowly.
In 1954, a decision was handed down by the supreme court in the case of Brown v. Board of education of Topeka. I’m sure I don’t have to tell the readers of this post what that case was about. I bring it up to provide a contrast to today. Will schools integrated, the world hasn’t come to an end. In fact, I am willing to bet, that the single case in 1954 IS the reason that our new president was elected. Though, depending on who you talk to, that means the world is going to end too…so can’t really stop them from thinking such things.
Because of the integration of schools, I have lived in a world, where racists were just caricatures on television, or movies. The first time I ever really knew a real and true racist was a man who insulted me for supporting the next President of the United States. It was strange…that such a person still existed to me. I wasn’t mad at the man, I can’t even say I felt pity, I was just confused.
I see a better future for tomorrow, because I see the growth from the past. We have come to see the first African American President. We know this will encourage many minorities to stand up and work harder. We know that because of Hillary, many women were empowered, to know that you can make it that far. We know that with hard work, we can reach the top. That if we try…and we try…and we try…we can do what a decade ago was considered improbable. What a century ago was considered impossible. What at the founding of this nation was considered unthinkable.
Time will forever move forward, and we all ways be striving for a goal. We will forever be moving, fighting for what is right, and what will be right for all. We will forever working for truth, and justice for all of the people, and creatures of this planet. We will forever be making this a more perfect union.
