So, I had some ideas earlier in the week to tie in with my Bill of Rights series here, but of course I didn't bother to write anything down and now they're gone.

You have such a pretty face
Author: Raine    Date: 09/04/2014 13:36:46

I have a story to tell.. All of the events are true. The reason why I am telling this story is because I read this excerpt from Senator Gillanbrands biography.
“Good thing you’re working out, because you wouldn’t want to get porky!” one of her older male colleagues said. Her response: “Thanks, a—hole,” she said in an excerpt from her book.

An unidentified southern congressman once held the former upstate House member’s arm while walking her down the chamber’s center aisle. “You know, Kirsten, you’re even pretty when you’re fat,” he told her.
Isn't that nice of said southern congressman?

Putting out the Fire with Gasoline
Author: BobR    Date: 2014-09-03 10:30:37

Last week, I wrote a blog indicating how blowback has been a big factor in the mushrooming problems in the Middle East. When President Dubya cut loose all those trained professional Sunni army soldiers in Iraq, it was only a matter of time before it bit us in the ass. Add to that providing financial and military hardware aid to insurgents in Syria, and we created a perfect storm for ISIS to evolve from the mess like some monster surging forth from a toxic waste dump in a bad science fiction movie. Except in this case - the monster is real.

Good Morning.

Today is our 4,713th day in Afghanistan, and our 75th day back in Iraq.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 2,342
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,125
There have been no new casualties in Iraq.

We find this morning's Cost of War passing through:

$ 1, 561, 884, 575, 000 .00

Reflections on Labor Day
Author: Will in Chicago    Date: 09/01/2014 15:08:47

Labor Day is here again. A day that is meant to honor workers often becomes a day to celebrate the end of summer. So, I thought it would be wise to take a look at the state of Labor in the U.S. as well as how we got here

Stand Your Ground

So we know that your more likely to be stopped, searched, molested or even killed if you're black. It used to be DWB (Driving while Black) mostly in a car that looked suspect [read: expensive car]; but now you can just be walking down the street, sitting on a bench or driving a crappy car loaded with kids.

Amendment III
Author: TriSec    Date: 08/30/2014 11:54:50

Good Morning.

I've been pondering the Constitution of late, particularly how the GOP and Congress have been completely shirking their responsibility to it in recent years.

Let's visit with an Amendment I bet no one thinks much of, that being #3:

Amendment III

No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

Reading it some 227 years later, it seems like a quaint throwback to the Colonial Era. Surely nobody is going to be sticking soldiers in anybody's houses in the 21st century?

I have been gaming since my friend's family got an Atari and we played Pong. I was hooked. Favorite arcade games at the roller rink were Tron, Q-Bert, Centipede, Frogger and Tempest. At the Stop and Shop or Rose's Ice & Coal, were we would walk for lunch at school, it was the always popular Pac-Man then later Ms. Pac-Man. I got an Intellivision II as my very first gaming system and what I've always thought was the best game ever - Burger Time!

From Point A to Point B
Author: BobR    Date: 2014-08-28 10:47:27

The recent murder of an American journalist in Iraq is not unprecedented, as a visit to the Newseum in DC will show. Journalists have paid the ultimate price for many years while exercising an American 1st Amendment right here - but mostly abroad. More troubling is the news that an American died fighting alongside his ISIS compadres. There has been criticism of President Obama's handling of the Middle East, but the die was cast years ago.

To the casual observer, ISIS - the Islamic terrorist group - is just another flavor of al-Qaeda. They are - in fact - enemies. ISIS is a Sunni group; al-Qaeda is Wahhabi. The current government of Iraq is mostly Shiite, the same as Iran. If you think of The Troubles in Ireland as Protestant battled Catholic, you'll get a better understanding of what's going in in the Middle East.

One of the big questions is where did ISIS come from, and how did they get so powerful so fast? To answer that, we need to look back to 2003.
