What are they doing?
Author: Raine    Date: 11/13/2008 13:25:40

I have to be honest. I woke up and realized, I have nothing today.

It's not that I don't have any ideas, I have so many. I want to talk about the bailout, the auto industry, the basic economic mess we still have. I can't, because I really do not understand it. Everyone seems to agree that the bailout has been a colossal failure, heck, even Hank Paulson decided to switch gears yesterday, claiming that the 'facts on the ground' had changed. What?
Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's surprise announcement Wednesday that he'll shift from purchasing troubled assets under the $700 billion Wall Street rescue plan is likely to result in spending taxpayers' dollars to shore up unregulated financial institutions that aren't banks but are vital to consumer lending.

During the negotiations on a bank rescue bill in late September and early October, Paulson argued that he needed broad authority to purchase distressed mortgages and other bad assets in order to clean up bank balance sheets and allow them to resume lending. Despite extensive misgivings, Congress created the Troubled Asset Relief Program. Now Paulson's ripping up that plan.
And with that, the market's promptly tanked again.

What we NEED is not the same chaotic actions that gave us this crisis. What we need is a person, a group of people that at the very least appear to know what they are doing. This does not create a sense of confidence to nations or markets. Like I said I don't understand what this is all about. Everyone seems to have an opinion, but when the Treasury Secretary changes gears like this, I have to wonder if he actually knows what he is doing. In the mean time... *ush thinks we should stay the course. No, really.
President George W. Bush today will urge leaders of the world's biggest industrial and developing economies not to abandon principles of free-market capitalism as they seek a way out of an international financial crisis, calling it the ``best system'' for delivering growth.

In a speech in New York before weekend talks among leaders from the Group of 20 nations, Bush will say policy makers "should fix the problems we have rather than dismantle a system that has improved the lives of hundreds of millions of people around the world,'' according to statement released by the White House.
It really makes me wonder, who the hell is in charge and what in the world are they really doing?

Of course, the one thing I do know about this economic crisis is that they are indeed pulling off the biggest heist the world may ever have known. There is one person who at least is watching the house, as best as he can, and I am happy about that.
New York State's attorney general, Andrew Cuomo, this week issued a subpoena to Bank of America Corp , asking for details on how it allocates its bonuses, the Wall Street Journal said, citing a person familiar with the matter.

In a letter to BofA, Cuomo's office said the company had responded inadequately to its informal request for information on executive compensation, the paper said.

Two weeks ago Cuomo told BofA and eight other banks receiving government money under the Treasury's Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) that using the funds for bonus payments may be illegal under state law.
Andrew Cuomo is an elected official actually trying to hold people accountable for their actions... how about that?

Ok, so maybe I did come up with a little something, but I am still very confused... Personally I would like to see EVERYONE STOP and wait 68 more days until the grownups can take charge, because right now, frankly, while people are calling this a bailout, the ship is still sinking.

And maybe in the end, that is the plan - to drown everything in a bathtub. I hope we still have time.

:peace: and
Raine

Shamless Chambliss:

COLMES: You came under fire of course for that ad against Max Cleland and people have talked about that ever since, the one where there was an image of Osama bin Laden. If you had it to do all over again would you still have run that ad?

CHAMBLISS: You know that ad is a myth, it just hangs around. If people had seen the ads that were run against me by my then opponent they would think that was a light-weight ad, but you know politics is a contact sport. It's a game in where you have to define your opponent and we're going to continue to work hard to address the issues that are important to Georgians. We did then and we're going to do it again.

COLMES: So you would have run it, that, knowing what you know now you would have done the same thing and run the same ad?

CHAMBLISS: Listen that ad was very fair and it pointed out defficiencies in the voting record of my opponent.
Video and more at the link.

Funny, it doesn't LOOK or SOUND like a myth.

Good morning, bloggers!!! Excellent post, Raine!!!

Yes, we are once again seeing the modus operandi of the Bush administration -- when there is a crisis, they stand as resolute as over-cooked spaghetti noodles. If I was a professional investor, Paulson would make me want to buy stock in Tums.

Here is some GOOD NEWS from the Anchorage Daily News: Begich takes lead in latest vote count. The Democratic candidate in the Alaska Senate race is now up by 814 votes.

Also, there is a report that Tammy Duckworth may suceed Obama to the U.S. Senate:

Iraq vet possible Senate replacement for Obama.

By the way, I have the early edition of the Daily Headlines up at UNN.

