The Undecideds - what are they waiting for?
Author: BobR    Date: 10/31/2008 12:37:31

I read an article this morning that said 1 in 7 voters are still "persuadable" in this election. That means that 14% of likely voters are still not sure who they're going to vote for on Tuesday. What makes them undecided?

Asked where they disagree with Obama, changeable voters most frequently mention taxes and the economy, health care, abortion and social issues such as gun control, and personal traits including his race and his honesty. For McCain, it's the economy and taxes, health care, foreign policy and abortion.

In the interest of preserving the public good, let's see if we can persuade these folks to do the right thing....

Taxes:
Unless the person's family earns more than $200k/yr, they will get a better tax deal under Obama. This has been confirmed by independent economists (Washington Post graphic and Parade Magazine article).

Economy:
The Economist magazine endorsed Barack Obama. Considering that the magazine is about - you know, the economy - that should count for something on this particular subject. There's also this interesting read about why raising taxes on the rich is good for the economy. Finally, Obama is more likely to end the war sooner, and the money currently spent could be better used here at home.

Health care:
As a recent article confirms, over 50% of doctors actually support a Universal Healthcare Plan (you know - that dirty word that conservative pundits equate to socialism and poor healthcare?). The AMA hasn't recommended either one, but according to several experts, Obama's healthcare plan would be better for the economy. Here's a comparison of Obama's and McCain's healthcare plans. The AMA does give an unbiased description of Obama's plan.

Abortion:
Obama has gotten recommendations from NOW and NARAL. However, if you are against legal and safe abortion, then McCain might be your better choice (Palin definitely - she wants to outlaw ALL abortion). Let's not forget McCain's snarkiness about a "woman's health". Any dissafected Hillary voters should look at their uterus (or their loved one's) and say goodbye to any control over it if they vote McCain.

Gun Control:
Barack Obama describes his positions on numerous topics on his website. Gun control isn't one of them, which says that he won't be focusing on that at all, so you can relax your grip on that rifle. FWIW - Gun ownership rights aren't discussed on McCain's page either, so protecting those rights aren't really in his sights either.

Race:
If this is a problem, then YOU have a problem. Hell, he's half white. Vote for the white half.

Honesty:
This should only be a problem for voters leaning towards McCain. His constantly changing views on nearly everything have to make one wonder if he believes half of what he says. Here is a great master list of his changing positions, but there are numerous other sites as well.

I am still amazed that this late in a campaign that has shown such stark differences between candidates that there are still undecideds. If you didn't see it, I recommend watching the Obama infomercial. It really shows why he wants to be president, and why he is what our country needs right now.

This my last blog before the election, and I'm asking all of you to vote for Barack Obama.

Not for me - for OUR country.
