Georgia was stolen. AKA: you can't be a hero if your party is not heroic.
Author: Raine    Date: 07/31/2008 09:30:22

I am not kidding here. If you are on a team that does great things, then yes! celebrate! Be a cheerleader! But you can't be the hero of a party that does unheroic things. That is not how sports are played... And politics - they are one and the same, as some in the media have said. The problem is: the results of politics are FAR more critical. So - let's begin....

Let's talk about Heroes; let's talk about politics.
Let's talk about how the GOP treats our heroes for a moment. For just a brief moment, let's talk about Max Cleland. In case you did not know, he is a Vietnam vet...He is the honorable and former Senator from the state of Georgia. He did not win re-election and Saxby Chambiss assumed his seat. Basically, he was *swifboated*. The following ad is largely attributed to his *failure* to win his election campaign:

This was the ad that his opponent, Saxby Chambliss ran a few weeks before the election. People keep saying that this was the ad that did him in... I do not agree. Not anymore. This election was stolen. Max--- Mr. Cleland... was swiftboated before the term even existed. No kidding.

We are now finding out that what was a bit suspicious to many Georgians (as well as Thom Hartmann, Greg Palast, and Bev Harris... to name a few) is pretty damn true. Republicans stole that election. Strong charges, I know...

From the Populist in 2003:
Opinion polls in Georgia on the eve of the 2002 general election showed Democratic incumbent Gov. Roy Barnes leading by 9-11 points and Sen. Max Cleland ahead of his Republican challenger by 2-5 points, so it was a shock on election night when the returns showed Barnes losing to Republican Sonny Perdue, 46 to 51 percent, a swing of as much as 16 points from the last opinion polls, and Cleland losing to Saxby Chambliss by 46 to 53 percent, a last-minute swing of 9-12 points. Pundits credited a surge of "angry white men" punishing Barnes for removing the Confederate symbol from the state flag, but the London Independent noted in a special investigative report on Oct. 14 that a demographic breakdown published by the Georgia Secretary of State showed no such surge of white men; the only subgroup showing a modest increase in turnout was black women.

There were also big, puzzling swings in different parts of the state, the Independent noted. In 58 counties, the vote was broadly in line with the primary election. In 27 counties in Republican-dominated north Georgia, however, Cleland unaccountably scored 14 points higher than he had in the primaries. And in 74 counties in the Democrat south, Saxby Chambliss garnered a whopping 22 points more for the Republicans than the party as a whole had won less than three months earlier.

The big difference was that in November 2002 Georgia was the first state in the country to conduct an election entirely with touchscreen voting machines, after lavishing $54 million on a new system that promised to deliver the most secure, most up-to-date, most voter-friendly election in the nation's history. The machines, however, were found to be poorly programmed, full of security holes and prone to tampering. With thousands of similar machines from different companies being introduced at high speed across the country, Andrew Gumbel wrote in the Independent, "computer voting may, in fact, be US democracy's own 21st-century nightmare."

The past fews days have opened up a serious story going on down here in Georgia... it seems as tho the '02 elections REALLY were stolen. A few mentions have been made on our Message Board, but This Story blew me way. Seems as tho the Secretary of State at the time (the same Secretary of State bolded above) knew what was going on.
Georgia Secretary of State Cathy Cox’s office faxed documents to the then-president of Diebold Election Systems Bob Urosevich listing a series of issues that occurred shortly before the November 2002 election.

Documents provided to RAW STORY by a whistleblower close to Cox’s office show that one of the key problems Georgia officials were trying to resolve was related to an unauthorized patch installed on machines prior to the election.

In one document, Cox’s office asked Urosevich for confirmation that a “0808 patch was applied to all systems; confirmation that the patch was not grounds for requiring the system to be recertified at national and state level; as well as verifiable analysis of the overall impact of the patch to the voting system”
there is more at the link, but - in case you are wondering about that patch: it exists. Bev Harris at Black Box Voting has it. That patch exists, and it isn't some urban myth. It was used in Fulton and Dekalb Counties, 2 HEAVILY Democratic areas in Georgia. That was it, those 2 counties. the heaviest Democratic counties in the state.

