Rethinking Veterans Day
Author: BobR    Date: 11/11/2015 11:58:24

As we celebrate the service our military veterans, we should think for a moment just how they gained that title. They were either drafted into service (Viet Nam war and earlier), or they signed up of their own volition. They become "GI" (Government Issue), which means the government in general (and the military in particular) "owns" them and their bodies for use in protecting our country.

That doesn't mean they stop being people. They do not stop being someone's sons or daughters, someone's spouse, nor someone's mother or father. We as a country owe them a sacred oath to not take their service lightly, nor to toss them into harm's way when it isn't really necessary.

Good Morning.

We'll start on the home front today, and one of our longest-running, and least-successful wars. Which of course, would be the "War on Drugs". We've been listening to rhetoric and news about this for the better part of three decades, going back at least to Nancy Reagan's homespun "Just say No", or maybe even longer than that.

The People can't win
Author: TriSec    Date: 11/07/2015 13:30:56

Good Morning.

I'm sure you're familiar with a reference made by our sixteenth president just about 152 years ago now. (19 November 1863). It was a little something about government "of the people, by the people, for the people."

But my experience shows me that "The People" are having an increasingly difficult time governing themselves. We've just had an election, and while I was focused on a local municipal race, I've heard this one called in some corners, "The year of the incumbent". I cannot disagree.

Ask a Vet - Addendum
Author: BobR    Date: 2015-11-04 11:17:31

In January 2009, President Barack Obama was sworn in as president. Almost immediately, the Tea Party sprang up, proclaiming they were "Taxed Enough Already". All who opposed the president (and the concept of liberalism in general) began complaining that government was too big, and they needed tax relief. Politicians of every stripe proclaim every election cycle that they will "cut taxes".

The reality is that family federal income tax rates have been dropping for decades. For an "average" family of four, they paid their highest rate (11.79%) in 1981. Since then rates have dropped steadily with some minor fluctuations. In 2014, the rate was 5.34%, less than half the rate in 1981. There's not much lower that they can go.

Because of this we've had to cut federal spending as well, and budget deficits have become harder to erase with decreasing tax revenue for government programs. As has been the case for decades, our military is our single biggest budget item. Our military spending is a much larger percentage of our budget than most of our allies, which is why they have high-speed trains, high-speed internet, free college, and complete low-cost health care coverage, and we don't.

You'd hope that all that taxpayer money that gets fed into the maw of the military-industrial complex would get spent on worthwhile things. The reality is much more grim.

Good Morning.

So, now we're on the ground in Syria. Oh, sure it's "Special Forces" being deployed to train Syrian rebels, but it's an old story. Seems to me that an awful lot of wars have begun with this first step. And the fact that our old enemy that used to fly the Red Star are helping the other side kinda throws this back under the Cold War umbrella, doesn't it?
