News of the Day
Author: Will in Chicago    Date: 2015-08-12 11:29:27

As I had a lot to do last night, I thought that I would share some stories that I found.
There is always a lot going on in our world, and too often, important stories get buried by spectacle.

One topic that I care about deeply is corruption. I believe that no one should be above or below the law. Sadly, the Department of Housing and Urban Development , however, is trying to pass a rule to allow banks convicted of felonies to still make federal mortgage loans

Rising to address income inequality
Author: Will in Chicago    Date: 2015-08-10 10:58:05

One phrase that received little attention during the Republican presidential debate last week was income inequality. While Jeb Bush talked about creating an economic growth rate of 4 percent, I am not sure that we can take him seriously as his policies seem to be a repeat of those of his father and his brother. Instead, talk of income inequality and solutions to it have fallen mostly to the Democratic presidential candidates - Senator Bernie Sanders, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and ex-Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley - chief among them.

There is growing evidence throughout the world that the austerity policies practiced in many nations have failed to restore prosperity and have instead created more misery

George Pataki
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 08/09/2015 14:04:34

Velveeta is only now learning that George Pataki is running for President. Did ya'll know this? When did this happen?

Since he obviously won't be around long, let me write a little bit about him so we can get to know who he is before he quietly goes back from whence he came.

I had a blog

but given yesterday's news, I think I'll let it ride. (Besides, it really needs more development anyway.)

Let us all ponder the cycle of life here on this mote of dust, and give comfort to those in need.

Heard there was a debate last night, didn't watch it. Instead I decided to wait for the comedy wrap up this morning. Despite recording his before the debates, Jon Stewart wrapped it and everything in our political world up pretty soundly.

Three Types of Bullshit

The Artifice of Debate
Author: BobR    Date: 08/05/2015 13:10:23

Tomorrow night is the first Republican debate of the 2016 presidential campaign season. In years past, primary debates were typically held in the states where primaries were about to be held, sponsored by the local newspaper, and - ostensibly - focused on the issues important to those residing in that state. The big national primaries between the two selected candidates were conducted by the League of Women Voters.

Things have changed quite a bit. On the national level, the League of Women Voters bailed on the process when the two major parties escalated demands to the point where they simply threw up their hands and walked away. On the primary level, things have changed too.

While primaries may have been sponsored by newspapers, the papers at least had a reputation for reporting news on a generally sober level. Their editorial pages may have a slant one way or the other, but fact-based reporting was the norm. That was even the case with network news (pre-cable), back when it was considered a loss-leader rather than a profit center.

Which brings us to the present day.

Good Morning.

Today is our 411th day back in Iraq. It's our third iteration now, as earlier this week marked the 25th anniversary of Iraq invading Kuwait (August 2), which started this entire affair, but I digress.

There have been no new casualties reported.

We find today's Cost of War passing through:

$ 1, 630, 909, 300, 000 .00

According to the Twitter machine, there is a very good chance that Joe Biden may run for President.

I am not sure how this would work politically. Our current President has all but endorsed Secretary Clinton and she is really doing pretty well in the polls.
