Last Day Out
Author: TriSec    Date: 05/08/2009 11:10:31

Good Morning.

Today is my last day out of a job.

Back on February 17, my previous company decided they were better off without me and 'put me out to pasture', so to speak. It's been a long stretch, not made any easier by the current economic situation, but I never gave up.

I suppose I'm luckier than most; the industry I'm in is one of the very few growth industries in the United States (Health Insurance Claims/ Back Office) and I'm in an even narrower area of that business. (Electronic claims transactions.) Everyone has heard of "HIPAA", but I bet that there's not 2 among us that know about the other side of HIPAA....which pretty much created the EDI industry.

There's a finite number of people out there that really and truly know the ins and outs of the ANSI X-12 codesets for claims transmissions, and I do count myself among them. We'll always be able to find work; it's just a matter of finding the right place.

That said, I know many out here are 'in between jobs' or in less than ideal situations in their current jobs. You hardly need my advice, as some of you have been at this far longer than I have. All I can say is, never give up. Something is out there, and even though it may take weeks or months to find it, you can't get discouraged. During my downtime, I read somewhere that for every open position that's posted out there, companies receive an average of 200 applications. For EVERY position.

That's a lot of noise; these days if you even get a call for a phone screen, that's a major accomplishment. But you can't quit.

As for me, I took advantage of the downtime and did quite a few things around the house that needed doing. I got rid of some old furniture and re-arranged the living room and dining room. Even though I live in an apartment complex, the landlord isn't the brightest star, so I did a lot of yard work and minimal landscaping around my end of the building. (Which had the desired effect; the professional guys have been here recently.) We had a flood in the cellar back around April 1, which forced me to clean up down there and throw out a lot of junk. I've even dusted off my old workbench, re-connected an old stereo, and got back to building scale models again.

And I've done one other thing. Some months ago, I decided that I should probably try to crack into city government here in Waltham. On this past Tuesday, I walked down to city hall and pulled a nomination packet to run for School Committee. I've already had an interview; a reporter from the News Tribune called me from out of the blue yesterday, and we talked for about 20 minutes. (Probably more of a "candidates for office" piece than anything else.)

So.....It's quite a weekend of renewal. We're heading to the end of another succesful Scouting season (2 meeting left!)...Spring Soccer is well underway, and Javi has a game tomorrow...Sunday is First Communion, and we'll have family in friends in town to celebrate the Eucharist with Javier...and Monday, it's off to a brand-new job with all the hopes and dreams that entails.

There's a couple of things that kept me a little bit saner than I would have been during the last two months. The first is LL Bean store #132, right here in Burlington, MA. From the very first day I was out of work, they've gone out of their way to treat me with kindness and sympathy; I've been given new opportunities at the store and as many crumbs of hours as they can spare. (Remember, I am a holdover 'seasonal' employee from Christmas.) I have been impressed with the store team beyond all measure, to the point where I've recently penned a letter to the CEO Chris McCormick to thank the store management for everything they've done.

The second is right here on this server.

Yes, it's everyone on this blog. I don't know how we managed to take a handful of dispersed persons and build us a real online community, but we've done it, This could have turned out to be just me, Bob, and Raine in our little corner of the internets complaining about President Bush...But I think we've all been through enough and shared enough together that this blog is oh-so-much-more.

Like I said a ways back on that "25 things" that was cirlcling Facebook...."I'm glad that some people I know on the internet have turned into real friends."

:peace:

 We're glad we could be there for ya Tri! And glad to see you landing someplace where you can say to Athena!

...and also to L.L. Bean. It's rare that you see that kind of caring & commitment regarding the associates in the cutthroat retail sales industry. *glares at Christmas Tree Shops and OfficeMax >P*

I guess there's one more thing to wish for here.. that you have bloggie access at your new office!

Anyone heard from Raine & Bob to see if they made it home safe?

Thanks for the blog- I am so happy you found work in your field- you are a great example of not giving up!

Just stopping by to say hello!

Sounds like the rumble of thunder again so I will have to get right off.

Good morning everyone.

Tri, just glad you weren't out of work as long as I was a few years back. The trend of industry consolidation has made TV work especially good paying TV work harder to find. And I probably do need to know more people. But I have to get my debt issues resolved or I may end up sleeping out of my car.

The blog is awfully quiet this morning.

Sorry about that.. was writing a nice long prognostication on sifting political leanings in America, the eventual demise of the GOP and birth of a potential new, center-left pragmatist party to replace it.

Here's a link to the thread - my post is on page 2.

Morning all from the conservative hq - aka my parents hometown. So glad to know you've found a job TriSec, though I never for a moment doubted you would eventually find something.

Um.

Wow.

Um.

Wow.

Does he realize that pedophiles' victims are more likely to be .... girls? (3 out of 4 victims). And that the pedophile is more likely to be... male. (95%). So, um.....this actually proves a case against Heterosexual marriage!!

I still haven't jumped on the twitter bandwagon. Facebook keeps me busy enough.

your not missing much on twitter - haven't updated in a little bit

Comment by livingonli on 05/08/2009 15:47:24
I used to look at Tri's page but since he has got a new job, it seems more of the stuff was updated on his facebook page.

all twitter is is micro blogging

Considering I may need to get a second job to help with the bills for now. I might be better off with fewer distractions.

I kept a handful of athena things. I've got a water bottle that fits my bike perfectly, and a couple of coffee mugs. (I collect those, I have some from jobs I had over a decade ago.)

But I ditched all my T-shirts, mostly from corporate retreats and other "morale building" things. I kept my fleece; I earned those by helping out the Sales Team on their tours with prospective clients.

I've just put those through the wash.....rinsing out all the bad karma and hoping for a fresh start.

Bob called me last night (to post this morning.) They left late and drove part of the Blue Ridge Parkway yesterday. They were only in Roanoke, VA at 7 pm last night. Don't know if they stopped overnight somewhere or kept on.

Tri

What a wonderful and inspiring blog! We are finally home .

A wonderful -- and yet overfilled trip.

you know, on a few prog boards a lot of people have been slamming the president saying that he lied about DADT, this proves again that he really means what he says.

Mala, btw -- we had the pleasure of eating lunch at the Philly Tavern in Old Towne Mannassas -- What a lovely village -- and the lunch was to DIE FOR! Best NE clam chowder I have had south of NY/NE.

That is a wonderful write up Tri!

Tell me if you need a bumper sticker design... I can whip one out for you in no time. Pro bono.

Hey! :D

Sorry I missed you guys. Haven't been to Philly Tavern myself but my neighbor says there for a mean pork roast dinner.

Comment by wickedpam on 05/08/2009 20:46:30
btw - I only live on the other side of town so Philly Tavern is only like 15mins from the house. I love old town Manassas, they're trying to do a whole re-inventing thing with it to bring in tourists.

It's the part of the county that likes to pretend its Manassas that's kinda rough and redneck.

Like I said before about the t shirts, great for car buffing after a wax job, cleaning up puke, all those dirty jobs you don't want to waste a Sham-Wow on.

Ugh. I well know that part of "Manassas" it's truly awful. It's a real shame that faux Manassas has ruined the rep of the actual City of Manassas.

BTW: Mondo sez "Star Trek" is a non-stop action thrill ride from start to finish. It was everything the Onion said it would be.

I heard about that and am loving it. Although they still have Glenn live in the morning. The only thing is she's now up against Thom on America Left-167 since they run his show on delay and carry Ed Schultz live.
