In 1932, there was a famine in Ukraine. The event, called the
Holodomor resulted in the starvation deaths of millions of Ukrainians. While there is some debate as to whether it was intentionally caused by Stalinist Russia, it seems as though that is the case. There was a Ukrainian Nationalist movement at the time, and the starvation seems to have been intentional and deliberate.
There is a memorial to this near the U.S. Capitol:

It visually represents the disappearance of grain over that time period (1932-1933)
I was reminded of this when I heard John Oliver say on his show (covering the starvation crisis in Gaza):
“Look, ‘Gaza is starving’ is a sentence that’s objectively true, but it’s also slightly misleading because it’s too passive,” he added. “Gaza is being starved by Israel.”In both cases, it's a more powerful government withholding food from a less powerful people as a tactic. When I see pictures like this:

I can't help but be reminded of pictures like these:

You have to wonder how a people how have suffered so much can then allow their government to turn around and do the same thing to another culture of people.
