Drawing a Line
Author: BobR    Date: 03/28/2008 12:26:12

It's been hard to escape all of the Clinton -vs- Obama hype lately. Hillary's underhanded tactics are given all of the proper outrage - repeatedly... The video of Rev. Wright is discussed ad nauseum. Everyone keeps wondering aloud if all of this will destroy the Democratic party. There certainly seem to be a fair number of Democrats that say they'll vote for McCain if their desired candidate is not the one nominated.

Oh really?... Are you sure?.... Perhaps it's time to really take a close look at McCain and what we'll be getting if he's elected this fall.

WAR: While Clinton and Obama snipe over who was against what when and who will get out sooner, McCain wants permanent bases in Iraq, and envisions us staying there for another 100 years to "get the job done" (whatever THAT means). He's the one that sang "Bomb, Bomb Iran" (badly, to the tune of the Beach Boys "Barbara Ann"), and would be likely to do so if he felt inclined. For that matter, he doesn't seem to understand the difference between Shia and Sunni muslims, recently repeating several times that Shiite Iran was helping Sunni al-Qaeda.

ECONOMICS: McCain has said himself that he really doesn't understand economics. His economic plan is to essentially do nothing. Our economy is teetering on the brink of collapse - do we really want someone in charge that doesn't understand the complexities of it? On top of this, he is on the Senate Committee on Commerce, where he is apparently in over his head and doesn't even realize it.

GOVERNMENT INTEGRITY: With corporatism becoming impossible to deny, we really need a president who will roll back the business-first/citizen-second mindset in DC. Instead, McCain seems to be rolling in the fascism like a dog rolling in something stinky he found in the woods. Most of the top positions in his campaign staff are current or former lobbyists. When lobbyists help politicians write laws and policies, who do you think will be favored? McCain also broke the very campaign finance law that he helped write and bears his name (the McCain/Feingold bill).

SCOTUS: Several of the more "liberal" justices on the Supreme Court are getting to the age where they either should retire or they will die in office. Since the president at the time will be the one nominating the replacement, we REALLY need that someone to be a bit more liberal than John McCain. That is - if we value our personal liberties, and want the little guy (us) to be protected from the big guy (government and corporations).

HEALTH: Some readers may be too young to remember Reagan. Reagan was old. He fell asleep in cabinet meetings. He couldn't remember things (or at least pretended not to). McCain is old too. He is already showing signs that he is not up for the rigors of the job, and inaugaration day is still just under a year away. Do we really want someone mentally feeble in the White House? Haven't we had enough of that for 8 years already?

BUSH - 4 MORE YEARS: Ultimately, McCain has embraced Bush and vows to continue Bush's legacy. With McCain succeeding Bush, we will get 4 more years of costly immoral military entanglements, 4 more years of economic malaise, 4 more years of corporate-controlled government, and possibly 4 more years of a confused White House controlled by the vice President.

Is it worth all that to "punish" the Democratic party for not nominating the candidate you desire? Where do you draw the line?

Thank you BobR,

For injecting a skosh reality into the debacle that has become the Democratic primary. We cannot afford in so many ways to have a President McCain. We must work together to elect a Democrat to the White House - as it is we are looking at 20 - 30 year time frame to repair the damage done by Bush/Cheney. :nervous:

Good Mornin' Everyone!

Cheers,

mfaye

Good morning, bloggers!

I have a rare morning where I am not substitute teaching or running errands. So, I thought I would wish everyone a good morning and an early good weekend

The UNN Daily Headlines are up, if you want to take a look.

BobR, I agree that either Clinton or Obama would be better than McCain. So, for those who wish to sit this one out or vote for McCain, do you want to live with the consequences of a McCain presidency - including many more dead American troops?

Condi: the USA has a birth defect regarding Race:Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said yesterday that the United States still has trouble dealing with race because of a national "birth defect" that denied black Americans the opportunities given to whites at the country's very founding.

"Black Americans were a founding population," she said. "Africans and Europeans came here and founded this country together — Europeans by choice and Africans in chains. That's not a very pretty reality of our founding."

As a result, Miss Rice told editors and reporters at The Washington Times, "descendants of slaves did not get much of a head start, and I think you continue to see some of the effects of that."

"That particular birth defect makes it hard for us to confront it, hard for us to talk about it, and hard for us to realize that it has continuing relevance for who we are today," she said.

[...]

Miss Rice declined to comment on the campaign, saying only that it was "important" that Mr. Obama "gave it for a whole host of reasons."

She has said in the past that she actually is a supporter of affirmative action like Colin Powell so this is one (and probably the only issue) that she's not down with the neo-cons on.

There is a floater of her being McCain's running mate. If she were the veep nominee, that would secure the ticket as a continuation of the Bush policies but the Republican racists would probably stay home (which would help the Democratic nominee).

On crediting me - sometimes I'd rather they just say it's from Bubba in Montana - when a bit of mine bombs, of course...

Raine, there is a note on the Brattleboro Reformer:

The Reformer Web site is experiencing technical difficulties today. Stories from March 2007 were inadvertantly posted on to the site Friday. We are working to clear up this problem as soon as possible.

So, no Rove subpoena today.

I was waiting for something like this to be put out there.

I looked for the NY Times, Reuters, and Washington Post versions of the story and found nothing. So, I went back to the link, hit the home link, and saw the note.

Glad to help.

By the way, I did wrap up work on the

Daily Headlines. There are several good articles from the Nation, American Prospect, AlterNet, and Mother Jones.

One could take that the wrong way.

you don't need to use "alleged" here because John McCain, through his campaign, has made a statement against interest in the financial papers they filed - the act itself was against the law ("illegal"), they said they did it, you don't need any more proof.

you don't need to allege that he did it because they've said that he did it.

GAH!

(I just needed somewhere to post this. Sammy did just fine, too)

There's too many sounds to display them all in the panel at the left, so we only display the most commonly used ones. If you display the pop-up window, you'll find it on the Steph Show tab:

He said that he had spoken to the campaigns. Maybe that's why Hillary changed her tune yesterday.

Oliver Stone set to make "Bush" - plans to finish movie before our pResident leaves office (voluntarily).

Borman said Weiser's script was completed before the WGA strike and was ready to shoot and that many of Stone's "Pinkville" crew jumped right into "Bush." If financing materializes quickly enough, the film could start production by April and could be in theaters for the election or the inauguration.

"I can't give you that, because the filmmaker has to hide in the work," Stone said. "Here, I'm the referee, and I want a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world? It's like Frank Capra territory on one hand, but I'll also cover the demons in his private life, his bouts with his dad and his conversion to Christianity, which explains a lot of where he is coming from. It includes his belief that God personally chose him to be president of the United States, and his coming into his own with the stunning, preemptive attack on Iraq. It will contain surprises for Bush supporters and his detractors."

Stone looked carefully at actors before setting his sights on Brolin, whose career has drawn recent traction from memorable roles in "No Country for Old Men" and "American Gangster." Brolin just began work on the Gus Van Sant-directed "Milk," playing Dan White, the San Francisco pol who gunned down Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone. While Brolin won't make a formal deal until financing is sealed, he can be ready for an April start.

"Josh is actually better looking than Bush but has the same drive and charisma that Americans identify with Bush, who has some of that old-time movie-star swagger," Stone said.
