Say What? The GOP's against Tax breaks?
Author: Raine    Date: 09/08/2010 12:46:24

Back to life, back to reality. Really? This is reality? A reality where TAX BREAKS are met with skepticism by the GOP?
Obama's plans for billions of dollars in tax breaks for businesses are policies Republicans typically embrace, but the party has little motivation to give the Democratic White House a win with polls giving them strong hope of gaining seats in Congress -- possibly winning both houses.

Obama will announce his plans to stimulate the sagging U.S. economy in a speech on Wednesday in Cleveland.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday there was little appetite for new economic proposals from Obama, arguing that the $814 billion stimulus the president already pushed through Congress in early 2009 has not had the desired effect.

"After the administration pledged that a trillion dollars in borrowed stimulus money would create 4 million jobs and keep the unemployment rate under 8 percent, their latest plan for another stimulus should be met with justifiable skepticism," he said.

Good Morning.

Today is our 2,729th day in Iraq and our 3,245th day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do, with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing wars, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

Since war began (3/19/03): 4417
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03): 4278
Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3956
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3558
Since Obama Inauguration (1/20/09): 189

Other Coalition Troops - Iraq: 318
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,275
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 791

Well, troops have pulled back to Kuwait; speeches have been made, flags have been waved, and still more soldiers and contractors are heading to Iraq in a "non-combat" role. The question remains...was it worth it?

Hello Labor Day
Author: BobR    Date: 09/06/2010 12:32:14

We forgot to get someone to cover the Labor Day blog whilst we were out of town. So here's a couple things to mull over on the day we celebrate Labor and the working class, and take a day off for ourselves.

White Riot

White Riot is the name of a Clash song. Velveeta likes the Clash. But she doesn't like the new racism (same as the "old" racism) that permeates the UK right now.

They are not shy about their hatred; not in the closet (so to speak) as the haters in this country.

Take a gander, it's not pleasant to watch:

The EDL:

Good Morning!

So, here we go into the Labor Day holiday weekend. For those of us on the East Coast, we've spent much of the last 48 hours enduring increasing histrionics from the mass media about ol' Hurricane Earl.

He did brush by the Carolinas, with some minor beach erosion and local flooding, and seemed to be preparing to do the same to Nantucket and the Outer Cape. But a curious thing happens when a hurricane hits the cold North Atlantic. It falls apart.

Earl was certainly worth watching; as a Category 4 storm at its peak, there could have been significant damage. I don't doubt that being prepared was the wrong course of action; after all, Lord Baden-Powell thought that was good enough for his boys, and I've managed to live a decent life by those words, but I digress.

Crazy is as Crazy Does
Author: BobR    Date: 09/03/2010 12:01:08

Whenever crazy things start happening, my wife tells me "Mercury is in retrograde". I have no idea what that means or why things would be going nuts because of a planet's orbit. In my personal life, I had a dead battery and a blown tire and Hurricane Earl all hitting while we're trying to get ready for a long weekend trip. On a larger scale, it's no less crazy elsewhere...

Addressing the Problems
Author: BobR    Date: 09/01/2010 11:36:50

Last night, President Obama gave his second presidential address from the Oval Office, mostly on the topic of the wars in the Middle East. There wasn't much earth-shattering there, mostly platitudes for the soldiers thrown into this war of choice, with some other topics thrown in as well. If you missed it, you can read the transcript here and/or watch the video:

Even as more of our troops come home from Iraq, they face an uncertain future. While many of them will finally end up at home, many more of them will eventually re-deploy to Afghanistan. With our limited core of volunteer soldiers, there will be many that will be heading overseas for the 3rd, 4th, or 5th time...or more.

In WWII, soldiers often spent years away from their families. My own great-uncle had but one weekend at home from when he enlisted in early 1942 up until Japan surrendered 3 years later. But their war was different....there was a clear goal, as articulated by FDR...the "unconditional surrender" of Germany and Japan.

Our wars have been going on for the better part of a decade...with no clear goal given by anyone, and a seemingly endless engagement ahead.

Small Iron-y.
Author: Raine    Date: 08/30/2010 13:05:05

On Sunday, NYC presented the Arlington County Fire Department with a section of steel from the World Trade Center to honor the department's service during the September 11 attacks. There was a parade, and a presentation.
The Fire Family Transport Foundation, which provides medical transportation to injured New York firefighters and their families, delivered its first piece of steel in 2003 to the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, said Eugene Stolowski, who works with the foundation and is a firefighter in the Bronx, N.Y.

Foundation officials decided in 2007 to start the motorcycle runs as fundraisers. The Iron and Steel team has delivered World Trade Center steel to the National Infantry Mueseum at Fort Benning, Ga., and to the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Co., which responded to the crash of United Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.

More than $20,000 was raised by the bikers and other donations for the Shanksville run, which allowed the foundation to purchase a new car to transport families. The Fort Benning run raised about $15,000, Stolowski said, and a portion of the proceeds benefits the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps injured military personnel. [/quote
