10 years ago today, 12 students and 1 teacher were massacred at Columbine High School. The event sparked great debate in this country about not only our gun laws, but also about the nature of our American psyche and our youth, including the subcultures of cliques, the effect of video games, the music, even the use of anti-depressants medications by our teenagers. We discussed thru our saddened hearts this tragedy and what could be done to stop this from happening again. We discussed gun violence in this country. We talked and talked.

Michael Moore made a movie about it. We saw increased security in our public school, and we said we would never again forget those that were disenfranchised. We promised our children and ourselves that.

On April 16 2007, 32 People were Killed on campus at Virginia Tech. The deadliest peacetime shooting in our country provoked the debate all over again. Last July, a gunman targeted a Church becuase he was led to believe that it was a Liberal church. Earlier this month 14 people were murdered in a Binghamton, NY by a disgruntled immigrant and 4 Pittsburgh police officers were gunned down by a man who thought that the President was going to take away his guns.

We have learned nothing and instead, have become numb to these tragedies. These are murders. They are acts of violence and totally preventable. Most of these people were and are worthy of debate as the the mental state of the American culture both as a group and as individuals. I don't believe that we should take away guns, nor do I believe in unfettered access to munitions. I have been told that guns don't kill people -- and to a certain extent I believe that. I also believe that sick people with guns are a bad combination.

Sadly, as our nation is in a very bad state economically, we are seeing more and more desperate people. The hopelessness of the situations they find themselves in coupled with extremist talk from wherever they hear or read it may be driving them to more acts of violence. Instability and fear are easy to manipulate. We are seeing that everyday.

We not only react less, we don't even remember the names of the victims anymore. That may be the greatest tragedy of Columbine. We forgot to never let it happen again.

These are the Columbine Victims.

Morning all.. and to think there are people who claim the way to prevent tragedies like this from happening is to allow more people to carry guns more openly.

Well gang, the Marathon is underway...first pitch at Fenway is in about a half hour. (hmm, are there jets circling about?)

And I've traded voice mails with another lead....right here in Waltham (closer than Watertown!) with a company that Maria worked for not too long ago, and I've tried to get into off and on for about 3 years. Maybe this time is the charm?

The article says Pelosi didn't know.. but you know how it'll get spun.

I have plenty of other reasons for not liking Harman, from her continuous approval for the damn war to her approval for Gonzo's domestic spying shenanigans. This just adds more fuel to the fire.

But because it involves anything Israel, it'll get swept under the rug because you know no one wants to upset that murderous bunch the chosen people.

Good morning, bloggers! Excellent blog, Raine!

I am off this morning and have errands to run. (I have subbing in the afternoon.)

Let us hope that we will see steps taken to end the sorts of senseless killing we saw 10 years ago. I think that we have to take a hard look at our mental health care system, as too often people who have serious problems gain access to weapons.

I really think that if we finally get health care passed, things like unstable people with guns will see a decline.

It is, imo, a healthcare problem.

Back from the job fair - what a disappoint; it was a complete bust.

It was marketed as a "high tech" job fair, with aerospace companies participating. There were 4 - count 'em 4 - companies there (General Dynamics, Unisys, Lockhead-Martin, and Northrop-Grumann).

I waited in line about 10 minutes to talk to a guy from G/D. First question: Do you have an *active* security clearance? No? Sorry... but check online - there may more there.

Next, I waited about 20 minutes to talk to the Unisys person. "We don't have anything that matches your skills - just check online and apply there."

After waiting about an hour to talk to the Northrop rep, she said "I've only got jobs in Boulder, CO, and you need an active security clearance". She said that there might be other jobs in other areas, but I would need to apply online.

I didn't bother with Lockheed - I could guess what the response would be.

So after nearly 2 hrs of standing in line, the takeaway is that I should apply online - which is what I would have been doing had I not wasted the time, gas, and energy to go this so-called "job fair".

:grumble:

Hey Raine, great post!

I can't tell you how strange it was, being a high school teacher and walking down the halls today while thinking about Columbine's tenth anniversary. I've seen (and taught) some students that I have had worries about. We have no metal detectors in our school, but there is at least one sheriff's deputy on campus during the school day. It's simultaneously sad and comforting.

Remember the past; teach the future.
