Sept 2009: An American Lynching
Author: Raine    Date: 09/24/2009 13:05:18

Back in June, I wrote a blog about how the right wing was upping the ante. It pissed a good many people off. It was after we saw the assassination of a security guard in Washington DC. It was after the assassination of Dr. Tiller. It was 2 months after the DHS report came out that people went ballistic over. I almost could have reposted it word for word regarding the events that have unfolded over the past 24 hours. Here is part of what was written:

Welcome To Atlantis
Author: BobR    Date: 09/23/2009 12:37:16

Anyone who's seen the news lately has likely heard the story and seen some of the footage - Atlanta is flooded. It seems impossible. Atlanta is not in really in an area anyone would consider a flood plain. There is only one major river that flows through the city, and it's not even big enough to be navigable for shipping. There weren't any hurricanes coming ashore. So what happened?... and what is the state leadership doing?

Governor Giuliani? It could be.
Author: Raine    Date: 09/21/2009 13:46:27

Over the weekend it ws reported in the NYT that President Obama requested NYS Governor David Patterson to not run for election in 2010. Heads exploded around the internets. I know I no longer reside in NYS, so I understand it might be puzzling as to why I am writing about this today. I still love my home state, but this has far bigger implications for the Democratic party on a national scale.

The Republocrites
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 09/20/2009 13:49:33

Recently the Republicans held some sort of soirée called the “Values Voters Conference” at the Hilton Hotel in Washington DC which is most remembered for being the site that John Hinckley attempted to get Jodie Foster to notice him. In attendance were the haut monde of the Republican Party. Those that hold their values high and their "holier than thou" sword above the bed of their wives and mistresses; their moral compass never wavers from the direction of the righteousness.

Or does it?

There are some Republicans who I like to call: Republocrites.

Republocrites are those in the GOP who admonish us “little people” that we must always take the moral high ground, while they have been known to wander off the path and into a bank or a whorehouse or, if God were to bless them, a multinational financial center with a whorehouse and a casino attached!

Here are just a few cases in point of those that attended the Conference begging for those Christian votes.

The good, the bad & the stupid: The Baucus Amendments.
Author: Raine    Date: 09/19/2009 22:15:30

All 543 Amendments to the infamous 'Max Baucus' health care reform bill were put online earlier today. If you are so inclined, you can read it all here. If not, the wonderful folks from Think Progress' Wonk Room tweeted them earlier today. I decided to organize them a bit. I present to you the best, the bad, the stupid & the strange of the Baucus Amendments, thus far.

A good cup of tea
Author: TriSec    Date: 09/19/2009 13:36:46

Good Morning!

You're probably having a cup of coffee with breakfast right about now. A few hundred years back, the hot beverage of choice used to be tea.

I bet you know the story; Bostonians were unhappy about the tea tax, so they dumped a couple of shipments in the harbor, and now we all drink coffee. Later, some ill-informed folks seized that as a symbol of government oppression and started waving their teabags at politicians.

Curiously, we're not number one for per capita coffee consumption. Finland is, at nearly 12kgs per person per annum. Curiously, our neighbor to the north that remained British drinks more coffe than us too, at 6.5kgs. The USA ranks only number 26, at 4.2 kgs.

So what's the big deal?

You've got to go back a bit to the Townshend Acts, passed in 1767 by Parliament.

News You May Have Missed
Author: BobR    Date: 09/18/2009 12:47:50

The current news cycle has gone something like this: health care bill, racism, health care bill, racism, health care bill, sports, weather, racism, health care bill, racism, health care bill, racism.... It's a big world out there; surely there are other newsworthy things going on. So - as an occasional ongoing service to our readers, here are some of the news items you may have missed.

I must be racist -- you are too.
Author: Raine    Date: 09/17/2009 12:36:36

Let me get this straight -- It has been all well and good for Rush Limbaugh to play on the radio a fun little ditty called 'Barack the Magic Negro' and it is wrong and race baiting for President Jimmy Carter to call people out for it? It is fine for Glenn Beck to call President Obama a racist, and Jimmy Carter should be rebuked? The right wing has gone so far as to intimate that electing Barack Obama has inspired black people to be thuggish. Really. Larisa Alexandrova puts it together fantastically.

So what we've learned is that it's OK to be racist. It's OK to accuse Obama as being a racist. It's NOT OK to call anyone out on the real racism we're seeing. THAT is playing the race card. What the hell is wrong with this picture?

Government Of the Corporations, By the Corporations...
Author: BobR    Date: 09/16/2009 12:25:26

Anyone who has seen video of the 9/12 protesters knows that they seem to be using the terms socialism, fascism, and communism interchangeably. They push the notion that America is becoming socialist (an economic term) as well as communist (a political term). Facism means different things to different people. Some people think of it in the classical Italian sense where "a system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism." Other definitions include "corporatism", where corporations take over government. It is in that latter sense that it completely contradicts communism (where government takes over and owns businesses).
