Americans and American news media seem to jump from one obsession to another. For a week or two they focus on one thing, with chat boards and tweets and breathless reporting on all aspects and potentialities obliterating all other items of concern. The most recent overhyped news story? The Chinese balloon.

This all began when citizens noticed the balloon over Montana (it IS "big sky country" after all). This created some wild speculation, and faux outrage from the RW media (FOX "News", of course). Is it a weather or spy balloon... or is it carrying a new variant of COVID? Why wasn't it shot down as soon as it was seen? Biden just let it spy on us - what does China have on him??? And - of course - there was Marjorie "three-toes" Greene carrying a balloon around the Capitol on the day of Biden's SOTU while grinning like the idiot she is.

You know the drill. Sigh...

President Biden's SOTU address last night was quite a surprise. A lot of people (probably myself included) expected a sedate defense of his record, and a hat-in-hand request for the Republicans to pass more of his agenda. Instead, he delivered a barn-burner of a speech, verbally joisting with some noisy rude Republicans (and mostly winning). This was followed by an incomprehensive word salad by Governor Sarah Huckabee (R-AR) who delivered the "rebuttal" via video.

Biden started out pleasantly, congratulating McCarthy (R-CA) for (finally) achieving the Speakership of the House, then turned around and (in a sort of Kanye/Swift moment) stated that former Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) was the best Speaker of all time. It didn't get any better for Republicans after that.

Went to bed feeling good. Woke up and saw the terrible news about the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria and the front page of WaPo. Under that headline, I read this, and did NOT click it.
