The UAW is Filing Ethics Charges against Mitt Romney for his Auto Bailout Profiteering.
At a press conference in Toledo, Bob King, President of the United Automobile Workers, will announce that his union and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) have filed a formal complaint with the US Office of Government Ethics in Washington stating that Gov. Romney improperly hid a profit of $15.3 million to $115.0 million in Ann Romney's so-called "blind" trust.

The union chief says, "The American people have a right to know about Gov. Romney’s potential conflicts of interest, such as the profits his family made from the auto rescue,” “It’s time for Gov. Romney to disclose or divest.”
[snip]

According to ethics law expert Dan Curry who drafted the ethics complaint, Ann Romney does not have a federally-approved blind trust. An approved "blind" trust may not be used to hide a major investment which could be affected by Romney if he were to be elected President. Other groups joining the UAW and CREW include Public Citizen, the Service Employees International Union, Public Campaign, People for the American Way and The Social Equity Group.

President Obama's approved trust, for example, contains only highly-diversified mutual funds on which Presidential action can have little effect. By contrast, the auto bail-out provided a windfall of over 4,000% on one single Romney investment.

In 2009, Ann Romney partnered with her husband's key donor, billionaire Paul Singer, who secretly bought a controlling interest in Delphi Auto, the former GM auto parts division. Singer's hedge fund, Elliott Management, threatened to cut off GM's supply of steering columns unless GM and the government's TARP auto bail-out fund provided Delphi with huge payments. While the US treasury complained this was "extortion," the hedge funds received, ultimately, $12.9 billion in taxpayer subsidies.

I'll be back.

Morning, comrades.

Thanks Raine...I feel dirty now for just having read that.

Of all the right-wing tools in the world, Romney is the right-wing tooliest.

In other news, chemo wins this round. <-- dies.

I'm on the verge of breaking out my walking stick again. Some new things are keeping me up at night - haven't been sleeping well.

BTW, there's not a good term for this, but I suppose my *appreciation* of Governor Christie has increased exponentially over the last few days.

It might be politically expedient for 2016 for him to do the right things this week...but he's doing the right things without making political hay out of it in the short term.

You're still a right-wing tool, governor....but that doesn't matter this week. Go save your state. How can we help?

Dr. Maddow just mentioned people being rescued in Hoboken with their pets..."their very large pets".

We've not had a recurrence of the "Snowball" story from Katrina.....which still makes me have a little dusky eye just thinking about it.

Fuck George Bush.

In case you missed it, Romney Flipped flopped on FEMA -- Again?

"I believe that FEMA plays a key role in working with states and localities to prepare for and respond to natural disasters," Romney said in a statement supplied by his campaign Wednesday. "As president, I will ensure FEMA has the funding it needs to fulfill its mission, while directing maximum resources to the first responders who work tirelessly to help those in need, because states and localities are in the best position to get aid to the individuals and communities affected by natural disasters."

At a minimum, this is preferable to the candidate blowing off the question altogether. But the written statement from aides -- why Romney wouldn't say this out loud is unclear -- leaves key questions unanswered.

For example, why is it that Romney now believes FEMA should get "the funding it needs," but last year, he said "we cannot afford" to fully fund the agency? Other than the calendar, what's changed?

After watching video of him, I truly believe he was concerned about his state, and Yes, I do give him credit.

Last night I wrote:
When I was growing up, I was taught to not lie.

When I did lie, my parents did not reward me. They told me my actions would have consequences.

When you go to the booth, do not reward a liar. Send a message to Mitt Romney that lies have consequences by not voting for him.

Liars should not be rewarded.
After some back and forth another friend wrote one of the most insightful, simple and precise things I have seen:
People don't vote for liars to reward them. They do it because they trust the liar more than they trust themselves.

I can't stop thinking about this statement.

I love Bobber especially when he writes things like this:

Saying that "all politicians lie" is like saying going 56 in a 55 is the same as going 156, that slapping someone in the face is the same as beating them to a pulp, that going $10 over your limit on your credit card is the same as going $1000 over. Most rational people know better. False equivalency is a poor substitute for a rational argument.