This is all I can find right now:

A spokeswoman for the US Army in Iraq tells BNO News that a civilian cargo plane has crashed near Fallujah in Iraq.

It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties from the plane crash, which was transporting 4 to 6 crewmembers. "It crashed at 11.35 (Baghdad time), we don't know if it belonged to the United States or another country," the spokeswoman told BNO News' Michael van Poppel in a brief phone conversation.

"It reported having a malfunction before losing radio contact," she added.

It was not clear what the plane, which was en-route to Baghdad International Airport, was transporting. There was also no confirmation on the size of the plane and if there were any casualties on the ground.

That's why I still drive my '94 Saturn. Even used cars cost a lot when I was looking at cars a 2003 model was still around 8000. I guess that's why they push the lease option so much, but I don't want to keep spending for a new car every couple of years with perpetual payments. Two things wrong here:

1) The employee entered a "generic code" and it pulled up "6 or 7 different choices". That means that the choice is in the computer database.

2) The employee - having "6 or 7 different choices" available - chose THAT ONE.

The cashier that chose it obviously needs to be fired, but the company needs to find out how that option got put into the database, fire the person responsible, and remove it from the DB.

The only American-made car that had the same cargo capacity and all-wheel drive was an SUV, and I didn't want to drive one of those.

No domestic manufacturer makes a station wagon anymore.

Who makes the Magnum - I thought that was Chevey

Dodge, but that wasn't out when I was car-shopping (2003). Of course, I didn't want to pay 28,000 for it either.

28K :thud:

cars cost too much.

That's why I still drive my '94 Saturn. Even used cars cost a lot when I was looking at cars a 2003 model was still around 8000. I guess that's why they push the lease option so much, but I don't want to keep spending for a new car every couple of years with perpetual payments. The only thing that's spared me lately is not having a car payment.

that's pretty low mileage for a 5 year old car. what kinda car?

No, the price was 8000 dollars, I think the car had more than 8000 miles on it. If you only had 8000 miles on a five-year old car, you haven't done much driving.

One of my fav restaurants, El Coyote, is on the shitlist. The owner, a Mormon, contributed to the YES on 8 campaign. She held a press conference and admitted to it, which I admire because most people are trying to weasel out of it, like Marriott and JetBlue. It was quite the dramatic scene with crying and the flaven. This restaurant is heavily frequented by the gays, so she'll really be crying soon. There was a protest in front of it last night and the crowd of people normally gathered out front waiting to get in was nonexistent. Taking them down, one establishment at a time.

It was long ago now....I was living in Revere in my pre-marital days (With Mr. Bentz, who Mondo is familiar with at facecrack). Anyway....I had a Jiffy Cake (classic 1950s fare), and I dutifully mixed everything together, counted my mixing strokes, and poured it all into a greased 9 x 9 pan (which I still have.)

Preheat the oven, and in it goes.

Sometime later, I noticed the air thickening in our wee apartment. So...I investigate the cake. The top was literally glowing. "Oh, No! It on fire!!" entered our speech as an idiom that day.

To this day, I have no idea what actually happened. It was an electric stove (which I hate); nearest thing that I can figure is that I did indeed put it on "broil" before setting the cake in.

Fortunately, we opened the screen doors and blew out the smoke before the hardwired alarms went off.

Let me parse this for a moment. The Mormons do not "own" the Marriott International Corporation. It is a publicly traded corporation listed on the NYSE. The founder, J.W. Marriott was a Mormon. I can't find any info on the institutional investors in MIC. The LDS might have a chunk of stock, but I doubt they are majority share holders.

Now, with that said, will I stay at a Marriott? No. J.W. Jr, the current CEO is a big time Mormon like his dad.

Me thinks Ms. Paglia is hot for the lovely Mrs. Palin. Blinded by the p.

On of the over 700 letters to to editor said something about Paglia's panties being wet for Palin. :shudder:

Dust off the sex toys, Ms. Paglia. That's a Nailin' Palin I would pay to see.

Danny Ainge?! They're everywhere. I heard LDS has a nice chunk of Marriott shares. I think we are going to find that their money is more widespread than we could have imagined, just like the scientologists.

Gee Raine ya sound like a Christian righty. They fulminate against LDS in the very same way.

