Bouncing around

Cleaning out the drawer of the blog mind....a concept I shamelessly steal from time to time from Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe...

Let's start overseas, in merry olde England. Some big party is going on regarding Her Majesty. Of course the pomp and circumstance is interesting, but as Americans, we fought a war so we didn't have to give a fuck.

70 years is a long time. Think about it, she became queen at age 25, back in 1952. My mother was a mere ten years old at the time. For nearly everyone, there has been no other British Monarch.

But....she's been notably absent from many of the festivities. I've got to go back to our own Massachusetts "royalty". In July of 2009, Senator Kennedy refused a visit from then President Obama, and was too ill to attend his own sister's funeral. Three weeks later, he was dead himself. Methinks this doesn't bode well.

But moving on, let's stay British.

Of course, the intro to the charming Mary Poppins. Here Mr. Banks is smug and in control, little knowing what is about to happen to his tiny little world. This was me three years ago, when I returned from Florida on February 11, 2020. Since then, it's been nothing but disappointment and heartbreak.

"The life I lead" now is very similar to the way we lived through the Great Recession. Fortunately, the lessons we learned are still valid and we're surviving, but it took nearly eight years to recover from that fiasco. I'm hoping it won't take that long to dig out this time.

There has been a little joy in the TriSec compound recently - the new Disney series Obi-Wan is brooding, cerebral, and a bit "emo". I've found it worthy of pondering and debating with the other force-sensitive in my home. I regret that I made the mistake of skimming a couple of news stories about the "fan-boy" backlash.

In my mind, any Star Wars is better than no Star Wars. While it may not be true of the genre itself, all of the websites are dominated by white, racist, males. It's horrible out there, so I don't play.

Yet again, a new Star Wars performer has been subject to a flurry of racist backlash online. After the debut of Obi-Wan Kenobi last Friday, star Moses Ingram has had to spend the weekend shooting down trolls on social media instead of celebrating her new Disney+ series.

On her Instagram story, Ingram shared a couple of hurtful messages she received from strangers. “You’re days are numbered,” one user sent the actress. Another reads: “You suck loser,” and then, “You’re a diversity hire and you won’t be loved or remembered for this acting role.”

In Obi-Wan, Ingram stars as Reva Sevander, aka “The Third Sister,” an Inquisitor who bows to Darth Vader—essentially, she’s a villain. While we’re not programmed to like villains (and Reva is especially vicious, targeting a young Princess Leia), that hasn’t stopped fans from cuddling up to iconic characters like Vader, Kylo Ren, and Darth Maul.

Ingram opened up about dealing with these folks in another Instagram story in which she spoke directly to the camera, saying there are “hundreds” of hate messages sitting in her unread inbox.

“There’s nothing anybody can do to stop this hate,” Ingram said. “The thing that bothers me is this feeling that I’ve had inside of myself—which no one has told me—but this feeling that I’ve just got to shut up and take it. That I’ve just kind of got to bear it. I’m not built like that.”
