It's Not the Economy, Stupid.
Author: Raine    Date: 10/13/2011 13:26:12

This may be the understatement of the year: The GOP talks a lot about the deficit and jobs. They do it ALL day long; they do it on TV, on the radio, on the web and in the papers. They are saying it on campaign trails and in town halls. They send that message via the United States Postal Service. They keep asking the President: 'Where are the jobs?" It's not just the candidates, it is also the leaders and the rank and file Republicans members of the House and Senate. Who can forget what Mitch McConnell said? The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.

They talk jobs. They talk economy. And what do they do? They attempt to pass laws curbing women's rights. From Politico:
The bill would ban federal funding of abortions. It would also ensure that providers have protections if they believe abortions violate their consciences and prohibit the tax subsidies in the health reform law from going toward a health plan that includes coverage of abortions except in cases of rape or incest or for the safety of the mother.

Planned Parenthood warns that the bill could allow hospitals to refuse to treat a patient whose life depends on having an abortion. The group argues that a hospital would be able to use the bill’s conscience clause to escape the federal law — the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act — that requires hospitals to treat all patients.
Eric Cantor says it's all part of the Economic reform and cost-cutting the GOP promised to Americans. No, really:
“That was a part of our Pledge to America that we had always said that we were going to move to eliminate government funding of organizations that perform abortions,” Cantor said on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. “That’s something that we said we were going to do, and we’re upholding that pledge.”
The bill likely won't see any movement in the Senate, and the White House has has said it would see a veto pen. The question remains: how serious is the GOP about the economy? For me, the answer is: They are not serious at all. They would rather limit a woman's right to choose - even in the case of death - and privatize health care for the elderly. They want to ban marriage equality. They are fighting to keep DOMA in place.

Let's go back to this chart I posted yesterday in the blog comments:
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6220/6220560854_f41ce6dca0_z.jpg
Take note of how things are flattening out. It was after the GOP took control of the House and we lost a super majority in the Senate. That majority had a mere 4 months life-span...

Does anyone REALLY think the GOP is going to come up with a jobs plan when they are more concerned with taking away people's rights? It's been said before but worth saying again, they are purposefully trying to hurt the economy for political gain. They are FAR more concerned with the likes of a dead Jerry Falwell and the likes of the [im]Moral Majority than they are about Americans and jobs. This is a reality: The GOP didn't create jobs before Obama, and they won't create them now. What are the odds they will actually try if they take the Senate and the White House? My bet: ZERO. They care about taking away personal choice in individual liberties from anyone not like them. Black, brown, female, gay... you name it, they are against equality and are proposing as many bills as they can to do just that.

It's not much better with the current crop of Current GOP Presidential hopefuls
In an election that’s supposed to hinge on jobs and the economy, the Republican presidential contest in recent months has been defined by almost everything else.

Immigration and children’s vaccines. Race and religion. Homosexuality and health care. The issues range far from the economic woes that concern most voters, but they have captivated Republicans in New Hampshire and other early voting states, providing the candidates with ways to distinguish themselves from their rivals. The biggest applause lines on the campaign trail usually have little to do with a candidate’s economic positions.
In other words, they talk one game and totally walk another. The economy is stalled, and the blame lies with them for not passing the American Jobs Act. They are more concerned with social issues, and not in a good way. This frustrates me almost more than anything else. Why people trust them to fix the economy at all is beyond my comprehension. They have a terrible track record.

They are however very good at bait and switch. James Carville once famously said: It's the economy, stupid, and - for the Dems (particularly the President) and a majority of America - it still is. It's quite the opposite for this Republican Party.

When my Ovaries create a job, I might change my mind... Until then, they are simply lying to Americans. OR maybe they aren't:

"The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president"

It seems they have a few other things they want to achieve while they try reach that goal. In the meantime, they are clearly showing how little they care for the Average American voter. I would dare say they show contempt - not just for the President, but for Americans. For the GOP, you are too stupid to know they are not about about the economy, and never were.

and
Raine

I still say that the dark, evil, part of me wants to see the Republicans succeed in destroying America.

But I'm not sure what that would gain our side.

It's not worth it. This goes beyond sides to me at a certain point. I see your point, I feel that as well sometimes. IT would be easy and nice to see the crap fall apart and be able to say "I told you so".

Those 4 words are not worth it compared to the countless people in our Nation and around the world that would truly suffer as a result. They would never truly know why they are suffering (even tho so many already do) because we have a media that doesn't inform in a truthful way.

I don't want destruction more than what we are already witnessing. I think a lot of people aren't aware that we are witnessing it right now. We still have a good chance to pull it back from the brink.

Yeesh, even our "Yankees Suck" chant isn't that harsh....and any one wearing an 'opposite uniform' gets a free pass to help the Jimmy Fund here. Yes, even the boss got one back in the day.