Again, separate the Mariott International LLC from the Morman church. The corporation is based in Montgomery County, MD (right down the street from where I went to high school, no kidding) and as such has to follow some very strict county laws against discrimination (I MoCo). I've not been able to find any donations from a Marriott PAC to prop 8. If that were the case you would be justified in your position.

You know I am justified in my position. And I am not a hater. This was primarily funded by the Mormon church -- and it's memebrs fueled it. So I hold that church responsible.

Take a look at the Protect Marriage Pac.

I will NOT apologize for being against ANY so called religious organization that has a sole purpose to take over this country. They were given Utah, and now they want more. There is a reason why they were cast out of so many states...

Besides it doesn't really matter to me if Marriot was involved with Prop 8, the CEO is a major donor to the LDS. Where does he get his money? Oh -- the Marriot Hotel Chain.

Besides... Go to that prop 8 search site... type in Brent Andrus... he runs a lot of the hotels under the Marriot Chain... The huntington Hotel group... (the site has since been "taken down" for Maintenance)

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa213/FourFreedoms/brentandrus.jpg

The profits that Marriot receives help to find the LDS church.

Sorry hon! still friends?

My thing is you need to separate the institutions from the people and vice versa. I know plenty of Mormons. Nice people. Fucked up ideas. Am I going banish them from my circle of friends, no. The institution of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a lot to answer for; bigotry, sexism, the Meadow Mountain Massacre, magic underpants and that gawd awful, accident causing temple right off the Washington Beltway.

That is why I have been riffing about Marriott LLC being public company that needs to follow the laws of the states and countries where it operates. It can't discriminate against in some places. Because the founder and first CEO of the company was a Mormon, and the current CEO (son of the founder) is a Mormon, doesn't mean they are part of some international Mormon conspiracy.

I've been looking at the Prop 8 funding thing all day. It's been getting a huge number of hits. It is very sloooooooow. I see what you are talking about. Thanks for posting your sources.

In my book calling something a cult is very nasty snarl word. Perhaps I've spent too much time reading the pages of Toronto Centre for Religious Tolerance. It is a great website, but they are a tad too non-judgmental about things like say Satanism. :)

One thing I do know about the Mormons, they put the organized in organized religion. It is another of the semi-to super creepy things about the church needs to answer for.

Oh something else. Bad art. When I took my mom to Hawai'i for her 70th birthday, we needed to stop for a bathroom break. Since we were in Laie the place that came to mind was the LDS temple visitor's center. The place is covered in bad murals of the whitest Jesus ever. There seems to be some platonic ideal of the appearance of Jesus stashed in some safe in Salt Lake City. Every painting, every larger than life mural has the exact same Jesus in it. There was even one right outside the men's room. Truly some of the worst "art" ever. Plus not a single local kine brudda or sista in the whole damn place.

BLITZER: Another question. What are your new ideas on how to take the Republican Party out of this rut that it’s in right now? Give me one or two new ideas that you’re going to propose to these governors who have gathered here in this hotel.

PALIN: Well, a lot of Republican governors have really good ideas for our nation because we’re the ones there on the front lines being held accountable every single day in service to the people whom have hired us in our own states and the planks in our platform are strong and they are good for America. It’s all about free enterprise and respecting the ...

BLITZER: Does that mean you want to come up with a new Sarah Palin initiative that you want to release right now.

PALIN: Gah! Nothing specific right now. Sitting here in these chairs that I’m going to be proposing but in working with these governors who again on the front lines are forced to and it’s our privileged obligation to find solutions to the challenges facing our own states every day being held accountable, not being just one of many just casting votes or voting present every once in a while, we don’t get away with that. We have to balance budgets and we’re dealing with multibillion dollar budgets and tens of thousands of employees in our organizations.

Critical thinking is not the dittoheads strong suit, or being able to think logically. It's amazing how these Republicans who preach personal responsibility will not do so when it comes to their policies. If anything goes wrong even though they were in charge, it's the fault of the opposition who were powerless or rolled over and played dead while their policies were being implemented.

The shameful, false and ugly attacks against the great Gov. Sarah Palin continue, and she is now speaking out, defending herself, and fighting back - but she needs our support!

The Our Country Deserves Better Committee will be producing a pro-Palin TV ad during the next week that features Americans thanking Sarah Palin for her efforts as a public servant, her enthusiastic promotion of conservative principles, and the grace and dignity with which she conducted herself during the campaign -- even as she faced daily attacks from the media, Barack Obama's campaign, and many in the Washington political establishment.
