Election Day 2019 is a few days in the rear-view mirror. Since neighboring New Hampshire is the first in the nation primary, the local airwaves are already flooded with early presidential campaign ads.

Locally, we had a mix of incumbents and newcomers win elected office. A longtime Scouter friend of mine lost his City Council seat after nearly 30 years. A newcomer, and brother of another of my oldest friends in this City, won the Ward Concilor seat in my district. My longtime friend Mayor Jeanette McCarthy easily won re-election against another friend, former Councilor Diane LeBlanc. All politics IS local, after all.

Thirty Years Friday

It is still vivid in my memory watching the Wall being broken down on CNN in November 1989. Still makes me get happy and weepy.

It's been speculated that the catalyst for that happening was Bowie's concert in Berlin in 1987.

Blue, Blue the Country's Blue
Author: BobR    Date: 11/06/2019 13:46:04

Yesterday was election day, albeit a rather small off-off-year one. We voted for mayor and city council, and I am sure there were others around the country. The big races, however, were in VA, KY, and MI. The results were VERY good for Democrats.

VA voted for its legislature, which has been controlled by Republicans for years. Two years ago, with control of the House of Delegates hanging in the balance, there was an actual tie between the Democrat and Republican for one district, and the winner (the Republican) was chosen by (not kidding) drawing a name from a hat. This year (as far as we can tell), there are no tied races, and the Democrats won control of both the House of Delegates AND the Senate. This means the Democrats control the legislature AND the Governor's Mansion. VA is one of the last states that could finally pass the ERA and get moving along to be added to the Constitution. For Virginians, it also means common-sense gun laws and health care help.

Good Morning.

A mixed bag, this week before Veteran's day.

Of course the most important issue for everyone today is voter turnout. Did you vote today?

When the history books are written of this time of our lives, I pray they will be as ugly as it is living through it in real-time.

America's Greatest Fear
Author: TriSec    Date: 11/03/2019 13:23:19

Good Morning.

A day late and a dollar short, but TriSec brings back a nutritious weekend blog!

It's time for a quick quiz. What is the most deeply-seated societal fear held by all Americans, depending on what news source you believe?

It used to be Nuclear War. Maybe it's One World Government. It might be people that don't look like you moving in next door. Maybe it's ISLAM!

Do YOU Support the Troops?
Author: BobR    Date: 10/30/2019 13:22:51

Most everyone reading this remembers the aftermath of 9/11/2001. Our country was reeling from the attack and wanted vengeance. As we readied ourselves for sending our military into battle, we also remembered the aftermath of the Viet Nam war. Soldiers came back to a country that saw them as "baby killers" and ignored or reviled them, despite the fact that most of them were drafted, and sent off to fight in a war they didn't start. In 2001, in retrospect, we knew better.

Without the draft, and after years of only minor skirmishes, our military was not as staffed as we would have liked for the initial incursion into Afghanistan, and the later illegal invasion of Iraq. In order to bolster staffing, we offered immigrants a way to fast-track their citizenship if they joined up and fought on behalf of the country they were trying to adopt as their own. That was the promise.
