The Votes are In

We are in a weird place in our country. On the one hand, it's primary season so there's a level of excitement in the air as people get a chance to have their say in the future of our country. On the other hand, the COVID-19 virus is slowly making inroads nearly everywhere in the U.S. Everyone is hunkering down, trying to avoid contact with other people, while at the same time venturing out only to get food and vote. We are now over 1000 confirmed cases in the U.S.

Watching the returns last night on TV, it's amazing to see turnout is up over 2016. Back then, there was a certain malaise, as neither primary candidate was very inspirational after 8 years of President Obama, and none of the Republican contenders seemed very threatening. This year, after 3 years of tRump incompetence and mendacity, the need to push him out of office in November is very real. It's enough to risk catching a potentially deadly virus.

What does seem clear is that Democrats are beginning to coalesce around Biden. In particular, the "black vote" seems to believe that Biden has a better chance of beating tRump than Sanders does. Biden is clearly beating Sanders in states that Sanders won in 2016 (like Michigan), likely for the aforementioned reasons. It's also likely that previous independents and "tRump Democrats" are experiencing buyer's remorse.

Regardless of the reason overall turnout is up, and the youth vote is down, which - as of this writing - has Biden with a 140 delegate lead over Sanders. All of the other "drop out" candidates have endorsed Biden (except Warren, who has not made an endorsement). Biden addressed his staff and reporters last night after most of the results came in, with a tone that sounded like he had won the primary and was heading into the general election. Towards the end of it, he quoted Irish poet Seamus Heaney:
History says, Don't hope
On this side of the grave,
But then, once in a lifetime
The longed-for tidal wave
Of justice can rise up
And hope and history rhyme.

In 2008, Barack Obama won one a message of hope. Perhaps Biden is thinking that after 3 years of lies, bullying, discrimination, economic stupidity, and ruining our reputation in the world, we're all ready for some "hope and change".

Enough so that we're willing to face an invisible microscopic demon in order to make it so.

well sure - I wasn't saying no one found her inspirational... just that - in general - she didn't have the same level of support that Obama did

I was thinking about filing an absentee ballot for the primary, but with my candidate out, I don't feel that strong about choosing between two old white men. I will still vote in the general for the nominee, but it will feel like it's just to get rid of Trump. Hope there will be good down ballot candidates.
