Uncivil Actions
Author: clintster    Date: 08/14/2008 12:02:54

Back in the year 1996, Al Franken wrote a book entitled “Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot: And Other Observations” When it was released, many right wingers, including the very prominently named Mr. Limbaugh decried it as an attack and a smear campaign. Were one to read the book, however, the reader would find that in and amongst the many jokes about Rush’s weight, his several divorces, and his out and out lies, that Franken was in fact attempting to throw a satirical light upon what was quickly becoming standard operating procedure for the right wing: building liberal straw-men to knock down at will.

Indeed, Franken mentioned in many interviews that his book was not so much about making jokes at Limbaugh’s expense as it was about bemoaning the loss of civility in public discourse. Increasingly, especially amongst conservatives, it seemed that one had to pass an ideological purity test in order to be considered “one of us”. Those who harbored different opinions on one or two subjects were immediately looked upon as “unclean” and cast aside. In his own way, Al Franken may have hoped to mend that rift in civility and bring some sort of common sense back to political discourse. Unfortunately, it seems as if the body politic has taken those sutures and torn them asunder for the sake of convenience.

Two incidents over the past couple of weeks have underscored the seething current of violence that bubbles beneath the surface in our modern politically-oriented society.

CASE ONE: Late last month, the congregation at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville were preparing to celebrate Sunday with a children’s performance of the musical “Annie Jr.” A man named David Adkisson entered the sanctuary carrying a guitar case. The UUs, being the accepting people they are, assumed he had come in to join and maybe pick some guitar for the service. Instead, Adkisson reached into the case and pulled out a shotgun, firing into the congregation. Greg McKendry stepped between Adkisson and his other targets, receiving the full brunt of the blast. Another parishioner was struck and later died. More members rose from their pews and wrestled Adkisson to the ground, holding him until police arrived. In all, two people were murdered and seven others were injured.

Adkisson, who had recently had his food stamps benefits reduced, had apparently expected to be killed by the police after the confrontation, as he left a note explaining his actions in his vehicle. He targeted the church specifically for its “liberal” viewpoints and its acceptance of gays and lesbians. A search of his house revealed a selection of books by a variety of conservative authors, including “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder” by Michael Savage, and “Let Freedom Ring: Winning the War of Liberty Over Liberalism”

CASE TWO: Yesterday a man walked into the Arkansas state headquarters of the Democratic Party, claiming to want to volunteer for the upcoming campaign. He said he wanted to meet Bill Gwatney, the state party chairman. When he was refused, Timothy Johnson pushed through to Gwatney’s office, introduced himself to Gwatney and shot him several times with a handgun. Johnson led police on a 30-mile chase before he himself was shot and killed.

In between the murder and the chase, Johnson had fled into the nearby headquarters of the Arkansas Baptist Association, and pulled a gun on a clerk there. When asked what had gone wrong, Johnson only replied that he had recently lost his job. While it may not have been politically motivated, it is interesting to note that Johnson chose to shoot the chairman of the state Democratic Party.

Two cases of lower-income Americans taking out their frustrations in a most violent manner. Three people dead, apparently for nothing more than ideology. It is also worth noting that the Knoxville shootings were replaced very quickly on the front pages after it happened. The shooting in Little Rock, which might have been a lead at another time and were it another party headquarters, is already being buried under coverage of the Olympics and the Georgian conflict. In a land where discourse has degraded so precipitously, it is difficult not to imagine something of a more deadly and earth-shaking nature happening between now and November.

The question is, do we as Americans have the wherewithal to see what has happened here and prevent such a major tragedy from occurring? Maybe we can’t change the course of civility overnight, but perhaps we can find a way to dam the river before the flood washes us all away, regardless of political stripe.

Listening to Keith's Podcast...

CW seems to indicate Joe Biden on the ticket.

And he's brought up something brilliant...if it is Biden, Keith is expecting the Republicans to bring up the plagiarism allegation from the '88 campaign. (remember that?)

Obama has a ready-made weapon there...."Ok, Senator McCain, if you want to bring up things that happened in the 80s, let's talk about the Keating Five...."

TRMS: NICE!

Morning, BTW!

Comment by wickedpam on 08/14/2008 12:32:19
TBH - when I hear the name Biden the first thing that comes to mind is the plagarism stuff. I just remember the news making such a huge deal about it.

But it is a brilliant way to bring up things like the Keating 5

Another gem from Keith last night...

GW has spent about 450 days of his presidency in Crawford, and a similar number at Camp David.

So, he's spent about 900 days on vacation in those spots alone. (not counting things like visiting the Olympics and other days off...)

He's been president 8 years, or 2,920 days.

So, he's been on vacation for 30% of that time.

Or, put another way, he's been on vacation for 109 days out of every year in office.

Won't it be nice to have a working president next time? Hell, I don't think even Senator McCain would take that amount of time off...

Is it OK for me to still read Tom Clancy, even though I knew he was a right-winger from the beginning?

(Remember, he came to prominence mostly because Pres. Reagan liked "Hunt for Red October" back in the day...)

Ewww.

TriSec has one issue with ocean food....scallops. I like 'em, but they don't like me, if you catch my meaning.

There must be close proximity to porcelain facilities, otherwise there's going to be an unfortunate incident, should I accidentally eat one.

I skimmed the news; there was a red-tide outbreak back about mid-July. Sure hope your shrimp was fresher than that, but that could explain much...

Ew...I don't like scallops!

They were fresh. And, my friend Tim did them up on the grill, spicy and yummy.

That was Monday around 8pm.

By 3 am, I was yackin' all over the place.

I would only eat a scallop if I saw it in the shell....I used to fish; I know some of the less-than-honest types would pull up a skate and punch circles out of their wings with a cookie-cutter and sell that as 'scallops'.

Never mind the scallop; what is your stance on belly clams? Or tomalley, for that matter?

Ewwww....really?!?!?

Lemme put it this way. The only seafood I don't like are scallops. Everything else? Bring it on.

Of course the more research I do about eating animals and the food industry in general, the more I am trying to stop eating seafood and dairy as well.

Those are much harder than giving up meat!

Say now, here's something I bet you didn't know about nightingales...

The Nightingale is the national bird of Iran.

So, I'd be curious to know if the gentleman massaging poop into American's faces is *really* Asian, or maybe he could be an Iranian in disguise...

Watch this Ahmed, I will rub poop on American women!!!

I call myself a "flexatarian" but I seem to be gravitating more towards a vegan.

Actually, I was thinking about it the other day....I want to write a book called "Happy Food." Because, for me it's not about the food itself; it's about the conditions the animals are kept in and what is done to them.

For example, I will eat eggs but ONLY if they are from my friend Nine...she's got 6 chickens who wander around the backyard. They are very happy chickens, and are in no way forced to lay eggs.

Oh, why do I think of Dennis Miller when I read that?

MILLER: Critics of the president's speech have pointed out that he repeatedly mispronounced the name "Abu Ghraib prison." Hey, I'll worry about how the president says "Abu Ghraib" when someone in the Arab world learns to pronounce the word "democracy," OK? [6/4/04]

I wouldn't mind a good, hard boss fight that took a couple hours as long as I got a chance to hit the pause button or save occasionally. You don't get that in an online game - you have to stick it out with your team wrecking your health and sanity, or have a large group that spans several world time zones (which is tough if you don't know some Japanese).
