So this is what it's like... Strange feeling.
Author: Raine    Date: 01/29/2009 13:28:28

Is it a new day? Yesterday we learned that after removing the 2 biggest objections to the stimulus package - grass and condoms - the entire Republican side of the aisle in the house voted against it. ALL of them. 244-188. 11 Dems voted against the package as well, and it STILL passed.

Was it everything the Dems wanted? NO... but it was a damn fine start to acting like the majority party. A majority party that can actually get things done without shoving people into basements or cutting off microphones in order to have hearings about the Patriot Act... How refreshing! This time Republicans did succeed at one very important thing: they have shown that the new true leader of the RNC is Rush Limbaugh. In doing so, they are truly showing that they have nothing but obstructive politics in mind.

I feel badly for the people these politicians represent, regardless of party lines. There are many truly good folk in America who are conservative and not neo-cons . They have been sold a bill of goods by these people with an ( R ) next to there name. Until yesterday, I would have told you there are some good people on that side of the aisle, I did not want to lump them all into one vague generalization, because - quite simply - it wasn't fair to do that. But the ENTIRE GOP delegation voted against stimulating the American economy? ALL of them? After John Boehner told them too, after he was given the dictate from a drug-addled radio host? AFTER everyone in America was informed of this information? They ALL voted no?

Now I will say it: they are the ones who are bordering on "hating America". They would have the very people who elected them to office homeless and out of work. They would have them unable to feed their children or give them medication. They are the ones who would have our bridges and roads continue to crumble underneath our feet, and they are the ones who would have our children continue to attend schools that are falling down around them.

All this done in the name of being obstructionist, they have shown themselves to truly be spiteful and bitter. They put Party before country, and blame before responsibility and accountability. Now all the Dems have to do is keep on keeping on. This vote yesterday showed us all that, they CAN try to be bipartisan, they can reach out, but in the end - they don't HAVE to. That should be sending an icy chill down the spine of every house member on the minority side of the aisle.

It feels good to know that we can finally get things done in Washington for the good of America, not just for party. I almost don't believe it, it's been so long. It's very "stimulating"... perhaps that's what that strange feeling is...

:peace: and:heart:

The Repubs are betting that the stimulus doesn't work. If it doesn't then they can use their vote next election against the Dems.

Of course, if the stimulus DOES work, then they are screwed.

That's one hell of a Hail Mary on 4th down, especially considering they're using the American economy for their power-play (sorry for mixing sports metaphors)

The reason this may actually work for them is that even if the stimulus does work, it may take longer than 2010 for the effects to really be noticeable.

At the end of the day, these three things matter:

Is there food on the table?

Do my kids have a warm, safe place to sleep tonight?

Am I going to work tomorrow?

The party that can deliver that will remain in power or win the next election. It's that simple.

Given today's culture though, I doubt the electorate is ready to wait a long time for anything.

Remember that FDR was elected in 1932....by the eve of WWII, 7 years later, we were only on the road to recovery, but not there yet. Fortunately much of what he did made the production victory of WWII possible.

In the 'instant gratification' era, I wonder how patient America will be for a recovery?

Good point Tri.

To think I was naive enough to think that the Republicans in office would agree once they were out from under Bush's Cheney's thumb.

I suspect they believed they would never lose power and decades in the future historians would look back on them with the same reverence that they currently do for Washington, Roosevelt, and Lincoln.

Of course, none of those men ever erected monuments for themselves.

I just sent this message to Steph ( and I mean it - haruuumph :rage:)

Enough with the bi-partisanship! In the current Stimulus Package, Democrats gave up birth control for poor people (a move that would save loads of money, never mind unnecessary abortions - I thought that the GOP loathed abortions - guess not). Dems also included over 40 billion dollars of non-stimulating tax cuts against their better judgment and against all advice from noted economists worth any salt. Why did they do these things? Just to get the Republicans to go along with the Bill and what thanks did they get for making these concessions? Nothing, Nada, Zero, Zilch - not one freaking Republican voted for the Stimulus Bill. So I say why consult and court the GOP? All they are about is obstruction - "No" seems to be their only answer.

Cheers,

mfaye

It still seems unnerving that we talk openly about killing people.

I know they are "bad guys" and our "enemies." But, boy it's strange when leaders say things like "We will find them and kill them."

Raine & Other 4Fers,

I am hoping that a few brave Senators grow a spine and TAKE OUT the freakin' tax cuts and PUT BACK IN the birth control provision for low-income people - and then vote on the Bill, and if it it doesn't pass then they can blame the hell out of the Republicans, rightlfully, for the mess that we are in. I'm just saying :rage:

 Thanks Faye.. I needed that! And a cuppa coffee.. :coffee2:

So I ended up resizing his graphics a third time, making them larger than everyone else's pics but still fairly under control, then handed that mess off to the owner who mentions "Yeah it figures that's the guy who has pictures in his office with Daddy Bush on the golf course up in Kennebunkport." And then it clicks where the stubborness comes from.

It toook 8 years for Bush to completely trash the economy. At least the polls indicate that people will be patient but in an era of short attention spans and short memories, we will have to see if that sticks.
