Deja Vu All Over Again
Author: BobR    Date: 03/14/2008 12:29:26

The great Yogi Berra uttered the famous phrase "it's like Deja Vu all over again" when discussing Roger Maris and Mickie Mantle hitting home run after home run. It's hard to look at the Iraq war and remember Viet Nam and not think the same thing. The wasted lives, the wasted money, burning the village to save it, the inability to get out of it despite its unpopularity.

Looking back on how we got into this war in the first place, are we experiencing another case of "deja vu"? How likely is it we'll start another war - this time with Iran?

Pretty likely, based on certain observations. Writer Dave Lindorf refers to it as the Oh Shit Moment:
Every horror movie has that “Oh Shit!” moment, when the hero or heroes are huddled in some creepy hideout, and suddenly something happens that tells you that the monster is just around the corner, or just about to attack. In “Jurassic Park” it was the pulsing ripples in a cup of water, heralding the arrival of a T-Rex. In “Jaws” it was the deep bass music, letting you know that a monstrous shark was about to attack.

Well, we just got our “Oh Shit!” moment with the just-announced resignation of Admiral William J. Fallon, the military commander of US Middle East operations.

Adm. Fallon, 63, famously said that an attack on Iran would not happen “on my watch,” and is widely believed to have already threatened, along with a number of other top generals and admirals, to quit the service if the Bush administration were to launch an air attack on Iran.

There are numerous other indicators that we are on the precipice, gazing down into the abyss, and waiting for that inexorable tip that will begin our descent. Terry Atlas at U.S. News & World Report points out 6 Signs the U.S. May Be Headed for War in Iran. Some of them are a bit of a reach, but you can read the article yourself. Briefly, they are:
1. Fallon's resignation
2. Vice President Cheney's peace trip
3. Israeli airstrike on Syria
4. Warships off Lebanon
5. Israeli comments
6.Israel's war with Hezbollah

Fallon's resignation reminds me of the revolving door of generals we had during the lead up to the war with Iraq. Anyone that didn't toe the line, both in ideology and support for the poor military planning was "retired". Remember General Shinseki?

Then there was the trumped up "evidence" of WMD. Despite an intelligence report to the contrary, Iran is still being accused of developing nuclear weapons. Last time the Bush Administration used manipulated intelligence and this time Bush is just ignoring it.

Here are some more "rememberies" from the early days of the Iraq war. How often do you still see the mainstream news "report" (or should I say "repeat") the propaganda coming out of the White House as if it's all credible fact?

Bush sees the authorization to use force in Iraq as carte blanche to use force anywhere in the world at his discretion, including in Iran. We can see the signs - it's like deja vu all over again. This war, however, needs to be stopped before it gets started.

Mornin' Everybody,

Great but scary post BobR...I hope like hell that we are not headed for a show-down with Iran, but I don't trust the Bush/Cheney administration as far as I could throw them. I've written umpteen e-mails, snail mail letters, and have stood out on the sidewalk holding up peace signs and getting flipped off by ignorant Okies. I don't want another war, but I feel powerless to stop it - HELP! Any suggestions on what we can do to stop another senseless war would be much appreciated...

Cheers & Happy Friday :)

Gah. I feel a little like you faye, but I am hoping that the way this country has been moving, wth more and more people dissastified with what is being done in our name, more will start writing letters and making those phone calls.

Remember that NExt wednesday is the 5th Anniversary of our illegal invasion, we HAVE to get the word outto people and get them in the streets!!!

Good morning everyone.

It feels like that kind of morning.

When discussing Cheney and peace shouldn't "peace" be in quote marks?

In less than a week, we will be marking the 5th anniversary of the Iraq War. As we take action in Washington DC, and in communities in every corner of the country, on March 19th, the 6th year of death and destruction will begin.

It's hard to believe, impossible to accept.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Will You Please Go Now!

The time has come, we don't care how. But Hillary Rodham Clinton will you please go now!

By The Editors, Paul Heriot Illustration

The time has come, We don't care how.

But Hillary Rodham Clinton

Will you please GO NOW!

Your campaign is becoming

An endless charade,

So get off the trail,

Burn out now, don't just fade.

You can swim down a river

Of crocodile tears.

You can surf on a wave

Of terrorist fears.

Enough with the red phone!

Enough with the NAFTA!

If you like,

You can go now by White Water Rafta.

Hillary Rodham Clinton,

We don't care how—

HRC,

Will you please GO NOW!

You can leave on McCain's

Straight Talk Express.

You can leave all made up

in a Muslim headdress.

Kucinich will take you

On his UFO

But good God, dear Hillary

Just go go, GO!

