The last round of primaries had the effect of crowning Barack Obama the Democratic party nominee. The Clinton camp (and her supporters) are trying against all reality (forget odds) to overcome his lead with only a small handful of primaries left. Her only hope at this point is to convince most of the superdelegates to switch to her side.

To do this she must convince them that Barack Obama cannot beat McCain; she must convince them that only she can. She can cite polls, she can use racist language, she can evoke shadowy issues hiding under the bed that could turn ugly when the harsh spotlight is finally shone beneath the dust ruffle. What she CAN'T do, however, is change the reality of the popular vote.

In the race for the Democratic party nomination, everyone has been focusing on the magic number of delegates. The Clinton campaign has also tried to bring the popular vote into the equation citing Michigan (where Obama was not on the ballot) and FL. After several months of watching the primary returns, one thing that struck me is the number of people voting in the Democratic primaries compared to those voting in the Republican primaries. So I decided to tally them up.

The results - too big to post in their entirety on this blog page - can be found HERE.

Take a look at the bottom line for the Primary states:
McCain: 8.7 million votes
Obama: 15.6 million votes

The Caucus states show a similar pattern, although I'm not sure if they calculate those differently between the two parties. The bottom line is: nearly twice as many people have voted in this primary for Obama as have voted for McCain, despite McCain being the far-ahead front runner in the Republican race, and Obama essentially splitting the votes with Clinton in the Democratic race.

Making the assumption that EVERYONE that voted for Clinton stayed home for the General, and at the EVERYONE that voted for McCain voted in the General, Obama would win in a landslide.

That's not a very realistic assumption of course. There are a lot of variables here:
  • The majority of Clinton supporters would likely end up voting for Obama

  • A certain small minority of Clinton supporters would vote for McCain as a protest

  • A certain small minority of Clinton supporters would vote for a 3rd party candidate as a protest

  • A certain small minority of Clinton supporters wouldn't vote at all as a protest

  • Republicans that voted in the Democratic primaries would vote for McCain in the General

  • There is a sizeable chunk of independents and middle-of-the-roaders that didn't vote in the primaries that would vote in the General, but realistically, they would approximately split the vote.

The bottom line is: None of those things are going to erase the 7-8 million vote difference between McCain and Obama. The polls may say otherwise, but the only poll that matters is the one taken on Nov 04. Of course - the other side is also true as well, that Clinton could just as easily win it for the same reasons. However, she is not ahead in the delegate count, and is not likely to get ahead.

The numbers paint a very convincing portrait, one of Barack Obama being sworn into the Office of the Presidency on Jan 20, 2009.

good morning!

I like playing with the numbers as much as the next geek, so I enjoyed your post, but numbers can be made to say just about anything - we've seen it before, we'll see it again. It's actually kind of amusing the gymnastics Clinton supporters have been doing to make the numbers look good for them...

I think Hillary needs a reality check. Her argument that she is the only one who can beat McCain is just wrong, and it contradicts what she herself admitted at the ABC "debate" (loathe as I am to mention it). When asked whether Obama could win in November, Senator Clinton replied (grudgingly) "Yes. Yes. Yes."

She has lost the primary battle based on rules she accepted, and previously liked, when they seemed to favor her. I remember the beginning of the race when her campaign insisted it was "all about the delegates".

She has alienated a lot of the democratic base. I voted for her twice as my Senator, I gave money to her first Senatorial campaign. I enjoyed meeting with her, and on balance I still have a lot of respect for her. But she wrote me off time and again as too young, naive, well-educated, elite, blah blah blah.

Obama is my candidate -- presumptively our candidate, and Hillary needs to stop doing everything she can to kneecap him. Seriously.

