Everyone to the lifeboats
Author: BobR    Date: 10/24/2008 12:28:56

With just over a week left in the campaign, the weirdness is really starting to kick in. The rats are fleeing the sinking ship, and the true supporters for the apparent loser are getting increasingly desperate. Every news item leaves the mind further agog.

The news yesterday that former Bush press secretary Scottie McClellan supports Obama was both shocking and banal. Everyone kind of assumed it, but it was surprising to hear him say it out loud. He joins Colin Powell in the "former Bushies for Obama" club.

What's even less surprising and yet still disgusting are the number of pundits that have carried water for the Bush Administration for so long who are seeing the writing on the wall and jumping on the Obama bandwagon:
Noted Bush-supporting former Trotskyite Christopher Hitchens has endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president! In Slate today, the beloved British alcoholic raves about how Obama isn't a sad old man, like McCain...
[...]
Atlantic blogger Andrew Sullivan was once a very prominent, very influential conservative. As recently as last year, even as he largely abandoned Bush, he was still complimenting McCain. Now, not so much.

Times columnist David Brooks scarcely deserves to be called an intellectual, but as we're using that term strictly to mean "East Coast elitists who write about politics professionally" he'll have to do. This "I'm disappointed in McCain but he'll be a good president" column was but a prelude to Brooks' statement during an interview that Obama was a perceptive intellectual surrounded by impressive people and Sarah Palin is a cancer.

Christopher Buckley was hardly a doctrinaire conservative. As a satirical novelist and a smart-ass, one imagines he's not too pleased with the rise of creationist rubes in his beloved GOP...

The writer goes on to show how Charles Krauthammer and Ross Douthat are unimpressed with McCain, and grudgingly accept that Obama would be a good president.

But while those who need face time on the TV machine or column space in a magazine to earn a living have decided to follow their paychecks instead of their beliefs, the true believers are digging in. The story that will likely be the biggest over the next few days is the McCain campaign worker who claims that a scary negro mugged her and carved a "B" in her face:
This weird, hysterical story got the MONSTER GIANT THREE-DECK SIREN treatment on Drudge for part of the afternoon, and then it was mysteriously downgraded to a little link on the side. Maybe that’s because the original sensational claim was just a little too perfect (for McCain) to survive scrutiny: That this loyal 20-year-old McCain phone bank volunteer in (of course) Pennsylvania was robbed at an ATM last night because, uh, she had a McCain bumper sticker on her car, parked nearby we guess? So the liberal mugger negro took her sixty bucks and MUTILATED HER WITH A KNIFE.

Oh, and the mutilation was political, because the criminal Obama supporter CARVED A LETTER IN HER FACE!

B!

For “B”arack Obama, of course!

http://wonkette.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/uhh.jpg

... and - of course - the "B" is backwards, as if someone had been looking in a mirror when doing the "carving" (and just how dull was that knife? It looks like it didn't even break the skin). Where's the swelling from the "beating"? Idiots have tried this ruse before, and the truth always comes out.

From the stupid to the downright scary, the Ohio Sec. of State office has been getting threats and cyber attacks:
Roberts spoke with Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, who has had her official state website hacked and has even been receiving death threats. A Monday press release from Brunner's office stated, "In recent weeks, phone lines and e-mail channels have been barraged, even in the business filings section of the office, with menacing messages and even threats of harm or death. Last week, a suspicious package covered with threatening messages and containing an unidentified powder was mailed to the Secretary of State's office via the previous location of the Client Services Center."

"Veterans in my office ... said they've never seen anything like this," Brunner told Roberts. "It's very unfortunate. It seems like there's an effort to shake the confidence of voters."

Roberts noted that even though the Supreme Court said Brunner isn't required to make the lists of new registrations available to the GOP for possible challenges at polling places, Republicans have continued pressing for her to turn them over voluntarily.

Perhaps there's something in the Great Lakes water. A clerk in the elections office in Franklin, IN distributed letters calling Obama a "Black Hitler":
A Republican county election clerk distributed copies of an apparent chain letter referring to Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama as a "young, black Adolf Hitler" to two employees but later told police she intended it to be a joke.

The employees, who had voted for Obama in Indiana's Democratic primary, discovered the letters at their desks after returning from Labor Day weekend, Deputy Sheriff Doug Cox said in a police report made public this week. One of the workers complained, and surveillance video showed Johnson County Clerk Jill Jackson placing an item one worker's desk at 5:27 p.m. on the Friday of Labor Day weekend, Cox said.