The fans are asses, because they seem to have let their joy of booing get in the way. I liked this part of the article:
Fighting cancer, finding homes for kittens, working in a soup kitchen … who cares? We'd be disappointed in any fan base that didn't exhibit this Pavlovian response to seeing a rival on their big screen.

And isn't the arena game operations crew a little at fault here? Tossing up an NHL-produced ad with three loathed players isn't going to attract a reaction like this? Really? They couldn't do a quick promo in-house with a Flyer instead?

We're as guilty as anyone for taking whacks at the Flyers fan piñata. But please tell us Flyers fans aren't now going to be labeled pro-cancer? Please?
No the op crew is not at fault. Loathing a player, fan rivalry are all fine, but keerist peeps, keep a cool head!

Shite, Even I wouldn't boo Drew (I poop golden eggs) Brees or ANY MEMBER of the Dallas Cowboys for a good cause.

For the record, when the GOP says Job creators -- they are talking about the one percent.

That 1% is sitting on a pile of cash and is NOT creating jobs despite the fact that they are experiencing the lowest tax rates in history.

“This kind of plagiarism makes me wonder how many things about Scott Brown are really genuine,”

Hmm. I can't say I disagree.

But seriously, a 'Technical error' is the GOP redefining that term as well? When I grew up we called it plagarism.

Just a thought:

When libertarians say the the free market regulates itself don't they see historically actually creates monopolies? (Money seems to condense itself. the more condensation, the more expensive things seem to be -- )

On the flip side of the coin, every time this country broke up monopolies it actually created more jobs?

It even drove the down cost of services. Only government is able to break up monopolies. There has not (to the best of my knowledge) ever been an example of the free market principles ever breaking a monopoly.

Oh I think the GOP is VERY serious about the economy.

If you mean they are serious about keeping it "crashed" at all costs.

And they know their minions are too stupid / greedy / racist / (insert derogatory comment) to care.

Good day everyone. If people still remember the damage Bush did, I have to wonder how some polls seem to suggest that people are willing to put these people back in charge to screw it up again. After Hoover, it took the GOP almost 2 decades to see that kind of power again so either the polls are fudged or there are a lot of Americans who are really stupid.

Did anyone see that wee little segment on ABC news last night about the contractors going out of their way to buy items "made in the USA"? Particularly how one economist thinks that if they bought just 5% more, it could create a quarter of a million jobs?

Liv, did you take alook at the poll link I included in the blog?

There are some really interesting results, depending on how the questions are asked. It's why a I question the legitimacy of a lot of polls these days. one thing that seems clear, time and time again, people are worried about the economy.

The problem is the media. It seems like every poll that seems to favor the GOP is given prominence and anything that refutes that (even noting that the House has a much lower approval rating than Obama) doesn't seem to get as much play in the corporate media.

When I was in the doctor's office, there was a story on WNBC news that was actually showing how the people at OWS were actually working to keep the area as clean as possible due to their large numbers. The only issue seemed to be how some businesses were not allowing them to use the bathroom with one place even keeping theirs locked (god forbid you have an emergency and you have to really go there).

This is another reason why I felt this 'sanitation' problem intriguing. I have read time and time again that OWS has taken special pains to keep things sanitary.

Now the news (on Seattle prog talk) is reporting that the owners of Zuccotti park are the ones telling people to leave. that they will start enforcing rules, like leaving personal belongings and sleeping on benches.

Zuccotti Park is privately owned.

No, I'm not going. This weekend I will probably just curl up and take advantage of my free Sunday Ticket which work hasn't allowed me to enjoy so much.

Although I did see that Janeane Garoflao and Tom Morello would be there. Tom Morello is an interesting one since I didn't picture him as a comic book person.

Bold face mine.

Ray Kelly is saying that people won;t be allowed to bring sleeping bags back to the park after the clean up. According to NBCNY:
As a steady drizzle fell Thursday over the park confusion was high over when the protesters will be ordered out -- and where they'll go during the evacuation.

"The cleanup is a pretext to remove us from the camp. And we can return only if we abide by the rules of Brookfield Properties,'' said Justin Wedes, 25, a public high school science teacher from Brooklyn who was sweeping the pavement with others. "We're redoubling our efforts today.''

Brookfield did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the cleanup.

After a group meeting Thursday, Occupy Wall Street vowed to clean up the park themselves, obviating the need for professional cleaners to come in and force the protesters out.

I think this is clearproof that the mayor and the police department have decided to act upon the requests of private enterprise over public will.

And it is proof of why libertarianism and privatization of public space doesn't work. (think about that for a minute... )

Hello, bloggers!! Raine, thanks for a very interesting blog.

I would argue that the GOP is all about image, trying to sell the image that the economics of Reagan and the Bushes work. Their economics do work -- for the upper one percent and in driving jobs out of the country.

As for myself, I am at home doing stuff. I am feeling a bit better today, but I find myself expecting to turn around to see my dog beside me.
