September Morn
Author: Raine    Date: 09/11/2008 12:21:22

Good morning everyone.

A few weeks ago, I went back to to NY for a visit. Being that I was going to be staying in Jersey City with a friend for a few nights, I had to do what I had not done in years, I went to the WTC Path Station. You know the one: it ran under the towers. The station reopened in 2003, and a new entrance was finished by 2006. It was beautiful, really. But: they have since torn it down.

I was rather shocked to see it gone when I returned this summer. The entrance was moved, the grand design was gone. Something else shocked me: there was nothing there. Nothing but chain-link fences, plywood covering up what appeared to be nothing more than another generic, non-distinct NYC (or any city for that matter) construction site. I heard the sounds, the bulldozers, the jackhammers, the trucks --- but I couldn't see anything. it was blocked from view, ALL around the area. It seemed wrong, and not because I was in mourning for this day still... I could not put my finger on it... Was it the waste of money... of time? The lack of regard by those in charge to the importance of the day for the victims families? I didn't know.
And then Paul Reikoff reminded me. (and he said it better than I ever could)

'7 years later, 'Ground Zero' is nothing but a hole in the ground. A gaping mammoth hole.'
http://news.thomasnet.com/IMT/WTC_site_construction_July2007.JPG

All the talk of rebuilding and honoring the victims and the victims' familes, all the talk of honor & service to our country, all the promises of healing and rebuilding ... all of that talk, and 'Ground Zero' has become nothing more than a symbol of empty promises.

It took 8 years for us to put a man on the moon. One would think that we could close this gaping flesh wound sooner than that. There is no way a wound can heal if it is still open. 2749 people died in NYC that day. 184 people perished in Washington D.C. 40 people were lost forever to a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania on September 11. Say a prayer for their families in whatever way you choose, but be angry that those who HAVE the power to close the hole in the ground have not. Ground Zero has become nothing more than a symbol of broken promises because of them.

First? Raine, nice post I am feeling at loose ends today, thanks to a certain commentary I heard last night.

Good Morning.

I've had my PTSD moment for the day. I awoke this morning with an unsettled stomach....and put on NECN (New England Cable News) first thing, like I always do.

Of course, like every other news agency today, they're doing their retrospective coverage.

Not 30 seconds after turning on the TV this morning, I was greeted by archival footage of the second plane going in, with the incredulous voice-overs of the stunned anchors.

Even now, typing the words, I'm shaking. Thank god I did not hear any planes overhead this morning.

I allowed myself a brief patriotic moment, as I pulled out my worn "Old Glory" and hung it back out today. I don't recall if I had it out the morning of 9/11, but if I did, it's the same flag. Over the ensuing 8 years, I have rarely flown it. (favoring the Culpepper Minutemen and Bennington Flags).

In any case....

Livin, as the closest member to Lower Manhattan, if you get anywhere near it today, please look skyward and remember for us.

Regarding New York's "hole in the ground" (still the best Special Comment ever), Boston unveiled a tidy little memorial over the weekend at Logan Airport. Sorry for the small picture, but there's not much better out there yet.

'Course they can rebuild No. 7 - since there was no reason for it to "fall" anyway!

morning

blogging from home today and tomorrow.

How long does it take to build something in NYC? I've been wondering that for a while. I know it probably takes longer the average for various reasons. The workers at the Pentagon worked extra shifts and pushed hard to finsh repairing a high security building in one year from the date it happened. They wanted to basically give the finger to OBL.

I know the workers in NY want to do the same thing and that repairing a building is different the building a new one, but still 7 years?

Raine just mentioned to me that it took 7 years from the initial groundbreaking to the finished WTC towers.

It's been 7 years and there's still nothing there.

Thinking about driving from the hotel in Jersey City, and a collegue casually mentioning - "hey - the World Trade Center's on fire", none of us realizing the enormity of what had happened, or what was to come.

Hey ya'll. A mod from another board has a great way to show support for your candidate. So I'm passing this along, lets start a movement. All Americans should join in:

In a few months, Americans will go to the polls to elect a new leader.

The person elected will not just be the President of the Republicans or Democrats, but of all Americans.

So we need to come together in solidarity and show support for the candidate of our choice, Reps and Dems alike.

If you support Obama and change, please drive with your headlights on all day.

If you support the same crap as the last 8 years, John McCain, please drive with your headlights off at night.

Thank You.

I was driving to work and the morning show said something about a plane hitting the WTC, they thought it was just a small personal plane, no one knew what was going on but everyone's first thought was to hope people were okay.