Scoopster - I saw the Edwards interview this morning. The conclusion of the Kos article makes sense - using some duduction:

1. John Edwards said that he voted for a different Dem candidate than Elizabeth

2. Elizabeth Edwards has gone on the record supporting Clinton's healthcare plan, and she has attended Clinton rallies

3. So - iff Elizabeth Edward voted for Clinton, then John voted for Obama

4. Edwards, this morning, said he would endorse who he voted for

Thus - Edwards will endorse Obama. But iff Elizabeth voted for Clinton.

My head hurts.

I was insulted with Hillary's comments... but I am over it... Barack is the nominee... I am going to post something I posted last night:

The two endorsements bring Clinton's advantage over Obama among superdelegates down to seven, according to CNN's estimate; Clinton has the backing of 267 superdelegates, while Obama has 250.

Since Tuesday's primaries, Obama has gained six superdelegates while Clinton has picked up one. But Clinton also lost a superdelegate Wednesday — DNC member Jennifer McClellan switched her support to Obama — for a net gain of zero.

From CNN...

OK. So, hillary is now just looking foolish. Barack Obama can unite us, despite these divisionary statements. Bill Clinton didn't win the election by winning the White vote, it should be noted so whatever...

In the mean time McCain is vowing to Pass LAws that have already been passed...

McCain also said he would crack down on human trafficking by creating a inter-agency task force to strengthen cooperation between federal, state and local law enforcement.

McCain said he would to work to change the economic incentives underpinning trafficking as well as doing more to aid the victims of "this evil form of 21st-century slavery."

First, HE voted against this sort of thing when we found out a few of his former buddies went to the Marianna Islands (Tom Delay, anyone)

From The DOJ: (More at the link)

Prosecution

The United States Government continued its efforts to improve anti-trafficking law enforcement efforts over the reporting period. The United States prohibits all forms of trafficking in persons through criminal statutes created or strengthened by the 2000 Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA), which prescribes penalties of up to 20 years' imprisonment-penalties that are sufficiently stringent and commensurate with those for other grave crimes. In FY 2006, the Department of Justice's (DOJ) Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorneys' Offices initiated 168 investigations, charged 111 individuals, and obtained 98 convictions (including in cases initiated in previous fiscal years). Under the TVPA, traffickers can be sentenced to up to 20 years' imprisonment. The average sentence imposed for trafficking crimes in FY 2005 was 8.5 years (including defendants convicted in other fiscal years). The Federal Bureau of Investigation and DOJ Criminal Division continued to combat the exploitation of children in prostitution in the United States through the Innocence Lost National Initiative; in FY 2006, this Initiative resulted in 103 open investigations, 157 arrests, 76 indictments, and 43 convictions.

State and local governments also made significant law enforcement efforts against trafficking in persons. By the end of 2006, 27 states had passed criminal anti-trafficking legislation. DOJ and Health and Human Services (HHS) continue to increase the number of anti-trafficking task forces, coalitions, and outreach efforts across the United States. DOJ funded 42 task forces at the end of FY 2006, up from 32 in FY 2005. These task forces bring together state, local, and federal law enforcement with partners from NGOs.

In 2006, the Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division (WHD) began developing resources to help investigators identify potential trafficking issues and began introducing trafficking issues into its investigator training curriculum. During the past year, WHD staff participated in over 30 local, multi-agency task forces on trafficking.

This is what the Media needs to be focusing on. instead of what Hillary is doing.

And These are the things we need to keep an eye out for. This was not a senior moment... this is a man that does not know what he is talking about.

Perhaps he could promise to have this law ENFORCED... but he won't... he voted agaisnt strengthening this in 2006, and he will continue to water it down if he is elected.

Today's pull your heartstring story....

Did anyone hear the story yesterday about the oldest league bowler passing away?

I don't have the obit that I read in the AJC, only This AP article...

Well in today's "peach Buzz" section of the paper (the peach Buss is like a little like "page 6" kinds local gossip etc...) I Read this...

At 104, she’s grieving for bowling beau

As soon as we received word of Bill Hargrove’s passing Thursday at Buzz Central, we immediately picked up the phone and rang Rachel Rosen Lehmann, our favorite 104-year-old reader.

