I don’t think anyone disputes that hideous instances of sexism have been stirred up in this campaign. Nor does anyone dispute that Ms. Clinton is entitled to address it, which she has done very deftly at times. The question is whether she’s entitled to reduce her entire failed campaign to sexism—which has the practical effect of splitting women into those-who-are-angry-about-sexism, and those who what? Think it’s acceptable? There’s one other practical effect that warrants mentioning, and that is that it reduces a complex, brilliant, and talented candidate to a big whomping cliché. My friend Susannah writes: “I find it increasingly unbearable to watch Hillary. It feels like she has become the archetype I find most painful to see in women—a high-maintenance, delusional, and "difficult" woman who feels entitled to do whatever she likes. ... Meanwhile, Obama is forced to tiptoe around essentially just humoring her. There is a pathetic "Yes, dear" quality to the way he is forced to react to her these days.”
This mirrors a sense I’ve had that we might have finally crossed the Hirshman line. Linda Hirshman argued persuasively that all powerful, ambitious women are at some point dismissed as “hysterical” or “insane.” Too true. The problem now is that when Clinton behaves irrationally, we can’t call her out for it because it would be sexist. If we can't call irrational behavior irrational because the character in question is a woman, then it’s a short hop from here to a Tennessee Williams play ...
STOCKTON, Calif. -- Republican John McCain on Thursday rejected endorsements from two influential but controversial televangelists, saying there is no place for their incendiary criticisms of other faiths.
McCain rejected the months-old endorsement of Texas preacher John Hagee after an audio recording surfaced in which the preacher said God sent Adolf Hitler to help Jews reach the promised land. McCain called the comment "crazy and unacceptable."
He later repudiated the support of Rod Parsley, an Ohio preacher who has sharply criticized Islam and called the religion inherently violent.
McCain issued a statement Thursday afternoon announcing his decision about Hagee.
"Obviously, I find these remarks and others deeply offensive and indefensible, and I repudiate them. I did not know of them before Reverend Hagee's endorsement, and I feel I must reject his endorsement as well," he said.
Later, in Stockton, he told reporters: "I just think that the statement is crazy and unacceptable."

Ahh cool.. I'm mainly stuck in MMO Land (Final Fantasy Online only tho.. i can't stand WoW) and occasionally I'll break out something from my classic collection - Doom2, Quake, Max Payne.. Been looking for something new to try out now tho, to see how hard I can push the new machine!

First, as a stickler for all things theatre........... the "famous" line from Streetcar was spoken by Blanche: "I've always depended on the kindness of strangers" [Fade to Black]. The other line may well have been said, but it ain't the famous one!
Second: Great post Faye, and I agree wholeheartedly that Geraldine is now an odious person who I have lost all respect for.

Morning.
Great post Roomie....I agree. Last night, I was thinking about that very thing. There have been examples of sexism regarding Hillary, absolutely! And, some of them have been downright disgusting. But, there are also plenty of people voting for her "because she's a woman."
Her campaign failed for several reasons. Sexism isn't even in the Top 5, in :star:'s humble opinion.

Velveeta,
I defer to you in all things theater, but I was referring to Stephanie's short acting career at the Edinburgh Theatre Festival (Steph played the nurse) with the final line of the play "Blanche, it's time to go." (Substitute Hillary for Blanche and I think we have a great line here.)

I do/did too....I probably shouldn't spread the rumors if I can't verify their truth. But, for me, now that I've heard it....just tainted him.

Ahh...Well, I've always looked at it this way. Tom Cruise may be clinically insane and a hateful man...but i can enjoy him on the TeeVee everytime he's on.