You can ride home on coattails

Or in big biz's pocket.

Or maybe you'd like to

Ride NASA's new rocket.

You've raised a gazillion

From execs on Wall Street.

But when it comes to real change,

Barack's got you beat.

You can go by limo

Or lobbyist jet.

You can ride an old donkey

Just get, Hillary, GET!

Your negative ads

Are bringing us down.

You should get off the air,

You should get outta town!

You can go to New York

Or back to The Hill,

But get yourself home

....and don't forget Bill!

Hillary Rodham Clinton,

We don't care how—

HRC

Will you please GO NOW!

Newt weighs in on the current Obama comment:

Gingrich: ‘Ferraro’s remark was silly, childish — and true’

Friday, March 14, 2008, 09:13 AM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Newt Gingrich is saying that Geraldine Ferraro’s comment about Barack Obama was “childish” and “silly” — and “something that probably was true.”

We’re catching this third hand. The observations by the former House speaker and Georgia congressman were published on a Human Events blog, but Gingrich made them during a Thursday appearance on the Fox radio program “Brian and the Judge.”

Ferraro withdrew from the Hillary Clinton campaign after saying the following one week ago, to a local California newspaper:

“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman [of any color] he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”

Her great-grandmother was a spy for the Brits in WW II

She skipped the Star Wars episode I premiere so she could study for her high school finals

Natalie was an understudy for Britany Spears.

She was Alan Dershowitz's RA when she was at Harvard.

Her 1998 high school paper on the "Enzymatic Production of Hydrogen" was entered in the Intel Science Talent Search.

People who should be thinned from the herd:

A man was jailed Thursday on charges that he forced his 7-year-old daughter to kill the family cat by holding a knife in her hand and making her stab the pet.

Danield J. Collins, 39, told his children during a visit to his home Sunday that he wanted them to "learn how to kill" and gave his 11-year-old son a knife to do it, according to an affidavit filed in the case.

The boy tried to save the cat by hiding it under a sofa bed and putting ketchup on a knife when Collins went to the bathroom. But when the father realized that the cat was not dead, he forced his daughter to hold the knife and then held her hand tightly as he drove the knife into the animal, Muncie police Detective Jami Brown said.

Police said Collins stabbed and strangled the cat himself, and told his son to throw the dead pet in the trash. Officers retrieved the carcass to be used as evidence.

A bucket brigade has been formed to send Rainetinis down to the trapped blogger, but all of the salt seems to be absorbing them before they can reach their destination. Zambonis have been ordered and are on their way...

The Zamboni has been delayed, Santa is, after all, in the off season being a pervert...

Raine has pressed charges. I was trying to get that baby jump started, and Santa got his signals missed... :D

***4F NEWS ALERT***

Watertown, MA

Eyewitnesses are reporting a cave-in at the little known AthenaMine in this city. Early reports indicate at least one blogger trapped hundreds of feet below the surface. Officials state there is light and heat where the miner is trapped, but there is no word on oxygen or water.

Stay tuned for further details.

Aw honey, Velveeta will send down a rope with breathing apparatus and scotch.

I sincerly hope that Randi is not going to partake in the Swiftboating of Barack becuase of this preist.

And I am going to say something that may not be very popular here.

This man, has a point. His detriment is that he used the word HILLARY. you get rid of that word, and we could really be having a real interesting about debate about race in america. NOT an easy debate, but real good one. HE used Hillary t make a point, and he used bArack to make the opposite side of that point.

I dunno. No one ever seems to want to hear things like this. Using BRack to show the plight of the black man makes barack look like a martyr, and he is not. using Hiller only makes all women look like vixtims... we are not.

But the discussion NEEDS To happen. I have seen black people lose a cab in cities. WHY? becuase I was waving one down at the same time. I do not think it was chivalry.

I used to LOVE to give those cabs to the people who deserved it becuase they were waiting longer than me.

You had to be there I guess. But I know things that I see, and I saw it.

Wrong vote #. It was #145. 212-197. Congress.org can be a bit cumbersome - not a lot of info right after votes.

As such, I'll shut up about it until they fill in all the info.

Comment by wickedpam on 03/14/2008 19:37:48
The thing is - I'm tired of that kinda arguement. I don't care if someone is whatever color they are. It's a descirptive term and that's it too me.

Comment by Raine on 03/14/2008 19:38:36
I dunno if I agree with Randi.

This should not be Obama's problem. This man is a preacher at his church, and barack may be a member of the hurch, but we are NOT supposed to be choosing our presidents becuase of the church.

THAT man said this, barack did not.

