With only 14 days to go until the general election, candidates in all races are beginning to feel the heat of the looming "deadline". With the exception of the first presidential debate, the remaining 3 were all knockout wins for the Democrats. There's also the conflicting messages and gaffes from Republican candidates, which is unusual considering that they were a fairly unified party in previous elections.

The last two presidential debates showed a candidate Romney repeatedly in conflict with earlier positions and even statements on his website. They warned us that they would be shaking the etch-a-sketch, but it's still surprising and jarring that they don't seem to realize that they can't really erase past statements that he and his campaign have made.

Good Morning.

Today is our 4,034th day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from on ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 2,141
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,065

We find this morning's cost of war passing through:

$ 1, 385, 595, 575, 000 .00

We'll stay on the home front today. With last night's debate about foreign policy, it would have been nice to hear from either candidate about some veteran's issues, but none were broached by either or the moderator. So once again, our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines are swept under the rug except when it's politically convenient for them to appear.

Darrell Issa needs to be removed from his position on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee -- immediately. Earlier this month, we learned that in his zeal to go after President Obama for the tragedy in Libya, he blew the CIA's cover

Happy Monday! Tonite is the third and final debate. We are 15 days away from Election day. While the media is telling us it is a tight race and there is much handwringing going on, could this be the most ironic story of the election campaign?

Good morning.

It's at last funerary weekend. Not much happening today; the main event is tomorrow afternoon and Monday morning. I'll be doing a lot of ironing today, but that's about all.

There is a certain inherent phoniness in political campaigns. Incumbents try to sell the highpoints of their records and hide the mistakes. Newcomers try to show they are ready to compete on the Big Stage. The rich and the powerful try to show they are just "regular folk" by staging "photo ops" in factories, diners, schools, and public parks.

Post-Debate Part Deux
Author: BobR    Date: 10/17/2012 12:41:57

Anyone who harbored doubts about President Obama's ability (and/or willingness) to take on Mitt Romney at the 2nd debate had those doubts washed away in the first 15 minutes. The president relentlessly pointed out the lies in Romney's statements and lack of specifics in his platforms. Romney's frustration was palpable, and desperation pushed him to be rude and overtly aggressive to the moderator and the President.

In fact, it wasn't so much about the good points that President Obama made - there were no real surprises there. The debate seemed to be more about how badly Mitt Romney did. President Obama came prepared to compare his record and plans against Romney's and Romney didn't like it. As the evening wore on, Romney became more desperate and frustrated, and it showed. He interrupted and disrespected both the moderator (Candy Crowley) and Obama. The end result was a contrast between a cool and collected president and a jackass.