"She admitted to being responsible for the letter, but only did it as a joke," Cox said. Jackson told police she had intended to speak with the workers upon returning to work but forgot.
[...]
The letter does not mention Obama by name but makes references to his ties to a Chicago church whose pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, adheres to black liberation theology. It is heavy with racial references, criticizing the candidate's parentage with such comments as, "He is proud of his 'African heritage' (a father who got a white girl pregnant and deserted her)" and asking, "Where is the pride in his 'White heritage?'"

The unsigned letter urges readers to send it to everyone they know.

"The U.S. citizens are just not ready to give up their country to this young, black 'Adolf Hitler' with a smile, poor direction and absolutely no experience!" it said.

OH... It's a "joke"... HA-HA! NOW I get it... It's Republican humor - it's not supposed to be funny.

This is the crescendo folks, the final scene. Just over a week now for all the desperate crazies to get their last punches in, and all the opportunists to play Brutus and stab McCain in the back on the way to the lifeboats. We can take it, can't we?

Yes we can.

Morning, folks!

Did we hear the financial news on the way in this morning? I posted this in the overnight blog:

Did everyone hear the news this morning that overnight trading hit the circuit breaker? Dow futures were down 550, and trading was halted.

There's talk it may make it to 7,000 today, which would trigger an automatic hold for an hour.

Methinks this doesn't bode well.

I'm glad my company is privately owned, not publicly traded. The bear market could still cause problems for sales, and my 401k is taking a beating, but at least I feel pretty secure in my job.

Same thing here - the company is still under 10 employees and we're actually still doing OK, though sales will probably be down compared to Oct. 07..

And of course, no 401k, no pension.. I'm thinking I might buy up some of these new bonds the State of RI issued today, depending on the interest rate.

And ohohoho! Alan Greenspan!

Mr. Ayn Rand hisself!

Fundamental flaw indeed! The same flaw that runs through all of Rand's philosophy that I've been saying whenever the topic of Rand or objectivism came up - she ONLY attributes human greed to her destroyers, not to her creators or her collective.

Insider advantage Poll:

Senate Race, Presidential Race Both Toss-Ups In Georgia

(10/24/08) A new InsiderAdvantage / Poll Position survey shows Georgia is a toss-up state in both the U.S. Senate and presidential campaigns.

In the presidential race, Barack Obama has a slight edge over John McCain, although it is within the margin of error. In the U.S. Senate race, Saxby Chambliss has a 2-point edge over Jim Martin, although it, too, is within the margin of error.

The two polls were conducted last night, each with 615 registered, likely voters. The margin of error for both is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

The results:

Presidential

Obama, 48 percent

McCain, 47 percent

Other, 2 percent

Undecided, 3 percent

U.S. Senate

Chambliss, 44 percent

Martin, 42 percent

Buckley, 2 percent

Undecided, 12 percent

I wish Bob Barr wasn't such an ass.

I think the Libertarian Party has about $50 in their campaign fund. Instead of running around complaining about the debates, or the ballots in Texas, or ten million other useless things, we all might have been better served if their meager budget was thrown into his home state. If Bob could have polled even 5% in Georgia, it could have flipped more convincingly.

But still, within the margin of error is usually considered "tied". Keep pushing!

Good morning, bloggers!!!

I hope that everyone is doing well today. I have been very busy, but thought I would swing by before getting ready for a substitute teaching interview.

I think that Obama will do well, assuming that the campaign keeps on working hard and that there are no late developments that favor John McCain. However, we should expect the rhetoric from the right wing to be even more heated as the campaign winds down.

Good morning everyone.

My day got off to a slow start but I did hear the Savage Weiner fan earlier. The guy is proof of how scrambly the right-wing is especially the ones spreading the lie that Obama is trying to fudge a birth certificate. Considering that people were questioning McCain's citizenship with the whole Canal Zone thing, they may want to seriously reconsider their strategy.

From John Moody, exec VP of Faux:

It had to happen.

Less than two weeks before we vote for a new president, a white woman says a black man attacked her, then scarred her face, and says there was a political motive for it.

Ashley Todd, a 20-year-old white volunteer for John McCain’s presidential campaign, says she was mugged at an ATM machine in Pittsburgh (my hometown) by a big black man. She further says he threw her down, then disfigured her by carving the letter “B” into her face with a sharp implement when he saw that she supported McCain, not Barack Obama.

Part of the appeal of, and the unspoken tension behind, Senator Obama’s campaign is his transformational status as the first African-American to win a major party’s presidential nomination.

That does not mean that he has erased the mutual distrust between black and white Americans, and this incident could become a watershed event in the 11 days before the election.

If Ms. Todd’s allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee.

If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting.