Then getting closer to work sitting at a light I happen too look up and see a plane turning back toward National and thinking it odd to see a plane at that time in that place. Came over a small hill a few minutes later and saw smoke way off in the distance and knew it couldn't be good.

In the office we had a hard time getting the TV to tune into something with just rabbit ears but still beinga able to see the buildings fall.

It's all still very clear in my head.

Kinda like my experience.

A co-worker casually glided by my cube that morning and mentioned that "A plane hit the world trade center, have you heard anything?"

"Oh, Excellent" were my first words.

Then I spent the next 15 hours glued to the radio and TV.

It was that first night that really freaked me out, when I heard the planes overhead, knowing they were F-15s on Combat Air Patrol.

I tend to take a more pragmatic view of the site , I don't know if it becuase I am from the stae, or spent a lot of time working in NYC, but I really think that a new building should go there, with a nice humble memorial park. IT is a Major peice of real estate, and it should be returned as such.

But that is me. they started building the towers in 1966, and the had the official opening in 1973. one would think... one would think... it could be SOMETHING by now.

Morning all...

For the past six years, I've marked this day by picking a place to post my now well-told story about the first moment I heard about what was going on. I don't know if anyone knew what that day had to bring, nor the way it would change our lives for years to come.

Today I was on my way to work, feeling the same chilly September morning, looking up to the same clear sky, listening to silly radio bits, and it occurred to me that we're in the same situation - our country is under attack, not from abroad, but from within. However this time through our own strength and determination we could help shape the events that would change our lives, our country, and our world for years to come.

We can't go back and reclaim what might have been. We can only go forward and reclaim what has been taken from us, both by those who wounded us with their attacks and by those among us who turned that event to their own prejudicial and power-hungry devices.

I was getting ready for work. My girlfriend had already left for work so she was incommunicado, being a teacher. I was picking out clothes to wear, listening to the Dee Snider Show, and "Nick the Intern" interrupted the show a la Cub Reporter Chris Lavoie and said "Hey you guys...a piece of breaking news sort of....a plane just flew into the WTC." They, too, thought it was a private plane, etc.

I went out into the Living Room to check the TV and got there just in time to SEE the 2nd plane fly into the tower. I immediately felt sick....

I did go into work, but the entire we all just sat there watching the monitors. I worked in the call Center back then, so we always had tvs on to watch the market.

It was such a bizarre feeling, that day.

My back stiffened and I felt a little twinge as my back settled against the very cold, stiff leather car seat this morning. It's just starting to work itself out. Mid 40's. Yuk.

At about 8:50 last night (probably just before Keith went to his Special Comment) I heard a loud hum and thump and watched the bedroom cable box reset itself. The bedroom TiVo seemed to ride through it without a burp, but the living room one (which of course was the one doing the recording) did not. So much for TiVoing the Special Comment :rage:

In past years I've posted my complete 9/11 story. I suppose I might as well do it again. Sorry it's so long, but I don't know how to make it any shorter

I was staying in Jersey City the night of Sept. 10 in preparation for a training class I was conducting the next day at a well known insurance company. They are located in a building one short block from the river. For those of you not familiar with the area, Jersey City is located directly across the Hudson River from the World Trade Center.

I met a collegue in the lobby at about 8:50 on the morning of Sept. 11. We had checked out and ran into an employee for the insurance company that was in town from Trenton for the training. Since he had a car and we were about 5 blocks from the building, he offered to drive us. The radio was not on. As we drove he casually commented, "Hey - the World Trade Center is on fire...". We looked over and saw flames licking out from several floors. I thought to myself, "I wonder if it was electrical or some terrorist left a backpack bomb in a restroom?"

We got to the main drag and saw lots of people running in both directions, towards and away from the river. We parked the car in a deck beneath a building directly on the river and walked to the office building. People were evacuating the building we were parked in - I thought I overhead something about a "bomb threat". I walked into a deli to get a bagel before the training and was told that an airplane had hit the tower. I naturally assumed a terrorist had flown a private plane loaded with explosives into the tower.

It wasn't until we actually got inside the office that we found out it had been a hijacked airliner. As we gamely tried to setup our equipment, the events unfolded - the Pentagon being hit, the second tower being hit, and then finally the tower collapsing. Due to company security policies, we had been parked in a conference room with no access to the outside world. We waited for what seemed like a very long time, and saw people running through the halls crying. It occurred to me that New Jersey (at least that part) is really just a suburb of NYC. I also remembered on a previous visit (when we had stayed in NYC) sitting on the dock of the ferry on the NYC side waiting for the boat to take us across to Jersey City, and seeing packed ferries unloading New Jersey citizens loaded with brief cases and cell phones on their way to the financial district to work.