Back to Max... Mr. Cleland --- Please keep in mind that Mr. Cleland is not just a Vet... he is a REAL hero. the following is from a man who served with him...
The 2nd of the 12th Cavalry was engaged in a combat operation at the time of this incident. Max Cleland was with the Battalion Forward Command Post in heavy combat involving the attack of the 1st Cavalry Division up the valley to relieve the Marines who were besieged and surrounded at the Khe Shan Firebase. The whole surrounding area was an active combat zone (some might call the entire country of Vietnam a combat zone). (Is Iraq a combat zone?) Max, the Battalion Signal Officer, was engaged in a combat mission I personally ordered to increase the effectiveness of communications between the battalion combat forward and rear support elements: e.g. Erect a radio relay antenna on a mountain top. By the way, at one point the battalion rear elements came under enemy artillery fire so everyone was in harms way.

As they were getting off the helicopter, Max saw the grenade on the ground and he instinctively went for it. Soldiers in combat don't leave grenades lying around on the ground. Later, in the hospital, he said he thought it was his own but I doubt the concept of "ownership" went through his mind in the split seconds involved in reaching for the grenade. Nearly two decades later another soldier came forward and admitted it was actually his grenade. Does ownership of the grenade really matter? It does not.

Mr. Cleland lost both legs and his arm. In 2002, he lost his senate seat -- I will say again--- he did not lose -- it was stolen, This is a story about how Republicans treat Vets. This is a story about how Saxby Chambliss, as a representative of the Republican party treats our veterans, and our civil servants. This is how they treat our TRUE heroes. This is a story of power and control and the rest be damned.--- according to the GOP --- Saxby questoned Mr. Cleland's service. Did you know that Saxby NEVER SERVED? The dude isn't even from Georgia... Check THIS out...
John McCain of Arizona said of one ad, "It's worse than disgraceful, it's reprehensible;" Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska said the ads were "beyond offensive to me."
Good to know you care McCain.

Max Cleland did not lose because of a political ad. I propose the media would like you to believe that. To this day... more than 6 years later, they would like you to believe that an ad can make people swing like that...(go back, take a look at those numbers) People are not stupid. Max Cleland didn't lose... his seat in the senate was stolen. The GOP STOLE from a War Hero. THAT is how they treat Vets. They steal from them, and you wonder why John McCain didn't vote for the GI bill. He doesn't consider himself a vet anymore.. He just uses his status as a political toy to dangle to people who think this makes him a hero. He is using those very patriotic Americans. In reality, he has become a Karl Rove Republican, just like Saxby (who, actually started out that way from the gate, thanks to the *patch* and Diebold. Oh btw - he is up for re-election...)

We MUST be vigilant becuase Georgia '02 was a test run. A "beta theft" as it were... Ohio in '04 further pushed the ultimate plan along. We know how they treated another vet (John Kerry) in that election. It would be funny if it wasn't so consequential that John McCain wants his service to not be questioned... he only wants us all to honor it... Well, I don't. I just don't. I respect his service... but I do not honour it. Not when the republicans - his fellow party members - treated Max Cleland the way that they did, not when I know they stole that election. Honorable people don't do that. Honorable people don't treat people that way. And John McCain is not being honorable.

John McCain never talks about what happened to his fellow Vietnam vet, Max Cleland, because John KNOWS that his party will try AGAIN to steal the election.

What he doesn't know is that if we, collectilvely, get out the vote in the massive numbers that we are seeing with the support of the Obama campain no Republican can ever steal our votes again. That is the greatest gift we can give to a man that gave 3 limbs for our country. It is time to do something really heroic; it is time to vote for our true heroes, the ones who truly sacrificed for all of us. It doesn't matter if they served in the military or not, it matters if they fought, lived, died for this country we call the United States of America.

Do it for Max Cleland. Do it for everyone who lived honorably, and truthfully and nobly. Get the vote out. Make voting as viral as a youtube video... be a hero. Ads don't steal elections - the GOP does.

No more stolen elections. This must NEVER happen again.

:peace: and
Raine

Having nothing to do with this entry: How do I see comments older than the ones that show?

I fell asleep early last night and want to review the older comments to see if anyone said anything to me after I dozed off, and I can't seem to figure out how to get the ones old enough that they don't show on the initial page.

I can re-order the comments to see the very OLDEST ones, but then the page size doesn't allow me to see any newer than yesterday morning.

Oh, and good morning, e-mooks and e-mamas and anyone who fits into neither category.

UPDATE(Cue Emily Litella) Nevermind. I finally got it to pop up, which also gave me the option I needed in order to see the comments older than 50 ago. Thanks!

By the way, on a different note, whenever I click on the "Set User Options" button on the left hand side of the screen, the popup window sits for a whil and then gives the "cannot display the web page" message.