Comment by jd_in_ny on 03/14/2008 19:43:18
Whether it SHOULD be Obama's problem is irrelevant, isn't it? - it IS a problem to a lot of people out there.

There are a lot of discussions about race and gender that need to take place, and while I do not think that Barack represents all men of color or Hillary represents all women, ignoring the issues doesn't make them go away. Wouldn't it be a coup if Obama could take this moment to open up a positive discourse? He can bring people together and dispel a lot of the fear that will arise if we just try to sweep it away.

Agree with that!!

Anyone one who has ever been to any church may have heard something they don't agree with from the Priest, Rabbi, Minister, Cult leader, Preacher, Supreme Space Alien, High Priest........whatever. Unless they constantly enspouse views different from you, then you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

And anyone who has been to a southern Baptist church and heard this type of HellFire preacher, knows that they have a tendancy to exagerate in order to drive the point home. They're just being theatrical.

That's very true - and it's not like you can't find a dozen examples to support this.

Well, the Dow is off 235 points today. That 200 Billion did a world of good, didn't it?

Comment by Raine on 03/14/2008 19:54:50
OK. Randi said that Obama has been a member of this church for over 20 years. She said that this man married him and Michelle. She said that this is a problem for Barack. Why? because a leader of his church said some things that are really uncomfortable for some people.

Well let me tell you. As far as the Democrartic Party goes. I have been a member for 22 years. My leaders have said MANY uncomfotable things... in recent years... things like *impeachment is off the table* So basically, becuase I so deeply disagree, I should LEAVE The party, denounce it? Should BArack do the same?

When did we get to a point of a having a religious litmus test for a candidate?

I have LONG disagreed with many members of this party. I still am with the party. What does that make me?

Comment by TriSec on 03/14/2008 19:54:55
I've been using this website recently to track the stocks.

Go and take a look at the six-month and one-year charts of the Dow average. That ought to give you pause. This week's fluctuations are nothing, it's been trending steadily downward for quite a while now.

Article VI, Raine...

Great point JD.

Why does it take a black man and a woman running to actually make most of america to the point of being willing to talk about this?

I mean it seriously. Here and on our MB, I am really happy that we have not been afraid to try to tackle this crap, but WHY does it take actually looking at a woman and a black man for people to even begin to actually be willing to discuss this?

I used to call it white guilt, but hell I dunno what to call it anymore.

Which is all well and good, except that the whisper campaign saying Obama is a Muslim is the truth (which many, many, many believe -- even Democrats) has forced Obama supporters to point to his 20-year membership in this Christian church.

It angers.

And the hypocrisy after Falwell and Hagee and the rest... gah!

Well, I am a white person who says "what he is saying is factually true. I wouldn't want to hear it from the pulpit in that tone, but that's why I'm glad I'm free not to go to that church."

Comment by Raine on 03/14/2008 20:21:59
Randi needs to stop playing devils advocate ----- today.

We know about race, We know about religion. What we need to do now is defend against the attacks. What revrand Wright has said is PART of HIS church. it is not a part of the Obama campign.

You can be a part of a church and not agree with the entire preachers doctrine.

You can.

And Jesus... here is the other side... if people want to keep spreading the LIE that barack is Muslim, then hell... they lost the entire argument. You can't Fight both sides.

What a clusterfuck. I still think randi is playing into the idea of a swiftboating of Barack. This is not Baraks fault.

While driving to work I ended up listening to some of the Winter Soldier hearings on WBAI. During the hour, it was mostly Jeremy Scahill talking about Blackwater and how there is no prosecution of the contractors and they have carte blanche to kill while if a soldier did it he would be prosecuted. Laura Flanders is supposed to be anchoring Free Speech TV's coverage of the hearings tomorrow (look for a friend who has Dish Network).

I hate the idea that we are now forced to judge a candidate by their CHURCH... as opposed to thier RELIGION.

That is a big thing.

PLUS, as was according to articleIV, yes. I agree.

IF we are REALLY gonna make this about Barack's religion, then Bring it the Hell on.

However, this isn't even about his religion, it is about his CHURCH. Sigh.

Considering she likes all those crappy hair bands from the 80's she should not talk about someone's taste in music.

I remember in the early days of AAR when Janeane said as much as she loved Randi, she felt that Randi had terrible taste in music. Janeane's music tastes run more into the alternative/college radio mode.

The late William Sloane Coffin was part of United Church of Christ, I do believe they have a strong presence in the peace movement.

There was indeed a tornado in the ATL. We just had a report that showed they had to postpone the SEC Tournament because it rattled the Dome.