Finally, we were told that the FBI was evacuating all of the tall buildings along the river. We also found out that all flights were cancelled. We called the hotel to get our rooms back, but all the rooms were taken already. As we left the building, I looked over at the Twin Towers and was shocked. When we had walked in, there were flames licking out of one of the buildings. Now there was a huge cloud of thick black smoke and there was an empty space where one of the towers had once stood.

We were told by police to evacuate away from the river. Our suitcases were in the trunk of the car parked beneath the building on the river. The thought of being on foot in Jersey City with no clothes and no place to stay in the middle of what appeared to be a declaration of war on the United States was a bit scary. Fortunately, the police let us go pick up the car. Even more fortunate was that we even HAD someone with a car. As we drove away, the second tower fell. We inched our way out of Jersey City, and began looking for a place to spend the night.

I could not get a cell phone signal. By now, my home office and my wife (at the time) had been trying to get ahold me for about 3 hrs. We drove , no map, not really knowing where we were going, only knowing that we needed to find a hotel, and our customer's collegue had to get back home. We finally got the last two rooms in a shabby Howard Johnsons in N. Plainfield NJ. I also managed to get a message back to my office and get my wife on the phone to let them know I was okay. It wasn't until we got checked in and I watched the footage on TV did the scale of everything really sink in. I felt very alone and wanted nothing more than to be home with my wife.

The next day we rented a car (one way) and drove the 14 1/2 hrs home.

There have been many stories about lucky people who did not go to work that day and were spared. For me, I had been up for a preliminary visit two weeks prior to 9/11 and stayed at the Marriott at the World Trade Center. I would have stayed there again on the night of 9/10, except there was some sort of conference scheduled and the hotel had jacked up the rates. We had to stay in N.J to save money.

Otherwise, I would have been walking through the lobby of the Word Trade Center about the time the first plane hit.

I think Obama should change the theme of his campaign to be more specific - from change to anti-corruption.

He needs to go after McCain for his involvement with Keating and Abramoff. Running against the influence of lobbyists worked for the Dems in 2006, and worked well. Plus you have Palin's ties to Abramoff when she was mayor. Plus you have McCain's hypocrisy on campaign finance reform. Plus you have Obama's greatest achievement in the Senate - the lobbying and ethics reform bill.

McCain wants to steal the change theme - go ahead and let him. We'll tear that bullshit mantra apart until there's nothing left but the checks that the Indians wrote.

From the op-ed piece:

If you really want to see a strange line of attack, take a look at the wolf ad. It cuts from Palin’s face to Obama’s to packs of wolves prowling through the forest, presumably in search of vice-presidential prey. Then comes the text claiming that as Barack drops in the polls, “he’ll try to destroy her.” Given Palin’s affection for shooting wolves from airplanes with high-powered rifles, it’d be more appropriate to have them cowering in their dens while she aims her machine gun from a diving Cessna.

To finish my story o' 9/11.

I went back in the kitchen just as the second plane hit. I went to work with the NPR mosheen on. Since my office was in the AOL call center, there wasn't much calling going on, but all the TVs were on showing what was happening. My time line is still screwed up, but I think they were showing the replay of the Towers crashing when I walked it.

I got to my desk and comiserated with my coworkers and tried to do a little work. One of my coworkers was really, really freaking out. She kept calling out things in a minute by minute detail. It was getting on everybody's nerves. I very politely told her we are all very upset, and her commentary wasn't helping. I think I gave her and told her things were going to be okay. Anyway she calmed down. Since nothing was getting done, nobody was calling, grief was in the air all over the country. AOL sent everybody home.

On my way home I found myself thinking on how is Bush going to use this for political advantage. That was one of my big concerns, what was he going to do next.

Mrs Mondo & I watched the news until we couldn't stand it anymore.

To be honest, we both didn't feel any connection to what was happening in NYC. No friends, no family there. What made it so personal for us was the attack on the Pentagon. These bastards had attacked our home town! Especially for Mrs Mondo, she was raised in Arlington, not that far from the Pentagon. For me it was a place I had been to, where my dad had worked. Where friends of my had worked.

Anti-American Liberal Rant:

I noticed at lunch that all the flags around my building are at half-staff. Was there an executive order declaring today a national day of mourning? Otherwise, this is wrong. Only the president has the authority to order the flags lowered; local folks can't do it.