FYI.

Say now....one of the definitions of "maverick" is thus:

an independent individual who does not go along with a group or party

So, if you're mainstream enough to possibly get elected president, you're no longer a maverick, right?

Discuss.

OK, I guess a short introduction is in order:

I'm Liam. I came from the SMS LiveBlog (well, not originally, originally I came from a zygote created by my Mom & Dad, but I digress), largely because here I can participate in the mornings, at lunch and in the evenings and not during work hours, without feeling like I missed out on anything, like fun topics or jokes or a paycheck after getting fired for lack of productivity.

I'm an Independent centrist-tending-towards-liberal but with fiscal conservative tendencies (in the real sense of the word, as in "if you stop spending and have a surplus, you can cut taxes" not in the sense of "let's see if people will buy it if we tell them cutting taxes on the rich will increase revenues").

I write really godawful humor essays on one of my blogs at http://liamhumor.blogspot.com and horribly uninformed political screeds at http://www.liamjohnson.net, and I have a book of the former that you can look at (but for heaven's sake, don't purchase!) at Amazon under the title "Cue Ball City (and other bald musings)", which I mention because my picture is on the cover, so you can see what I look like.

I have five children, two wives (well, one an ex, I'm no Romney) and three mortgages (on three houses, two are apartment buildings my wife manages).

Other than that, I smell funny, which is why I'm a better friend on line than in person.

Great post. The SOB's will steal this election too if they can. We can't ever (never never never) think for a pico-second these GOPhers have any honor or honesty.

We have to remember they can wiretap all phone calls, read all emails, sneak and peek without warrants, they have Diebold ES&S and all secret vote counting processes, they have all five multinational that own all cable news-o-tainment, they have fixers and push-polling, caging lists and disenfranchisement.

We are not up against a party - we are up against an election stealing machine.

We have to kill them by the numbers - we have to swamp them with the impossibility of their dreams. We have to be so big and huge and numerous that they cannot win by cheating and lying and stealing.

It is not going to be easy, they stole all that and we have to win it back fair and square because we are better than they are, we are better than they can ever be.

They did that in Boston. We had a low-wattage lefty station, they even filed a permit to construct a new antenna and go up to 10,000 watts.

As soon as the permit was approved, the format mysteriously 'flipped' to Latin/Salsa/Spanish.

The 1 million number is including numbers of dead caused by lack of electricity, lack of medical care, lack of hospitals, lack of water, etc.

Not all the deaths we caused were from bullets and bombs or combat.

The guy is just wrong. 1 million might be a low number.

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?

HOUSTON — Exxon Mobil reported second-quarter earnings of $11.68 billion Thursday, the biggest quarterly profit ever by any U.S. corporation, but the results fell well short of Wall Street expectations and shares fell in premarket trading.

The world's largest publicly traded oil company said net income for the April-June period came to $2.22 a share, up from $10.26 billion, or $1.83 a share, a year ago.

Exxon! Closing gas stations because the stations aren't profitable enough . .

Quote by liam1965:

In case I haven't said it already (and I might have, but my short-term memory has gone "up in smoke") - welcome!

They did that in Boston. We had a low-wattage lefty station, they even filed a permit to construct a new antenna and go up to 10,000 watts.

As soon as the permit was approved, the format mysteriously 'flipped' to Latin/Salsa/Spanish.

Funny, that.

Of course, this was not long after Mitt Romney Bain Capital bought Clear Channel...

And their ratings subsequently dropped off the charts. Isn't that interesting. A radio station that doesn't care about ratings, especially after upgrading the plant?

No matter really, IMO the FCC is aiming to kill off AM radio with this foolish IBOC nonsense.

In case you had any doubt, today's NY Times confirms that the Bush/Rove crew has taken over McCain's campaign:

Mr. McCain’s campaign is now under the leadership of members of President Bush’s re-election campaign, including Steve Schmidt, the czar of the Bush war room that relentlessly painted his opponent, Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, as effete, elite, and equivocal through a daily blitz of sound bites and Web videos that were carefully coordinated with Mr. Bush’s television advertisements.

The run of attacks against Mr. Obama over the last couple of weeks have been strikingly reminiscent of that drive, including the Bush team’s tactics of seeking to make campaigns referendums on its opponents — not a choice between two candidates — and attacking the opponent’s perceived strengths head-on. Central to the latest McCain drive is an attempt to use against Mr. Obama the huge crowds and excitement he has drawn, including on his foreign trip last week, by promoting a view of him as more interested in attention and adulation than in solving the problems facing American families.

