End of Year Round-up (updated)
Author: BobR    Date: 2010-12-31 13:00:00

UPDATED 11:37 AM EST: see bottom for updates...

It's New Years Eve, and the cliche thing to do is to look back on the year's events and wax philosophical about their significance. So - who am I to buck tradition? Let's review some of the major events of the past year; I'm sure there are a lot of things we've forgotten about.

The year seemed to start badly. After the death of Ted Kennedy, a special election was held to fill his seat. The assumption was that a Democrat would easily take it, and everyone was shocked when it was Republican (and erstwhile Tea Partier) Scott Brown who won the election. Over time, he has shown, however, that he is not quite as reactionary as the Tea Party had hoped, angering them by voting with Democrats on several key pieces of legislation.

There was also the horrible earthquake in Haiti, whose residents are still waiting for their country to be rebuilt. Not unlike NoLa and Katrina, if you're poor and black, the initial outpouring of sympathy quickly gives way to indifference and beaurocratic malaise.

There was also the SCOTUS ruling granting corporations the right to contribute to (ie: buy) candidates as if the corporations were private citizens. The outrage has been somewhat bipartisan, yet no legislative redress has been successfully worked out.

Speaking of legislation, there were numerous success stories with regards to important legislation this year, including:
  • Healthcare reform
  • Wall street reform
  • START Treaty
  • DADT repeal
  • Unemployment benefits extended
  • Food Safety act
  • Strengthening economy and jobs market
  • On track for removing troops from Iraq

There were also several that didn't make it through, or were compromised to ensure the passing of the previous legislation, including:
  • Tax cuts extended 2 more years
  • No environmental protection bills
  • Net neutrality cure may be worse than the problem
  • DREAM Act

And even though we are on track to remove troops from battle in the Middle East, we still have troops in Iraq, and Gitmo is still open. Hopefully, both of those will change in the coming new year.

Last year, I made a few predictions about what would happen in 2010. One of them proved to be true:
We'll have more security theatre at the airports, as the government and the airlines try to create a veneer of apparent safety.

The porno scanners and gate groping are proof of that. Do I have any predictions for 2011? That one is simple: With a Republican controlled House and an even distribution of power in the Senate, we will see a lot of noise and posturing coming out of the nation's capital, but very little will actually get done.

Too easy? What are YOUR predictions?

Oh - and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Fox news viewer being less informed then other viewers - I add this because Faux for all its posturing and calling out of the what they consider the "mainstream media" have with their numbers of viewers become the mainstream media and I'm not sure people really get that

Small Business Jobs Bill ( H.R. 5297)

Also, the HIRE Act was extended. it was passed in March, and gave incentives for companies to hire those that are unemployed.
Why is that good?
Richmond GMC shoppers should inquire with Haley GMC about the 2010 Tax Stimulus Package. The package provides significant tax benefits to business owners. Haley GMC owners who purchased an eligible vehicle may be entitled to tax relief benefits such as: Immediate eligibility for an expense deduction or an additional 50% bonus of accelerated depreciation.

The Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act of 2010 (HIRE Act), signed into law by President Obama on March 18, 2010, extended many of the tax benefits of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 related to expensing certain purchases of SUV's, trucks and vans in 2010. In summary, the act states that taxpayers that own and use commercial vehicles in a trade or business -- professionals, small business owners, and others -- can deduct the cost of such property through asset depreciation deductions on their tax returns.

Oh and regarding the EPS, there was this on Christmas day.

The Obama administration took separate actions this week to protect clean air and federal wilderness areas, reaffirming that the White House can pursue its goals without depending on help from an increasingly combative Congress.

In the coming two years, that may become a more popular approach.

In a statement posted on its website late Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency announced it is moving unilaterally to clamp down on power plant and oil refinery greenhouse emissions, announcing plans for developing new standards over the next year.

EPA administrator Lisa Jackson said the aim was to better cope with pollution contributing to climate change.

"We are following through on our commitment to proceed in a measured and careful way to reduce GHG pollution that threatens the health and welfare of Americans," Jackson said in a statement. She said emissions from power plants and oil refineries constitute about 40 percent of the greenhouse gas pollution in this country.

President Barack Obama had said two days after the midterm elections that he was disappointed Congress hadn't acted on legislation achieving the same end, signaling that other options were under consideration.
So there that to the list as well.

Looks like it will be a quiet night tonight. I am not going out tonight since I have no vehicle and I really have no desire to go out. Maybe if I had a significant other it would be another story. Being single really sucks sometimes.

Was planning on spending NYE at my brother's for his usual party, but have been sick all week (think I spent a good part of the day yesterday zonked out at my desk), I'm going to need the 4 days to recover.

So there's the Annual Three Stooges New Year's Eve Marathon.

Comment by livingonli on 12/31/2010 23:09:51
I miss the ol WSBK marathons but AMC will be showing them all day New Year's Day as well. I have decided to finally get caught up on my Doctor Who viewing since I have the specials and season 5 blu-rays to watch them on.
