All Crime is Local
Author: TriSec    Date: 07/19/2025 11:40:32

Good morning.

A couple of curious local stories caught my eye this morning. Our own late Representative Thomas P. "Tip" O'neill remarked long ago that "All Politics Is Local". Seems like all scandals are local, too.

Starting in my own backyard, my own representative in General Court, John Lawn, was recently involved in a DUI on Beacon Hill. Allegedly after an event at the State House, he ran a red light and crashed into a parked car. Boston Police quickly picked him up.

A Massachusetts lawmaker who initially pleaded not guilty when he appeared in court Thursday on drunken driving and other charges changed his plea at another hearing just hours later.

Rep. John Lawn, the Watertown Democrat who chairs the influential Committee on Health Care Financing, was arrested for operating under the influence near the State House early Wednesday morning.

He appeared for his arraignment and a second hearing on Thursday. In that second hearing, he admitted to sufficient facts on the charges of to drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Boston police say a man driving behind Lawn around 1 a.m. Wednesday witnessed him hit a parked pickup truck near the State House and then take off. That witness flagged down police, and Lawn was pulled over and arrested for drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police said the 56-year-old Lawn smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, had trouble balancing and even had trouble giving an officer his driver’s license when they pulled him over.

Lawn will lose his license for 45 days and will be on probation for one year -- which prosecutors tell us is standard for a first offense.

I'm not sure if his treatment is "standard for a first offense". After all, this happened on Wednesday, it's now Saturday, and everything is all done. If you or I did it, I don't think we'd be all done already. RHIP, after all.

But let's head out west. Another curious case is out there. Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell has just been convicted of breaking and entering - a felony - at her own Stepmother's house.

Minnesota State Sen. Nicole Mitchell (D) was convicted of first-degree burglary on Friday after breaking into her stepmother’s home last year.

Mitchell, who is a former meteorologist and lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard, was arrested in April 2024, while serving her first term in the Minnesota Senate.

Mitchell has not indicated whether she will resign from her role in the statehouse, where Democrats hold a one-seat majority. Republicans have called for her resignation for months.

Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (D) said in a statement that Mitchell told her colleagues she would resign if she were to be found guilty.

“I expect her to follow through on that pledge,” Murphy said on Friday.

The judge has not set a sentencing date, but Mitchell could face prison time, The Associated Press reported.

Other news sources indicate that she has indeed either resigned or has been expelled. Unlike Massachusetts, however, this upsets the balance of power in Minnesota. The Democrats had a thin, one-seat margin, but now the Senate is tied. It's unclear what the next steps are for a replacement.

While these are serious things, perhaps you heard of something more farcical right here in this fine Commonwealth? If you've been to a major sporting event, or a concert, or otherwise...perhaps you were lucky enough to be on the Jumbotron?

It's an innocent enough moment and fun for the crowd, but what if you're doing something on the sly that maybe you don't want anybody else knowing?

A data company said Friday that its CEO had been placed on leave and that it is investigating after a "kiss cam" at a Coldplay concert in Massachusetts showed two people embracing, who then quickly hid themselves from view.

The video of the incident went viral. Data company Astronomer said Friday night that CEO Andy Byron has been placed on leave.

On Wednesday, as a “kiss cam” displayed couples in attendance at Gillette Stadium, in Foxborough, a blond woman and a silver-haired man were among those projected on screen. As soon as the pair realized it, the woman covered her face while the man ducked out of the frame.

The awkward moment took the internet by storm, with the video clip gaining millions of views across platforms like X, TikTok and Instagram. Internet sleuths quickly speculated that the couple is tied to Astronomer, a New York-based tech company.

The band's frontman took note of the incident, and remarked "You’re OK. Oh, what? Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”

Must have hit pretty close to the mark to get them all riled up like that, don't you think?