As you’ll no doubt recall, Lehmann first called us back in March 2005, after reading about bowler Bill “Tiger” Hargrove, then 102, who had just been featured in the AJC Sports section. Lehmann wanted his digits. We happily obliged. The two ended up getting on so well, Hargrove showed up at the longtime Atlanta Opera volunteer’s 102nd birthday party in June of that year with three long-stemmed red roses. Sporting a jacket and tie, Hargrove gave her a hug and purred in her ear: “I came in here looking for an old lady but I couldn’t find one.”

We took copious notes and the pair ended up on the front page much to the delight of readers.

“Oh, Bill, what a darling sweet man,” Lehmann reflected Thursday. “He was a real Southern gentleman. He would always call me ‘Rachel darlin’ ’ in that accent of his. It was the cutest thing.”

Lehmann told us the two met up from time to time when they could arrange transportation but mostly kept up via phone calls.

Said Lehmann: “He would tell me, ‘When I go to bed at night, I see you in my dreams.’ How can you top that? They aren’t making gentlemen like that anymore.”

Regrettably, Lehmann never had a chance to take Hargrove to her beloved Atlanta Opera. But she did attend his 106th birthday party last year.

“I brought him a big bottle of wine!” Lehmann recalled with a wicked laugh. “I mean, at our age, why not? We always had so much fun together. I just wish we could have started a little earlier. But I’m so happy I got to meet him. And so handsome!”

In tribute to her bowling beau, the Zaban Tower retirement community songbird plans to attend Hargrove’s memorial service Saturday at 2 p.m. at Atlanta’s Grace United Methodist Church.

With three long-stemmed red roses in hand.

This is telling... From Rassmussen Reports™:

Rasmussen Reports has been tracking the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination daily for nineteen months… since November 2006. For the last few months, the most remarkable feature of the race has been its consistency and stability. Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are both running historic campaigns and both have captured the votes and hearts of distinct and important constituencies within the Democratic Party. Obama has won Primaries in states where the demographics favor his campaign and Clinton has won in the states that favor her campaign.

However, while Senator Clinton has remained close and competitive in every meaningful measure, she is a close second and the race is over. It has become clear that Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee.

[...]

With this in mind, Rasmussen Reports will soon end our daily tracking of the Democratic race and focus exclusively on the general election competition between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama. Barring something totally unforeseen, that is the choice American voters will have before them in November.

The only days I've gone over there over the past month were "non-Clay" days. Otherwise - bleck!

It seems, however, that many enjoy engaging the hecklers, and as such, they keep it up. :(

Quote by Raine:

Would you agree that Richardson is in a stronger position for having made his endorsement when he did - and taking the crap for it? True, it takes guts - personally, I'm tired of politicians (i.e. NO GUTS) - and as for friends in D.C. please see the "dog" cliche.

I was a big Edwards fan - but he's lost me over the last three months.

I think he could be kingmaker after all.

We were all hoping for him to do so by an endorsement for the popular vote...

But, I am thinking he may very well be kingmaker, the SD count os so damn close... I think he will endorse to be the man who makes it finally happen.

I love him, and I have been waiting trying to figure out wth he is doing sitting on his hands... but this is now about the SD's...

I heard that as well, and thought I could live with that...

But her positions as of late have made me VERY nervous. Not to mention her votes in the senate. She DID vote for Roberts and Alito.

I'm a big fan of moderate Justices. Believe it or not, I'm not totally anti-Roberts. Alito, Scalia, Thomas - NO WAY! Ginsberg, Breyer - only necessary to counteract those three. Stevens and Souter - my kind of Justices (Kennedy is just too full of himself as the split now, so he's of little use).

Clinton would be a great replacement for Stevens or Souter.

As the counter to the Winger wacko three, not so much (so not a good replacement for Ginsberg or Breyer).