Really? Damn who would have thunk!

The New Normal: McCain's Desperate Ad Hours

What the McCain campaign doesn’t want people to know, according to one GOP strategist I spoke with over the weekend, is that they had an ad script ready to go if Obama had visited the wounded troops saying that Obama was...wait for it...using wounded troops as campaign props. So, no matter which way Obama turned, McCain had an Obama bashing ad ready to launch. I guess that’s political hardball. But another word for it is the one word that most politicians are loathe to use about their opponents—a lie.

I said this over on the SMS LiveBlog, but since they're done for the day, I'll repeat here for discussion:

I believe the problem with the allowing of gay marriage in MA for couples from other states is that then *THEY CAN’T GET DIVORCED*.

Because you can only get divorced in your state of residence, but if your state of residence doesn’t recognize you’re marriage, you end up stuck.

And given that half of all straight marriages end in divorce, I would have to assume something like a similar number of gay couples will eventually split up as well…

Thoughts?

Sadly, not any more. They destroyed that by putting out a sufficient number of crappy products at the expensive price, so that people started to equate the $40 widget every year with the $129 widget every year.

And for me, the economy works out on some things. For instance, my wide feet'll destroy a pair of sneakers in about 3-5 months, no matter how well made, even if I find ones that are supposedly wide in size. If I buy the $15 pair from a discount shoe store, they may last closer to the 3 months. If I buy the $70 (or higher!) name brand, they may last closer to the 5 months, but either way, I end up better off with the cheap ones.

Try looking through Consumer Reports these days. On electronics, the differences in ratings are almost exclusively on features, usability and customer service, the reliability ratings simply don't differ by all that much on most things. So the idea that you can spend twice as much one fifth as often is no longer true.

Liam, I think a case could be made in court that an unrecognized gay marriage still constituted a civil contract. It might be more like a "common law" kind of thing, I dunno...I can't imagine one party walking away from a marriage scott-free, simply because that ceremony was not recognized in the resident state...

Thoughts?

We had a case here in RI that went to the state supreme court.. One of the first lesbian couples married in MA filed for divorce here, and the court's decision said exactly what you mentioned - they can't grant a divorce for a marriage that the state doesn't constitutionally or legislatively recognize.

Actually, I'm not sure whether the spots moving are the result of stitching the video together or whether that's just because someone did an insanely high compression on the video, leading to some pretty bad pixelation...

Now legal for out of state gays to marry in Mass!

Surrounded by cheering, clapping gay-rights activists and legislators, Governor Deval Patrick today signed a bill repealing a 95-year-old statute that had prevented gay and lesbian couples from most other states from marrying in Massachusetts.

"It's a good day," said Patrick, declaring that the repeal will "confirm a simple truth: that is, in Massachusetts, equal means equal."

Massachusetts will "continue to lead the way as a national leader" and affirm "all people come before their government as equals," Patrick said in a bill-signing ceremony at the State House's Grand Staircase. Gay marriage "is still troubling for some of our citizens," he said, "but it is still the law."

Patrick, who turned 52 today, also called the bill "a great birthday present."

Marc Solomon, executive director of MassEquality, a gay-rights organization, said, "This is really a new day. We welcome everyone from New York to come here and get married. We think it's a shame people can't get married in their own states."

The repeal took effect immediately, making Massachusetts the second state after California to allow same-sex couples to marry, regardless of residence. It opened the borders for potentially thousands of nonresident same-sex couples. That includes an estimated 49,000 couples from New York, where Governor David Paterson has instructed state agencies to recognize and grant benefits to gay couples who marry elsewhere, even though the Empire State does not authorize same-sex marriages.

Comment by Raine on 07/31/2008 19:55:49
That is AWESOME news! for Mass!

(and if I may say... for the Gov of NYS, I still contend that his move was BOLD... it was a way to finally get NY to do the right thing! )

Now this is just absurd

A former Worcester man was arraigned today on disorderly conduct charges after he allegedly slapped a 9/11 conspiracy sticker in a plane lavatory before running off the aircraft just before takeoff.

Jason Robo had boarded Delta flight 1165 for Salt Late City just after 5 p.m. Wednesday when the crew noticed he was acting nervously, said David Procopio, a State Police spokesman. Robo was spotted entering one of the bathrooms, and, after he left, a crew member found what appeared to be a handmade sticker that read: "9/11 was an inside job.''