For Pittsburgh, a city that has done so much to shape American history over the centuries, another moment of truth is at hand.

=================================================

We have been on the MB looking into this sory... and it appears to be a hoax.

Comment by Raine on 10/24/2008 15:53:23
Besides, if the repubs are hoping that they will win this election based on THIS incident, they are truly delusional.

Everything Moody says is complete BULLSITE! IT's not about the scary Black Man Obama, this election is about the ECONOMY! This little 20 year old twit is just a woman who needs serious psychological help.

I am thinking this is a lot deeper than that. Republicanism is many things, but I won't blame one party on racism in America -- tempting as it may be. This sits on John MCCain supporters solely.

Grampy is done.

Remember what I posted earlier, from John Moody, Exec VP of Faux --
If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting.

Seriously, I am getting more and more angry about this, this woman was trying to start a race war in this country... (make no mistake --- this was about RACE) and now they are saying she has had mental health issues? the poor littel sick girl who wasted valuable police resources?

I feel bad -- to a certain extent, but let's now think about WHICH plan she supported. McCains... the one that certainly wouldn't help her.

Now she will be charged, and quite possibly go to jail... on the taxpayer dollar, maybe then those evil mean bad liberals will get her the healthcare she needs.

 that is JUST how I felt! We were there for a reason. I gotta say our county courthouse was pretty nice... We snaked around too until we went into the general assembly hall.

It's funny, the security guard told us it was 15 minute wait. I found him afterwards and asked whim where he got his info... he blamed it on the poll workers telling him to say that... but you know, it is a lie I can live with.

The poll workers in Fulton County were very kind and courteous, very helpful when I asked a million questions... I will say this, I saw NO ONE drop out of line.

I did see people asking for us to save a space... which was no prob to me... Fulton county --- apparently so is DeKalb (only a few blocks from us) is voting like crazy... and I feel really proud right now of this state.

There is a real and distinct possibility that Georgia will go Blue.

A few years ago, our sitting vice president and heart attack man Dick Cheney used the words "last throes" to decribe the supposed terrorist cadre that was killing our soldiers in Iraq. The phrase, in that context, turned out to be the delusion of a group of men so convinced of the righteousness of their deeds that they still have not admitted their fault to this very day.

Today I'd like to invoke that phrase to describe the utter chaos that has engulfed the Republican Party. That's right - its elected officials, its pundits, and the extremist supporters who invoke racism and hatred with their every word and action in support of those officials - are in their last throes.

I remarked in an earlier comment that these people were domestic terrorists. That indeed is still true, and some actions to enforce that label may still come to fruition. However there are much more telling signs since, signs of chaos and desperation and confusion, to show that their end is indeed near.

They may flail and shout and toss labels of anti-Americanism and of a real America, and even blacken their eyes and carve themselves, all the while trying desperately to use the tired old arguments that have worked for their ilk in the past. Their attempts to scare will not work anymore, for they are the people who cried wolf. We now know that the wolf they cry about is themselves. And we've got the shotgun.

So let them come and do and say as they please. For when the Republican Party falls to its last throes in America, no one will care enough to hear it hit the ground.

Scoop... once again you nail it.

Comment by Raine on 10/24/2008 20:53:46
May I go one step further? This woman irregardless of her mental state KNEW what she was doing. She was attempting to create a racial firestorm in America, based upon her belief on a political platform.

It was a VERY dangerous idea, and thankfully, it failed. Cooler heads, as well as a vigilant police investigation prevailed . Does anyone else remember the riots in LA? She was looking for that kind of reaction. Something to put fear and hatred in the hearts of Americans. Well guess what? She failed.

FAIL. Massive level FAIL. These are the last grasps of hatred from a party struggling to survive. Expect more in the next 10 days.... but make no mistake, it is the last grasp.

Americans don't buy this bullshit anymore. It's akin to godwinism. When you go Godwin , you fail.

The GOP has been doing a lower level version of this for years, but Ashley Todd, College republican, FAILED. She is a bigot and a hate mongerer. She tried to not only make it look like an Obama supporter, she sure as hell mentioned that he was black. What od you think her motives were?

What I REALLY want to know is WHO leaked the story to Drudge.

I am really pissed and I hope she serves time.

Actually, checking if the source is reliable, instead of wrong. It could be a source he has a lot of the time. And even then, it could just be someone pointing out the story from whatever blog site she reported it.

Comment by livingonli on 10/24/2008 22:03:07
Because Drudge is a Republican tool, he doesn't check his sources on any story which is being used for the GOP agenda. He is probably more thorough in checking the tabloid celebrity stories he posts than his political info.