But I'm wary to support a Supreme Court nomination - Hillary is a politician. She hasn't focused on straight legal analysis in years and years. Her strengths lie in being a policy wonk, and that's where we should use her. just imho.

I don't really think that Roberts and Alito are moderate at all. I agree about moderate SCOTUS justices.

It is amazing to me that Souter and O'Connor were nominated by Bush 1 & RayGun... Shows how far right an partisan this has become.

Maybe after *ush is out of office, we will see a transformation of those 2, the way we did with O'connor.

I am REALLY worried about the SCOTUS for this election, at the least 2 people are WAITING to step down..

The right has basically dominated political discourse in this country since Ray-Gun's been President and the Democratic Party by saying they can't be seen as "too left" has contributed to the problem with the DLC and its ilk. Granted, a persons' concept of who is "moderate" or "extreme" depends on where they personally stand on the political spectrum. However, "corporatist"? There is a difference between overruling the outcome of Roe (choice) and questioning the legal reasoning of it (one of my problems with O'Connor - see below - i.e. Casey). There is no Right to Choose in the Constitution - similarly, there is no Right to Privacy (that was born out of the Third Amendment - the only time that one was ever pertinent).

I really don't believe (and I may be wrong!) that Roberts was questioning the outcome of Roe, rather, its legal foundation. And there is none.

Should there be a Right to Privacy - YES! Should there be a Right to Choose - YES! That's one of the many problems with our Constitution. It irks me that so many are so in love with the U.S. Constitution. It's a dead document. In addition, the drafters got SO MUCH WRONG. Also, they contemplated regular Constitutional Conventions in the future to amend it - knowing that times would render it less useful.

Roberts was simply applying the U.S. Constitution to Title X (which I also hate). Pure legal analysis - not partisan.

It's the Altios, Scalias, Thomas' and O'Connors who are presented "A" then jump to the political decision of "Z" and make up "B" to "Y" to justify it. Roberts isn't that.

Hey Shane-O,

I can appreciate what you said above. I agree on your comment regarding person's viewpoint on who is 'moderate'/liberal based on their own bias/viewpoint.

A true definition of corporatist is something that is lacking. For the purposes of my attributing it to Roberts, I can clarify it a little bit better. I believe, that Roberts is in the sector/segment of society that finds the structure & 'corporate concept' to be the guiding principle for a social hierarchy/class system. Call it a class system based on the pyramid structure of a general corporation. Where the Board members are the 'owners' and the CEO is the King. Some people buy into the idea that a corporation is efficient and infallible in its design and believe the world should be run by that concept. I believe Mr. Roberts is in that camp.

I have no problem with capitalism, unless its unregulated, that is a recipe for disaster. I actually believe the best ruling system/economic system is found in northern Europe, most specifically Scandinavian countries. They have a form of democratic socialism, where there is no impediment on how much a person can earn (like a capitalist structure), yet because of the political system, monopolies are mostly non-existent, the wealth of the society is not a pyramid or an hour glass, it is a we society, not a me society. I honestly believe that type of culture will prevail unlike our consumer driven/consumption driven society. If you know of Bernie Sanders (I-VT), put me in his corner.

No one who completely believes in the 'free market' can point to a single society or nation that has run both the economic & political systems sucessfully using only that notion/concept. In all honesty, call me a Thom Hartmann/David Sirota disciple, but I don't even believe in the notion of a 'free market'. Ancient Egypt had 'taxes'....to find any true semblance of a 'free market' you would have to go back in time to after the isolated tribal - hunter/gatherer days, when societies transitioned to trading, etc.

In regard to the endorsement, yeah, that's true. However his actions since taking the bench speak volumes, he voted in favor of Exxon Mobil not fulfilling their obligations to pay the punitive damages/enforce them to cleanup the destruction from the Valdez disaster. And that's only one, there are several other decisions that would suggest he's no moderate.

