No More Kings

It's a Saturday Morning. Let's set the wayback machine, shall we?

As your body grows bigger,
Your mind must flower.
It's great to learn...
'Cause knowledge is power.

It's Schoolhouse Rocky,
That chip off the block
Of your favorite schoolhouse,
Schoolhouse Rock!

Ah yes, the good old days. Weren't things simpler and clearer when we were all much younger? There's a few of us that could probably still sing a bunch of those old lyrics - hell, I learned the Preamble from these videos and still remember it that way.

Sure, they're simplistic and aimed at schoolkids, but even these lyrics have a modicum of truth behind them.

I am rather struck by the last verse.

We're gonna elect a president! (No more kings)
He's gonna do what the people want! (No more kings)
We're gonna run things our way! (No more kings)
Nobody's gonna tell us what to do!

George Washington could have been king. There is some scholarly debate about whether such an offer was ever made, but as one of my sources notes, we still have Mr. Washington's strongly worded letter of rejection, although reading it now it feels out of context.

The politics of today are increasingly alarming in that regard. What do the republicans want? You've certainly seen the memes about what their platform is. What I fail to understand is the brutal opposition to literally everything that might make this country better and advance our society. We have become a government of contradiction.

For whatever reason, the Trumpian Fascist wing of the party has embraced an overbearing, incompetent, uncouth lout as their standard-bearer. Of course he can do no wrong in their eyes, and he is the "saviour of the country", whatever country it is that they believe they are living in.

The first Trump presidency was a disaster, domestically and overseas. Given the current rhetoric, and nightmare scenario of him running again, it seems that we have forgotten the simplistic lessons of our musical selection today.

We once wanted "No more kings", but it seems that the majority of the country today would prefer a dictatorship.

We have indeed strayed far from what the Founders had in mind. I'll drive past Sam Adams and John Hancock later today; I'll let you know how many RPMs they're up to.