As other passengers continued boarding, Robo suddenly bolted off the aircraft. "I have to get off this plane,'' he allegedly said.

Police said that Robo's actions sparked a search that caused the plane to be delayed for three hours. He was arraigned in East Boston District Court on charges of interfering with aircraft operation, disorderly conduct, and disorderly conduct on a public conveyance. Robo was released without bail and ordered to return to court Aug. 19.

There was no word on whether Robo preferred oral sex to oral hygiene.

Obama slams McCain over oil company tax breaks

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama seized on a record oil company profit to argue that rival John McCain offers only tax breaks for Big Oil and "short-term gimmicks" to consumers struggling with soaring gasoline prices.

The Illinois senator quickly incorporated news of Exxon Mobil's nearly $12 billion quarterly profit into his remarks at a town hall meeting here.

"No U.S. corporation ever made that much in a quarter," Obama said. "But while Big Oil is making record profits, you are paying record prices at the pump and our economy is leaving working people behind."

McCain's response, Obama said, is to propose a corporate tax plan that would give "$4 billion each year to the oil companies, including $1.2 billion for Exxon Mobil alone" and a gas tax holiday that Obama said would only "pad oil company profits and save you — at best — half a tank of gas" over an entire summer.

In recent days, Obama has complained that McCain is offering little of substance to voters and does little more than attack.

"All those negative ads he's running won't do a thing to lower your gas prices or lift up the debate in this country," Obama said.

The Braves???

One of three MLB teams I simply will not watch. (The San Francisco Baseball Giants and the Padres being the other two...)

It is official, Manny is an Ex-Sock. The Nation (mostly) breathes a sigh of relief. The 3-week tailspin the team has been in has pretty much coincided with Manny's latest tantrum. It's 2004 all over again, when we went through this with Nomar.

I am very glad he's going to the NL; the one thing I hate is traded or unsigned players landing in the AL and coming back to burn us. ("How Come We Don't Get Players Like That?, a phrase coined by ex-WBZ sportscaster Bob Lobel)

Anyway....it'll take a few days for this all to settle down.

Republicans are Disturbed, Skeptical and Saddened after Viewing New John McCain Ad

Flemington, NJ, July 31, 2008 – Results of a national study conducted today among 320 Americans revealed that a majority of Republicans (61%), reported that they were disturbed, skeptical and saddened after viewing a new ad by John McCain, which likens Barack Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

This seems at odds with the M$M narrative.

I have to admit, I like baseball, but I've been off of it for the last decade or so, because there is no Baseball Commissioner. I swear, half the crap they have at the end of the year is all planned -- gee, let's make sure a usually-crappy team makes it into the playoffs to keep interest...I dunno. I don't trust anyone who isn't overseen these days, and by a reliable overseer at that.

I will, however, watch the last 3-4 innings of a playoff game, because that's where they play real baseball. ^_^

I was actually angry with baseball in general for many years.

I no longer get upset - but am no longer a sports fan of any sort. Baseball was my game.

It was their loss, seriously the NFL was nothing until "Monday Night Football" and that was made popular by angry baseball fans looking for something else after they cancelled the World Series. I know most of my friends that were baseball fans went to basketball or football for that very reason.

I was a Mets fan through 1986, but then I lost interest. It was nice when I didn't have to worry when my team didn't do well because I didn't EXPECT them to do well.

Then 1986 came along and they won, and suddenly I cared. They still mostly sucked, but I cared, and that hurt. So I stopped.

I'm still a big Giants fan, though. Not the baseball Giants, the football Giants. Superbowl Champs, and the only team to beat the unstoppable Patriots last year!

While Watching that "Don't ask Don't tell" Daily show my mind wandered back to a truly horrid mini-series titled andromeda strain. I'm not particularly sure, but i think it had to do with that bad psuedo joke in the...thing "You don't ask, I won't tell".

Then i started to get depressed because they turned one of Random's favorite Chricton stories into a piece of shit. And as Random contemplated ending it all, his mind wandered again, this time to Mythbusters, as it so often does when Random finds logisitcal problems in...things. brought to mind where they proved that you could use a photocopy of someone's thump print to get passed a print scanner.

This made Random Laugh and finally put down the gun where he then went to watch T.V.

Email from Barack:

A few hours ago John McCain, the same man who just months ago promised to run a "respectful campaign," said he is "proud" of his latest attack ad.

That's the one attacking your enthusiasm, comparing me to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, and making false claims about my energy plan.

