In 1972, when I was just 5, Kenner came out with the greatest doll - The Blythe Doll. She, however, was so different from the traditional baby dolls or fashion doll (i.e.Barbie) that there was very little interest in this unique creation.

This is the Australian ad but you get that she was hip, cool, funky, so misunderstood for her time and why she was only produced for 1 year.

I wanted this doll. Sadly having a parent who has no love for the geeky and out of the normal what I got was a Barbie. Sure Barbie was fun, she had pretty clothes, nice house, a car, a camper and many careers even back in the '70's. That is until I chewed off her feet (yes I'm admitting this freely, I also chewed on pencils - not sure why) and none of her shoes stayed on, well the boots did but that was it. Anyway.

Blythe is my toy that got away. I've seen that they are making new ones but I've yet to find one. She is still elusive.

So I"m going to throw us into the toy ditch - what toy did you want but never lay your hands on?

Morning

Sorry for throwing us into the toy ditch, I know there are probably more important things to talk about but its Friday and we need a break from the serious.

I still have my die-cast Millenium Falcon, but we never did get that Death Star with the working trash compactor. My brother and I used to put our action figures in a box and crush them in the big vice in Pop's workshop...

My brother and I grew up during the video game boom, and as such we successively owned the original Atari CES, the 2600 and the 7800. However my mother refused to buy us the original Nintendo system because it came with.. a gun controller!

So just before starting high school I saved up my allowances and money I earned working in the kitchen at my mom's workplace and bought one myself, and played it on an old small black & white TV. I managed to keep it a secret for almost two months - and I didn't use the gun! Duck Hunt was a boring game to me I was more into the long-play stuff (Metroid), puzzle games (Tetris & Dr. Mario) and of course, RPGs (Zelda, Final Fantasy, and this excellent ol' game called StarTropics). When she found out she was kinda pissed, but hey I bought it for myself so what could she do?! Not long after that she got us the new Super NES (it didn't come with a gun) and the next year bought a computer. After that it was all downhill.

BTW.. do you know how flippin' HARD Dr. Mario is in black & white?!

You know, between all the outrage over a POW coming home (never thought I'd write that), the shootings and stabbings, I'm thinking of putting in a request to transfer species. Anyone got a form to change my legal status to "cat"?

I had an Intellivision (still in the attic somewhere with a couple games). It was cheaper then the Atari that I wanted but it was a video game so who was I to complain at the time.

Only get my SNES when I needed a stress reliever to deal with idiot cable customers. Its amazing how satisfying it is to have Yoshi jump on stuff.

I had a Creepy Crawler maker. Since this was the 60s it was a heating element that brought the plastic stuff the make the Creepy Crawlers to almost a boil. Good times!

I am thinking of transferring species and planets, but Mars is a bit barren. Still, being a telepathic, shape-shifting superpowered alien would have a few advantages.

Let us remember this day 70 years ago, when the Allies invaded Normandy and started the beginning of the end of the Third Reich. To those who served, living or dead, thank you for your service.

From ABC News:

Obama Honors Veterans in D-Day 70th Anniversary Ceremonies.

You're going to want to listen to BBC Witness today if you can. Broadcasts from 6 June 1944. (Feather knocks Trisec over).

Good afternoon! MAla your blog jogged a memory for me. It's kinda sad.

I had a blythe doll. I loved that thing. It was incredibly cool.

and then my father had a huge fight with my mother, got mad a t me for crying and asking them to stop, he threw my doll down the stirs and it broke. I honestly had forgotten that until today. Stupid parents arguing.

although looking at the prices for the new ones we may have to settle for the LIttlest Pet Shop versions, but their eyes don't change.

some of those are a little pricey - even more so if you want an original from '72

A little late to the party here...

When I was a kid I wanted a GI Joe. My oldest brother got a GI Joe with the jet fighter. My next older brother got the GI Joe with Kung-fu grip.

I got a "Combat Charlie". It was a cheap knock-off.

This pattern repeated itself every Christmas. I was always resentful about that.
