Good Morning.

We'll skip the statistics this morning. Instead, on this Christmas Week, I leave you with the incredible story of two aging WWII vets.

NATICK {MA} - It was a 68-year-old photo on a nursing home bulletin board salute to Veterans Day that caught John Kelley’s eye as he maneuvered his wheelchair through the reception area of his nursing home.

In the upper right-hand corner of the poster was a black-and-white portrait taken in 1941 of Army Captain Robert Fulton.

Kelley, himself a World War II vet, took a closer look.

Then, nearly shaking in disbelief, the 87-year-old called over a staffer to share his incredible news: The man in the photo had been his commanding officer for more than a year in the South Pacific.

“I thought, ‘He’s alive!’ I really thought I was the only one left,’’ recalled Kelley, who was a Cambridge boy from a family of a dozen children sent to fight in New Caledonia, a key Allied base in the battle against the Japanese in the wake of their attack on Pearl Harbor.

“They said, ‘Yes. He’s upstairs.’’’

If it means moving forward, I'll compromise.

After much wrangling, it was done. in the wee hours of the morning, on a snowy Sunday Monday, we defeated the GOP filibuster. HCR is not dead. It will now go to a joint committee between the House and the Senate, where the bill will be merged and a final vote taken.

Good Morning.

Those of you that followed this space regularly know that for a number of years, we ran a Saturday blog highlighting third-party politics and issues in these United States.

During the 2008 primary season, I went down to my City Hall one April day and changed my registration from "U" (unenrolled) to "D"...specifically to vote for Mr. Obama in the general election.

With much relief and joy, I stood on the mall with 2 million of my closest friends, and watched and made sure George and Laura left Washington safely.

Well....here we are almost a year later. The next opportunity I have, I'm going back to city hall to change my registration back to "U". I let my membership in the Libertarian Party lapse over the past year...and I don't know if I'm going back or not. (The Bob Barr fiasco was just too painful; the Libertarians are now just as fractious and infighting as the Republicans...and Democrats...seem to be.)

Kill (the) Bill, Pt 2 (aka: I Want My Pony)
Author: BobR    Date: 12/18/2009 13:42:28

In Wednesday's blog, I pointed out the absurdity of "kill the bill and start over" mantra, because - realistically - there will be no starting over, and even if there was - what makes anyone think it would turn out differently? The Republicans want to kill the bill because they're against everything the Dems do, and those on the left want to kill it because it doesn't have [insert pet priority here]. I have to wonder if creative thinking and long-range thinking have been replaced with stubbornness and instant gratification?...

Start Over?... Really?...
Author: BobR    Date: 12/16/2009 12:02:23

As every day passes, it becomes ever more clear that no one is happy with the health care reform bill in the Senate. Republicans are trying to gut it until it becomes a weak excuse for reform. Liberals are becoming ever more frustrated and have called for it to be scrapped. Is that really the best approach?

We'll start this morning as we always do, with the latest casualty figures from Iraq and Afghanistan, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

Here at "Ask a Vet", we've spent the last 5 years focusing almost exclusively on Iraq, with the ocassional story about Afghanistan almost as an afterthought. Iraq isn't going away anytime soon, but as the war in Afghanistan continues to 'surge', you'll be seeing more stories in this space.

DC doesn't need a Health Care clinic -they're just fine, thank you.
Author: Raine    Date: 12/14/2009 13:38:37

Last week, we learned of yet another free health care clinic where thousands of people showed up. These were people who lacked adequate healthcare coverage -- most of whom were employed. It was widely covered on 'Countdown' as many viewers of the show have been asked to help donate to these clinics.

It has been tragic to see the coverage of these clinics. From Texas, South Carolina, Arkansas and Los Angelas -- it illustrates the dire need we have in this nation for people to have access to decent health care. It has also been inspirational to see health care providers and volunteers giving time and energy to people.

Big News of the Day
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 12/13/2009 16:20:33

Delegates to the United Nations climate conference in Copenhagen held informal talks yesterday during a one-day break from negotiations aimed at crafting a new global climate change treaty.

Amid a sea of protesters, this conference could be the cornerstone of President Obama's commitment to once again being a member of "the believers". That is, that the United States will acknowledge Global Climate change and be a part of the solution to solving our planets dire problem.

However, As the 12-day conference entered its second week, analysts reported little progress in replacing the current treaty, the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.