Oho....never mind Scott Brown....Romney has his fingers in the Compounding Pharmacy mess, too.

“In October 2004, the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, a state regulatory agency reporting to Gov. Romney, offered to let NECC enter into a consent agreement that would have acknowledged professional misconduct by NECC warranting disciplinary action, a public reprimand and three years probation.

But in a letter dated Nov. 11, 2004, Paul Cirel, an attorney for NECC, argued that such disciplinary action would be “potentially fatal” to NECC’s business. In a footnote, he asserted, “Once disclosed, the reprimand will surely result in investigations/inquiries/investigations in those other jurisdictions. Regardless of the derivative actions taken, the attendant legal and administrative costs will be devastating.”

The letter added that instead of having the state monitor the company, NECC would be willing to “bear the burden of cost and monitoring and reporting compliance” in exchange for a non-disciplinary resolution.

The Board of Registration subsequently dropped the reprimand. Meanwhile, in 2005, NECC was the subject of another complaint. Nevertheless, the Board of Registration went forward with a Consent Agreement that was, according to Oliver, “even more advantageous to the company than was requested by NECC.”

I know it helps you cope with the general suck that is cancer. Your struggle with chemo's side effect remind me how lucky my mom was with hers; she was randomized into a double blind for a new type of chemo for breast cancer. The worst she had was some mild neuropathy and peeling in her feet. Oh and that mild heart attack a couple of years out, but besides that nuttin.

David Simon on Mitt's taxes.

At points, as a function of citizenship itself, I feel obliged to contemplate something larger than myself, something that might benefit others more than me, something that might require collective sacrifice of a kind associated with great nations and great societies. And if my vote results in a higher tax rate for myself and others in my income bracket, that’s certainly understandable given the current level of societal need and the fact that American tax rates are at their lowest ebb in modern times.

More from David Simon on Mitt Romney

This man is a lout. A shameless lout, who, among the supposed privacy of close supporters, reveals that he can conceive of no idea larger or more profound than self-interest. As he believes first and foremost in Mitt Romney and his ambitions, he can’t conceive that others can conjure anything larger than themselves or their possible personal gain. Here and now, he is laid bare by his own cynical critique of others who will not follow him in selfishness. It is not that Mr. Romney is merely unfit to serve us as president. Based on this latest revelation, it may go much deeper. If he believes what he told that group in private, he may well be unfit to serve us as a fellow citizen.

In the years following our independence, the federal government, organized under the Articles of Confederation, had virtually no power – it couldn't raise taxes to fund federal activities and it couldn't compel the states to do anything they didn't approve.

The US didn't have a Federal government until the Constitution was ratified. This is freshman history stuff. Seriously.

Mmmm...that was the problem with the Articles of Confederation. There was no central authority, and I think the states realized that this made them vulnerable to external factors. (War, trade, and maybe even natural disasters.) Hence the Constitutional Convention to bash out a central power structure.

its a religious thing - a percentage of that 57% would probably tell you that anything paranormal is demon related

I just wrote this with people like our Livin and my cousin (who is online for the first time since the storm) in mind:

To my (and in many cases, OUR) friends and family that are finding themselves coming back online and are for the first time seeing images of what happened:

Please go as slow as you can. Do not overwhelm yourselves. Be kind to yourself and when it is too much to see, walking away is ok. We love you and we will be there for you emotionally. (((hug)))

My cousin is going through a second shock of seeing how devastating this has been. Her recent posts are indicating that. IT could be a strange flashback or some type of identification, but I can't help but thinking about getting home the night of 9/11 and seeing those images on TV and sitting there crying in a state of total shock at what I was seeing after being in the city that day.

You are so much nicer than I am, Mala. I would say it is a stupid thing since ghost and demons don't exist

Speaking of Sandy, my co-worker, Ethel is from a town on the Jersey shore. She was showing me a picture that relatives had sent her. Pretty much flattened. All the stuff right on the shore line is a tangle of debris.