Now, we're facing some serious challenges in this country -- our economy is struggling, energy costs are skyrocketing, and families don't have health care.

Given the seriousness of these issues, you'd think we'd be having a serious debate. But instead, John McCain is running an expensive, negative campaign against us. Each day brings a desperate new set of attacks.

And they're not just attacking me. They're attacking you.

They're mocking the desire of millions of Americans to step up and take ownership of the political process.

They're trying to convince you that your enthusiasm won't amount to anything -- that the people you persuade, the phone calls you make, the donations you give, the doors you knock on are all an illusion. They believe that in this election the same old smears and negative attacks will prevail again.

They're wrong.

And right now, we have a few hours left to prove them wrong in a very concrete way.

Can you make a donation right now before the July fundraising deadline at midnight tonight?

Show the strength of our movement for change.

Thank you,

Barack

"BioPet DNA Breed Identification", as near as I can tell it's a DNA test for your dog, to identify what all breeds make it up...

But the weed part comes in when you see the category: This item is categorized as "Kitchen & Dining".

So, what, while I'm slicing off a small piece of my dog to be tested, I should also lop off a steak and have some dinner?

WTF?

Liam, I haven't had alcohol in 22+ years. I didn't smoke dope for 21 of those years. I became legal in Oregon at exactly 21 years clean, and smoked up that night. I got legal because it's one of the few drugs that provides pain relief for fibromyalgia. Ah, I like my distilled beverages, but nothing harder than that.

My brother sold the stuff for years, I always had access to a smoking piece, but I was never much interested.

“The executive’s current claim of absolute immunity from compelled Congressional process for senior presidential aides is without any support in the case law,” Judge John D. Bates ruled in United States District Court here.

Unless overturned on appeal, a former White House counsel, Harriet E. Miers, and the current White House chief of staff, Joshua B. Bolten, would be required to cooperate with the House Judiciary Committee, which has been investigating the controversial dismissal of the federal prosecutors in 2006.

And as a special bonus, if your account is one of those special few to be selected, you will win 1 Million dollars.

oh that's VERY cool. From what I've understood, the fuel cell technology has been doomed because it requires too much energy to split the water, thus making it an ineffective carbon-reducing technology.

This is great news.

The real beauty I see is so many possibilities in the future. Science is making huge strides. We have the first generation of PhD's that have computing power enough for better models and simulations.

How much will things change again in ten, twenty or even fifty years?

Times are a changin' (big time)

Am I the only one here who DOESN'T smoke the shit?

Really?

Am I that square?

Liam, I haven't had alcohol in 22+ years. I didn't smoke dope for 21 of those years. I became legal in Oregon at exactly 21 years clean, and smoked up that night. I got legal because it's one of the few drugs that provides pain relief for fibromyalgia. (There's no way you could know any of that, and I don't really know if you even give a crap, but that's the story.)

By all of which I mean to say, I don't think you're square. I actually prefer to be straight, most of the time. And I daresay there are many non-indulgers here, as well.

(Sorry for the delay, been doing other things for a while).

I wasn't truly offended, just kind of surprised at the topic of conversation. I know drugs (particularly pot) are not surprising in the generation directly preceding mine and my own, and I'm probably in the minority in not ever having tried anything more hard core than alcohol and (on two occasions when I had a really bad cough) narcotic cough syrup.

It's easy to fall into the trap of believing one’s own experience is “typical” and thus end up surprised when it turns out not to be.

As to fibromyalgia, I guess I had heard you say that before (I tend to forget who is who, in my head it was MadCabbieJan who had said that, over on SMS LB ), and I’m sorry to hear about it. I don’t begrudge you anything that helps or, in point of fact, anything that you just want to do, as long as you’re responsible about it (that is to say don’t drive under the influence, don’t rob anyone to pay for your habit, don’t get violent under the influence of your mind-alterater of choice, etc.).

If the world worked differently than it does (that is, if common sense could be applied to law, instead of having to be extremely specific and rigid in application) I’d much rather we decriminalize USAGE and move to greater enforcement of the irresponsibilities. Drink all you want, but endanger someone by getting behind the wheel and we’re taking you down, that sort of thing.

It doesn’t work, of course, because the stricter you make the laws, the more likely the policeman is going to let you off with a warning if you look down on your luck, or like doing the punishment would be an extreme hardship for you.

But the point is, I have no problem, morally with drugs.

Wow, that’s about as long as I’ve gone in a long time without cracking a joke. It wasn’t easy, let me tell you!

I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.
