The Candidacy as Greek Tragedy
Author: BobR    Date: 08/31/2016 13:11:26

Since the time of Greek Tragedy, we have been warned of the dangers of hubris. It's a simmering stew of pride, narcissism, and stubbornness that causes the hubristic to crash headlong into dire fates, ignoring the warnings along the way, assuming ones self to be immune to the consequences. There's a saying "Pride goeth before a fall", which fits into this same description. It also seems to be befitting of Candidate tRump.

As Citizen tRump, he was able to do all sorts of "business" without attracting a lot of attention. Sure, he'd splash his name all over everything like a dog marking his territory, but after a while people just shook their heads and chalked it up to "Trump being Trump". He was a ridiculous figure, one who bragged about his business acumen, while privately filing bankruptcies and quietly walking away from his many failures with whatever shekels he could stash in his sack.

For some reason (perhaps a narcissistic need), the attention he was getting as Citizen tRump wasn't enough, and decided to run for president. He found that the more outrageous things he said, the more attention he got, and the more he rose in the polls. To the media, he was performing monkey always reliable for pooping in his hand and throwing it everywhere. To the Republican primary voters, he was the voice of their inner Id, and they liked seeing their dank reflections in his words. Campaign advisers and Republican party leaders asked him to reel it in, to dial down the rhetoric. In his hubris, Candidate tRump did not anticipate any potential blowback in his scorched earth campaign. He assumed he would be able to stand toe-to-toe with seasoned politicians.

Candidate tRump went so far as to ask Russia to hack Secretary Clinton's emails, after it was discovered that Russia hacked the DNC. Democrats in the House were not amused. Besides the blatant borderline treason of such a request (which he would claim as a joke), it was wholly unpresidential. They have decided to take action:
Top House Democrats are asking the FBI to investigate whether connections between Donald Trump’s campaign aides and Russian interests led to the cyberattacks at the Democratic National Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

“We are writing to request that the FBI assess whether connections between Trump campaign officials and Russian interests may have contributed to these attacks in order to interfere with the U.S. presidential election,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter sent to FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday.
[...]
The lawmakers said that “overt and covert actions by Trump campaign officials on behalf of Russian interests” have raised “serious questions.”

They referenced several reports about Trump campaign officials’ or his advisers’ ties to Russia. They mentioned long-time Trump adviser Roger Stone’s admission in early August that he had previously communicated with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. They also said Trump foreign policy adviser Carter Page traveled to Moscow and delivered a speech critical of the U.S. and how Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who’s endorsed Trump, traveled to Moscow last December and ate at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s table.

They also expressed concern about Paul Manafort, who served as Trump’s campaign chairman until he resigned recently after a series of damning reports about his involvement in Ukraine.

Had tRump simply kept his mouth shut about the hack, or even condemned it (which would have been the statesman-like thing to do), this call for an investigation may not have happened. Of course - had he not decided to run for president, this potential illegality may not have occurred. But what about illegalities that occurred while he was still Citizen tRump?

One of his "businesses" was a modeling agency, based in NYC. He would sign up teenage girls for modeling contracts, and put them in a "sweatshop"-like dorm, and charge them outrageous rent for the dubious privilege of living there. Were that the only problem, then it would only be sleazy and predatory. No, he went further, and broke immigration law by recruiting and hiring illegal immigrants:
Speaking to supporters in Iowa on Saturday, Trump said he would crack down on visitors to the United States who overstay their visas and declared that when any American citizen "loses their job to an illegal immigrant, the rights of that American citizen have been violated." And he is scheduled to give a major address on immigration in Arizona on Wednesday night.

But the mogul's New York modeling agency, Trump Model Management, has profited from using foreign models who came to the United States on tourist visas that did not permit them to work here, according to three former Trump models, all noncitizens, who shared their stories with Mother Jones. Financial and immigration records included in a recent lawsuit filed by a fourth former Trump model show that she, too, worked for Trump's agency in the United States without a proper visa.

Foreigners who visit the United States as tourists are generally not permitted to engage in any sort of employment unless they obtain a special visa, a process that typically entails an employer applying for approval on behalf of a prospective employee. Employers risk fines and possible criminal charges for using undocumented labor.
(there is MUCH more at the link)

Would Citizen tRump have gotten into trouble for doing this? Per the article, it is fairly widespread and common in the industry, which is why he figured he could get away with it. Realistically he could have - were it not for his hubris driving him to seek more infamy by running for president. Modeling agencies get away with it, but they aren't presidential candidates, where scrutiny is done with a 100W bulb, and all the dark critters hidden under your bed are swept out for all to see.

As Citizen tRump, he was able to do his dirty business like anyone else. By becoming Candidate tRump, though, his hubris has pushed him to the edge of an abyss, into which he may well disappear.

Getting into a Twitter fight with the former Presidente De Mexico. Why haven't any of the handlers for the Vulgar Yam wrestled the smartphone from his hands? All he needs going forward is a Motorola Razor.

Good morning, bloggers!!!

I fear that Trump will make a fool of himself and embarrass our country.

BobR, excellent blog. I will add that Sophocles and Euripides would have seen in Donald Trump many of the traits they saw in their own day. "Whom the gods would destroy, they first drive mad" is still an apt phrase and may serve as Trump's political epitaph.

The Clinton campaign is not just efficient, it's are rather brilliant.
After weeks of Brooklyn telegraphing a competitive race in traditionally red states and making public moves that look like initial investments — boosting staff, holding fundraisers and promising more investments — Trump is now campaigning in Arizona, which has voted Republican in 15 of the past 16 elections, while his running mate goes to Georgia, a state that’s gone red in seven of the past eight cycles.

That’s a deployment of precious resources away from swing states that Trump must win to make the Electoral College math work in his favor.

In private, members of Clinton’s team draw a direct line between their activity in those states and Trump's worries there. In public, Democrats are starting to cheer the success.

“This would be the equivalent of Hillary having to campaign in Massachusetts or having to campaign in California, except money," said Democratic strategist Chris Lehane, a veteran of Bill Clinton’s campaign and White House teams who remains close to the family’s operation. “Either he has fallen for it hook, line and sinker, or there are substantive concerns given his changes in some of the margins within specific cohorts of voters. Either way, it’s good news."
