Pelosi the Proxist?
Author: Raine    Date: 11/20/2014 14:30:06

John Stewart set his sights on house Minority leader Nancy Pelosi the other night for her not allowing Representative Duckworth to vote by proxy for leadership roles on committees.
The offenses committed by Pelosi — whom Stewart championed as a longtime fighter for women's and voting rights? She denied Rep. Tammy Duckworth's request to cast a proxy vote in the Democratic leadership elections. Duckworth was advised by her doctor not to fly to Washington in her eighth month of pregnancy. Duckworth (D-Ill.) also is a double-amputee Iraq War veteran, or, as Stewart put it, a Democratic demographic Turduckworth. The reason for denying the proxy vote? Pelosi said it would set a precedent ... and Duckworth happened to be supporting someone other than Pelosi's chosen candidate for a committee position.

The Money Pipeline
Author: BobR    Date: 11/19/2014 13:05:54

The new Republican-led Senate hasn't even started planning their legislative assault yet, and already the Democrats are helping them ease into it. They actually brought up a vote on the Keystone XL pipeline. Fortunately, it failed - by one vote:
The Senate's 59-41 vote Tuesday night was a nail-biter to the end.

The bill needed 60 votes to reach the White House. The House passed it overwhelmingly last week.
[..]
Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu pushed for the vote in an effort to save her seat in a Dec. 6 runoff election in Louisiana. She faces an uphill battle against Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy, who authored the House bill.

Yes - they are willing to risk the environment and/or force President Obama to veto the bill just so Mary Landrieu can tout it as bringing more pollution to Louisiana? Does she really think all those people who voted for the 3rd place Republican are going to vote for her over the 1st place Republican? Does she think they won't be slightly repulsed by this blatant political action?

Federal workers strike for higher pay
Author: Will in Chicago    Date: 11/15/2014 18:18:54

We have heard much discussion in our politics about the 1 percent and the rest of us. (Actually, a lot of attention has also been drawn to the .01 percent.). So,it is not surprising to see workers striking for higher pay. In particular,I would like to focus on a story about federal contract workers who feed our Congress members, clean and do other jobs and are struggling to support themselves and their families

In which today's "fluffy" is a nice euphemism for fat. Most of you have met me in person, as you can tell I'm not a petite or even "normal" sized woman. for those of you that haven't - surprise! I have been a plus sized woman for all of my adult life and some of my teen years.

Made in China
Author: BobR    Date: 11/12/2014 14:50:15

It's probably common knowledge that pollution in China is bad. What's generally not pointed out is just how bad...
A thick haze of smog has descended on parts of northern China, pushing pollution to more than 20 times what the World Health Organization considers a safe limit.
[..]
In Hebei, a province bordering Beijing to the north, concentrations of pollutant particles called PM2.5 reached upwards of 500 micrograms per cubic meter, according to Beijing's air quality index. The WHO's recommendation for maximum healthy exposure is 25 micrograms.
[..]
According to the U.S. State Department's air quality guide, levels of PM2.5 between 301 and 500 micrograms are considered hazardous to health and constitute a "serious risk of respiratory effects in the general population," while anything above 500 is literally off the charts.

Most U.S. cities have a PM2.5 concentration of 20 or below.