It could be argued that China is now a communist (politically) free market/capitalist society. I recommend reading Ravi Batra & David Cay Johnston.

Put it this way...I love democracy as a political system, wouldn't want anything other than that (well maybe something a little closer to British Parliamentary system). I love capitalism, as long as its regulated & monopolies are prohibited. I believe the 'free market' is a bag of magic beans that way, way too many people buy without questioning its consequences.

I think that maybe we could work on impeaching Scalia and Thomas for violating judicial ethics by not recusing themselves by voting in Bush v. Gore even though both of them had relatives in the Bush camp. Scalia's son was working with the Bush legal team while Thomas' wife was involved in the Bush transition team picking out people for Chimpy's cabinet.

And Scalia voting on the Cheney case after going on a fishing trip with him indicates that Scalia is a repeat offender in violating judicial ethics.

RWH - I think we agree on more than we might disagree. Amen to the content of your comment, below.

Please allow me to buttress your remarks re: democratic socialism and regulation.

I too prefer the democratic socialist model - and, when you speak of corporatism, perhaps the true problem is the fact that in the U.S. we (the government) have (has) shifted nearly all the risk (the alleged check against corporate malfeasance - as opposed to regulation) away from corporations (through deregulation and via bail outs) and placed the cost firmly on the citizens.

Your points are well taken re: Roberts and his capitalistic tendencies. Does that alone make him a Winger, arguable - but possible.

Well tbh I look at it this way.. Scalia is 72 years old right now. If we started hearings that would eventually lead to impeachment on January 21 2009, theoretically he could be DEAD by the time anything actually happened. I think we should probably just leave him be at this point, and hope he would go away naturally during a Democratic presidency. That would at least give us some leverage against the younger Roberts-Alito-Thomas axis.

Also, rather than trying to deal with Thomas I think we should focus more on replacements for Stevens and Ginsburg, and possibly Kennedy, during what will hopefully be an Obama Administration. Shoring up these justices with solidly progressive replacements is more important than going after Thomas, because what if we lose the presidency again and a Repub does get the chance to move the court towards 7-2..

Hi RWH. It looks like Jonathan Frakes should have just kept his directing ventures with the Star Trek franchise.

Although I am a little nervous about that next movie. Berman and Company have really run Trek into the ground.

Hey living, I agree. I just hope that Abrams doesn't turn the next movie into Star Wars meets Star Trek. I'm all for spicing it up, but don't kill the premise/formula/canon

Comment by wickedpam on 05/09/2008 19:12:10

I knew from the first commercial it wasn't going to be any good. They took it out of the "real" racing arena and made it all fantastical and futuristic. THey should have left it alone.

The biggest problem with Enterprise was the fact that the producers were not fans of the Original Series and were in some ways messing with canon. Why did they have a Borg episode so early which even contradicted Next Generation when it was supposed to be Q zapping the Enterprise into deep space that first brought the Federation in contact with the Borg.

Although it is funny that Shatner is pissed as though he could play a Kirk who is supposed to be younger than he was in the Original Series.

I'm actually looking forward to the next Trek movie, don't think I've seen one since Shatner handed the torch to Stewart.

Yeah, they tanked the franchise with Enterprise...could have been so much better than what it was. Yeah Shatner is getting kind of ridiculous with the next movie. His character on Boston Legal definitely has a life of its own. He's perfect for that role.

I think we can create a link pace on the side of the blog and call it Bushisms.

Most important would be the date the clip was uttered - especially if it a somewhat obscure one. Pretty much every idiotic statement by *resident sh*it-for-brains is available at whitehouse.gov - dates make them SO much easier to find. Thanks!

FYI - I will create a separate page for the Bushisms, and provide an upload link to anyone that wants to add a favorite (the WAV or MP3 has to be cached to your PC to upload it).

If there are any that would work as AudiCons, then Shane-O (or I) can set that up as well. I'd rather not clutter up the AudiCon screen with sounds that aren't really going to be used as such...
