Let the Sun Shine In
Author: BobR    Date: 11/07/2008 13:21:11

The past couple days have truly been amazing. As I've gone about my daily business (such as it is), the sun has seemed a little brighter, the air a little cleaner, the smiles on people's faces a little easier. There seems to be an overwhelming feeling of goodwill, not unlike that warm and fuzzy feeling you find around Christmastime.

This is what Democracy feels like, when the people speak and end up with the government they want (of the people, by the people, and for the people). Barack Obama is bring change to Washington, DC, and it already shows. He is opening the blinds and letting the sun shine in; he is opening the doors and letting us all see what he's doing.

Only two days after winning, he's created a couple websites that show how open he will be. First, is the Transition team website. It provides information on everything going on with the transition of power. It even includes an Org Chart for the Legislative branch, with the Constitution on top (lest we forget that that "damn piece of paper" is the source of all government).

More impressive is the website for the Office of the President-elect. Right there on the front page it says:
OPEN GOVERNMENT
It’s Your America: Share Your Ideas
The story of the campaign and this historic moment has been your story. Share your story and your ideas, and be part of bringing positive lasting change to this country.

There's not a lot of stuff there yet (hey - it's only been two days) but the infrastructure is there for disseminating information to the country... and putting a "suggestion box" where anyone in the country can submit their ideas for policy agenda is unprecedented.

I think this openness is a good sign of things to come. It contrasts so sharply with the closed-door privacy of the current administration, one can't help but be reminded that Bush & Co have been hiding stuff.

He will also be replacing the White House fleet of SUVs with pluggable hybrids. How cool is that? I wonder if he'll put the solar panels back on the roof of the White House (the panels put up by Jimmy Carter and taken down by Reagan)?

Along with the open-door policy and the general feelings of giddiness is the realization that Obama will be putting people into positions of power that are actually qualified. It's become a kind of guessing game here on this blog and elsewhere trying to decide who he would and could pick for key spots. There's the realization that we have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to qualified, smart, dedicated public servants.

Contrast that with the Bush Administration's picking of a horse trainer to head up FEMA. The contrast couldn't be clearer.

It will also be nice to have a president that understands and empathizes with the situation in which many Americans find themselves. Yesterday, Bush shed crocodile tears while discussing the transition effort. He actually said "In January, many Americans will be looking at losing their jobs and wondering where they're going to live. *smirk* I know just how they feel". Asshole.

There has been some grousing in right-wing circles that Obama "bought" this election. The reality is that millions and millions of average Americans bought the job for Obama. One need only look at the way he is inviting us all in to have a look at what he's doing and asking for our suggestions and our help to know that he realizes it too.

The sun is shining in America people... it's a brand new day.

Morning, comrades!

Ah, back to normal today. Listening to the KO podcast and readying for Momma.

I just had to ignore the news and chatter yesterday and listen to music.

Because I could again.

I'm really impressed by what I'm hearing from both sides in the early going, that there has to be renewed bi-partisanship in order to move things forward. (Well, except for the Boehner).

P-E Obama has done more than clear the air and "shine the light of truth on that nest of vipers"...it really feels like a tremendous dead weight has been lifted from America's chest. (Giles Corey, anyone? )

Boehner.. feh!

I hope that sensible-sounding McMuffin guy challenges him for Minority Leader..

BTW I'm really glad this bullshit meme about black voters in CA is being destroyed. The failure of the No on Prop 8 campaign is entirely the fault of the apathy and laurel-resting of the campaign itself.

State of the Minnesota Senate vote...

It's a long diary, so here's the summary:

- At the moment, Coleman leads by 236 votes (.01%)

- Machine tallied votes are still being verified at the county level to correct errors made by fatigued poll workers and machine-rejected ballots (someone didn't mark the form correctly so they get hand-reviewed for voter intent)

- They haven't started counting provisional ballots, but absentee ballots are included in the current counts.

So we may still be a long way from the end of this, but it seems to be a very orderly process and I have a lot more faith in it than the whole punch card crap back in 2000.

Does it? Is there any scientific evidence that supports that premise?

Comment by Random on 11/07/2008 14:31:06
While I agree with Chris's general sentiment, that it's really fucked up to be giving chickens more rights than gays, i do have to disagree with voting against the bill.

A lot of people forget that human's are animals.

Comment by TriSec on 11/07/2008 14:32:55
Hmm....here in Mass, we passed Question 3, which shut down the dog-racing industry.

Chris is opposed to animal rights?

I know he's trying to compare and contrast to prop 8, but that's two different things. Maybe we need to play "grasping for straws" and try for a better comparison.

Besides, did the Muslim community flood the airwaves with ads about how pigs are unclean and don't deserve protection?

scientific? I don't know. It seems logical in my head - I mean take chickens since that seems to be common one thrown out there. From what I understand this poultry farms are rough places to be, crowded coops or pens, feed that has chemicals as additives, and in some cases things are very clean, and so on. wouldn't it be heatlier all around if we didn't do these things?

You know, as much as I hate factory farming, I feel like the GLBT community was told yesterday to once again go and wait in line until it is there turn. I don't blame Chris for being as angry as he is.

How many times were women told to wait there turn for the right to vote while ALSO trying to remove Slavery? We got rid of Slavery Even before Women had the right to vote, and it is interesting beause the Suffragettes were actually mobilizing for aboltiton and well as temprance ---

Comment by Mondobubba on 11/07/2008 14:45:07

But Scoop, that wouldn't natural selection. That is forced selection, you are controling the population by activily seeking the members of a group that need to be culled and removed from the breeding pool. There is no competion to force selective pressure.

Seriously.

There was a thirteen-YO boy who'd been driving me nuts all week. On Monday, I loaned him my mini-DVD player when he was bored - for which he thanked me. Then on Tuesday, when I had parking lot duty, he came out with a full-fledged bullhorn and was pretending to be in charge, announcing fake crap to the drivers and people coming into and out of the lot and generally making a nuisance of himself. There was no one to rein him in - I had no idea where his mother was and he'd been helping / hanging around the field office for longer than me.

So much for thank yous for favors.

Yesterday I went to the field office to help clean the place out. I found a bag of Obama balloons which everyone started digging into immediately. One of the field organizers saw it and, before I could help myself too, took the bag and gave it to the Calvin guy in charge. Later I saw the bag and, when I was about to pick it up (I just wanted two of them), the 13YO grabbed the bag and said "You have to ask Mr. Calvin."

He then proceeded to play "keep away" with me - he's *way* taller than me - and I called him an asshole. I'd pretty much had it with the little jerk.

Someone (probably him) told Calvin who thanked me for all my help and told me to leave.

Good news from the Georgia Senate Race!

On Thursday, Chambliss was 8,000 shy of 50% — this a.m. he’s 16,000 short

With all Fulton County precincts now having reported (at least on the web site of Secretary of State Karen Handel), Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss’ chances of escaping a U.S. Senate runoff seem to have gotten smaller.

On Thursday morning, Chambliss was 8,198 votes shy of the 50-percent-plus-one mark he needs. This morning, the number has nearly doubled to 16,085. [...]