Actually, this has irritated me for quite some time. It might seem to be the right thing to do if a soldier is killed, but every time there's a shooting, or a drunk-driving accident involving high school kids, their school is quick to lower the flags.

You might be trying to honor them, but by lowering the flags for every damn thing, it CHEAPENS the honor. Save it for the things that truly matter....like 9/11 or 12/7 or Memorial day...

end liberal anti-american rant.

THAT is infuriating.

The problem is - and correct me if I am wrong - the committee that hears election fraud complaints at the FEC is not full - they don't have enough members to get a quorum. (Thanks to Bush).

Therefore, none of these issues (like McCain's allegedly fraudulent bank loan application - and many other complaints) will even get a hearing, much less a final adjudication until AFTER the election. And in most cases, the punishment is a fine.

If they do enough to steal the election, McCain will be president, and his removal is not a remedy available to the FEC. So, they just pay the fines (maybe a few scapegoats get a couple years in a min. security prison.)

Wow... Randi just made a hefty wager... I didn't QUITE get the number but she just bet 13, 400 (something like that) dollars that the October Surprise is the capture of Osama Bin Laden.

Ok, I came back from lunch to hear that McCain is sending out fraudulent Absentee ballots to Obama supporters in Ohio?

WTF?!?!? HE should be jailed for election fraud if this is true.

The FEC let McCain off on his bank loan during the primaries already.

That reminded me... MCCain has almost spent all his public financing funds I believe. I have to go do some research on that... becuase if he did, he can't spend any more money. That number was 85 Million. That was what he got from the FEC for the general election.

Melamine found in Infant Formula -- made in China.

Please until we know more, tell your friends and family with infants to remove ANY forula made from China from the cabinets. This is the same poison found in pet food last year. They tried to say it wasn't a big deal at first then too, remember? I will not allow people to be fooled again.

My right-wing podcast is reporting that Mitt Romney has just bought a house in California. (Belmont, France, NH, Utah....he sure gets around!)

Anyway, they were speculating that he's setting himself up for a run at Governor once Arnold hangs them up...

(And Kudos to my Right Wing friend for this one..."What's his campaign slogan? You've had a governor that played a robot; now you can vote for an actual robot!"

And for more GOP voting suppression tactics:

Lose Your House, Lose Your Vote.

So they cause the economic crisis, then use it to stay in power through fraud.

Also - I hear that the Deptartment of "Justice" will not be prosecuting in the Dept. Of Interior/Oil Company sex/bribery scandal. Shocking!

It appears that this is not fraud, but is a McCain fuck-up - and it is hurting HIM.

See here.

And the county mentioned in the prior link (Hamilton) - is very, very conservative. Not likely Obama supporters.

Interesting... I am left wondering then, why so many people were calling Rayburn today saying they had gotten these ballots.

But you know what? it SHOULD hurt him. This is abysmal.

I stumbled upon THIS article from Jon Alter. Jim Crawford Republicans.

Yup, they are back to their olg games again. Disenfranchising Minority voters.

Almost - five colleges in six years.

Reminds me of the line from Tommy Boy: "Lots of people take six years to graduate. --- Yeah. They're called 'doctors.'"

Finally, U. of Idaho (insert "ho" joke here) is where she finally got her journalism degree.

So inreading around the blogs... it seems as tho Sarah agreed with Barack about Pakistan... I got this from AmericaBlog:

First, here is what Obama said earlier this year:

“Let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains, that murdered 3,000 Americans,” he said, continuing with resolve: “If we have actionable intelligence about high-valued terrorist targets and President Musharraf will not act, we will.”

Here is what McCain had to say about Obama:

Obama at the time was talking about attacking known al-Qaeda terrorist targets, not suggesting mounting an attack on the country or government of Pakistan. Still, he caught flak shortly thereafter from some on both sides of the aisle for discussing the merits of attacking a sovereign ally.

And McCain saw no distinction, while speaking with reporters, today. “That’s still bombing Pakistan,” he said when pressed on the topic. McCain then sidestepped, discussing the merits of diplomacy. “The first thing you do is you don’t tell people what you’re going to do; you make plans, and you work with the other country that is your ally and friend, which Pakistan is.”

Here is what Palin said, in the video below:

"If there is legitimate and enough intelligence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country. In fact, the president has the obligation, the duty to defend."

==================================================

That is a REAL problem for McCain. A real problem. HE now has the choice to be like *ush or Barack.
